The Elvaton U15 girls soccer team went 7-2-1 and won the county championship for the third time in four years.
For the third time in four years, the Elvaton girls soccer players are county champions. Elvaton’s U15 girls soccer team overcame a 2-2 start to go unbeaten in its next six games, avenging both losses and finishing the year atop the league with a 7-2-1 record.
Elvaton’s defense was anchored by the tremendous goalie trio of Rylan McDonald, Molly Goeller and Ryan Kohler, who rotated between goaltending and defense/halfback. Fullback stalwarts Charlotte Astle, Coleen Berardino and Sophia Bordone complemented stopper duo Karli Kirchenheiter and Lola Blumenberg, drawing praise from defensive coach Matt Astle.
“Whether it was at practice or in the games, these girls always played as a cohesive unit and had each other’s backs,” said Astle.
The Elvaton offense was powered by the strong and aggressive halfbacks corps of Samantha Koppe, Stella Bordone, Maddison Holden, Emma Boyle and Isabel Baselga, who “did an incredible job scoring passing and getting the ball to the fantastic finishers,” said coach Matt DeFeo. At striker, Sloane Andrulis, Meghan DeFeo, Maura Lally and Olivia Tramontana were able to capitalize on the team’s play with goals throughout the year. Offensive coach Victor Baselga said the offense was motivated to improve after its slow start.
“We struggled early with our passing and finishing, and the girls worked during practice to improve these skills with a lot of hard work and repetitive drills,” he said. Despite the fact that 13 of the team’s 16 players are qualified to play in the U13 division, the team played up in age bracket in order to keep its players of various ages all together. Said coach DeFeo,
“For a team to start out at 2-2 and fight back and beat the two teams that gave us our early losses and finish at 7-2-1, the county championship was icing on the cake.”
- Elvaton is a volunteer organization, and we can always use more! Over the next year, we're going to need to fill several roles. We meet at the Elvaton Park Building on the second Tuesday of each month, and even if you're not interested in taking a board position, parents/guardians are always welcome!
- Elvaton is looking for coaches and players who want to help build a competitive softball program at the recreational level. For more information, contact Lee Haydon at 410-404-7192.
