10U TRAVEL SEASON A SUCCESS

The 10u travel team went into the season knowing that they were using the season to develop players at positions, all around the field and pitcher, that they do not normally play.  Knowing that all teams made the playoffs, wins and losses were secondary.  After finishing the season at 3-9 and a #6 seed in the playoffs, they decided to turn it up a notch.

Their final regular season game was agains playoff-bound Hawthorne and the Golden Bears won that game 4-3.  Michael Rizzo pitched four innings of 1-hit, no run ball, before giving way to Xavier Mieles for the final two innings.  Rizzo also starred at the plate going 2-2 with two doubles and 3 RBI.  Rizzo was later driven in by a Billy Mareski Sac Fly.  This would give the Golden Bears momentum heading into the playoffs.

10U Travel Playoffs

The 10u Golden Bears notched wins against #3 seed Ridgewood, by a score of 10-9 in 7 innings, and #2 seed Glen Rock, by a score of 20-13, in the first two rounds of the playoffs thrusting them into the NJSBL Championship game on Sunday, July 24, in Riverdale.

In the game against Ridgewood (a team that defeated the Golden Bears twice this year), the team needed to come back from an 8-2 deficit in the last inning in order to take the game to extra innings.  The six runs in the last inning marked the second time in two weeks the team came back from as many runs in the last inning. The sixth inning started with an infield single by Nate Eckert, followed by Rizzo & Czarniewy walks.  Then Billy Mareski roped a 2-run single, Xavier Mieles hit an RBI single and Nick Adamo hit an RBI double down the right field line, and then Matteo Morelli capped off the scoring with a 2-run double to complete the 6-run comeback.

In the 7th inning, Rizzo started the rally with a single to left field and Anthony Pizzuti reached via error.  Those two batters were followed by a Bobby Czarniewy RBI and a Nick Adamo RBI walk.

The bears received four innings of solid pitching to start the game by Pizzuti and Rizzo pitched the final three innings to pick up the win.

10u Travel Semi-Finals

Versus Glen Rock, the Golden Bears bats were alive and working from the start of the game...after a few walks, the team got RBI singles from Xavier Mieles, Matteo Morelli, Jalen Maharaja (fielder's choice) and Nate Eckert and the inning was capped off by a 3-run triple by Anthony Pizzuti (which would have made the score 10-0 but there is an 8 run limit per inning).  Unfortunately the Bears lead soon evaporated and the score was 12-10 after three innings.  After Billy Mareski's solo home run in the second inning, to get to 12 runs, the Golden Bears received RBI singles from Maharaja, Mieles in the fourth inning and an RBI single from Pizzuti in the fifth inning.  And after two Glen Rock runs in the fifth, the game was knotted at 13-13.

Then the bats woke up again...After three consecutive singles by Matteo Morelli, Jalen Maharaja and Cam Werner, Nate Eckert added an RBI single to give Lyndhurst the 14-13 lead, and then Michael RIzzo ripped a 3-run triple to right-center to seal the win, but Billy Mareski then launched his second home run of the game to finish the scoring.  The Bears won 20-13.

Some Stats from the game -

Eckert (2 hits, 2 runs, 1 Rbi) Rizzo (2 hits, 2 runs, 3RBI), Pizzuti (2 hits, 4 RBI), Czarniewy (2 hits, 3 runs, RBI), Mareski (3-3, 4 runs, 4 RBI, 2 HR's) Mieles (3 hits, 2 RBI), Morelli (2 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Maharaja (2 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBI) Werner (3 hits, 2 runs), Anthony (1 run)

10u Travel Championship Game

Lyndhurst faced a tough pitcher to start the game and couldn't get anything going until the fourth inning when Michael Anthony walked and Nate Eckert singled, followed by a Michael Rizzo walk to load the bases.  After an RBI fielder's choice by Anthony Pizzuti, Bobby Czarniewy and Billy Mareski had RBI singles. In the sixth inning trying to mount a comeback, Michael Anthony again walked and was then doubled over to third base by Michael Rizzo.  Pizzuti then singled in M. Anthony, and that would do it for the Golden Bears as they fell short to the NJ Glory Club baseball team 11-4 in the finals.

It was an overall great year by out 10 year olds.  Congrats on everything you accomplished this year

Lyndhurst 10 yr All-Stars Fall Short Agains Rutherford 8-6

The 10u All-Star team started out the pool-play portion of their All-Star season against the defending district champs, Rutherford.  Rutherford jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings were in the books.  After a scoreless third inning, Lyndhurst began to chip away at that lead.
Billy Mareski (3-4 w/ 2 runs & 1 RBI) singled to start the fourth.  Matteo Morelli and Frankie Davis followed with walks to load the bases, when hot-hitting Nate Eckert laced a two-run single down the right field line to cut the lead to 5-2.  Rutherford tacked on two more runs in the fourth to get the lead back to 5.  In the fifth, Mareski singled again to load the bases, following walks by Anthony Pizzuti and Bobby Czarniewy.  Matteo Morelli then smacked a two-run single to left field.  In the sixth, Anthony Pizzuti drove in Cam Werner and Eckert to cut the lead to 8-6.  But Lyndhurst would strand the tying run at second base when the game ended.

Lyndhurst 10 yr All-Stars Pound East Rutherford 23-4

The 10u All-Star team began their second pool-play game on Monday night and finished it off on Tuesday, after the game was suspended due to heavy rain in the bottom of the second inning with Lyndhurst ahead 5-3.  Lyndhurst scored its five runs before the rain came via back-to-back doubles from Nate Eckert and Anthony Pizzuti in the first, then received a two-run double by Eckert and RBI singles from Pizzuti and Bobby Czarniewy in the second.  Jake Mayer battled through the rains on Monday to pitch two solid innings.  When play resumed on Tuesday Czarniewy picked up where Mayer left off and got a quick three outs in the 2nd.

Thats when Lyndhurst began to bring its own thunder to the game.  After an infield single by Frankie Davis and walks by Cam Werner and Eckert, the table was set for Anthony Pizzuti to hit his first LL Home Run, a grand slam, giving Lyndhurst a 9-4 lead.  The runs just kept coming...Czarniewy singled, Billy Mareski doubled, walks to Matteo Morelli, Jake Mayer and Michael Anthony brought bases loaded for Nick Adamo and Eckert to rip RBI singles to left field.  Michael Rizzo was up next and worked a full count, and not to be outdone by his cousin, he decided to deposit his first LL Home Run, a 3-run shot,  down the Right Field line.   Following Pizzuti's single and an RBI double by Czarniewy, Billy Mareski decided  to join the dinger party and hit his first LL Home Run, a 2-run shot to right-center.  Lyndhurst now had a 20-4 lead. Lyndhurst capped off its scoring in the fourth when Anthony Pizzuti (5-5 with 8 RBI)  completed his cycle, with a 2 run triple.  Xavier Mieles and Frankie Davis pitched scoreless innings in relief.

Lyndhurst 10 yr All-Stars defeat rival North Arlington 11-0 Behind Maharaja's Arm

The Lyndurst 10u bats continued to stay hot as they put up four runs in the top of the first vs. North Arlington.  Nate Eckert lead off with a single and Michael Rizzo followed with a bunt single.  Billy Mareski and Jalen Maharaja then roped 2-run singles.  Those were all the runs Lyndhurst would need because they received a DOMINANT pitching performance by Jalen Maharaja.  Maharaja went four innings and struck out seven, walked three and did not allow a hit.  Anthony Pizzuti came in after Jalen reached his pitch limit to complete the team no-hitter.  Lyndhurst tacked on runs later in the game on an RBI double by Bobby Czarniewy and a 2-run double by Jake Mayer.  Lyndhurst is now 2-1 in pool play.

Lyndhurst and Waldwick Battle Back and Forth; Bears Prevail and Advance to Semis

Lyndhurst 9 - Waldwick 6
Sunday in Waldwick matched two very good 9u playoff teams in Lyndhurst and Waldwick, and both teams wore their hitting shoes from the outset. The visiting Bears were all over Waldwick in the 1st, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead behind RBIs from Jake Kuenzle, Anthony Amaro and Ryan Lora that scored Abraham Martinez, Jack Nowinski and Shawn Bellenger. Waldwick quickly answered and took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 1st when their first 4 hitters laced base hits. Lyndhurst 8u travel team closes out spring season by splitting over weekend.

May 21st
LYNDHURST BEARS 6 - RIDGEWOOD MAROON 4
On Saturday afternoon on Deloy field, the 8u boys took to the diamond and showed incredible heart and fight when they came back from and early 4-0 deficit to over take Ridgewood and win 6-4. On the first pitch of the game, the Ridgewood lead off batter laced a rocket line drive which was snagged by shortstop Jayson Bellenger on a great defensive play for the first out. But Ridgewood would then get 6 consecutive batters on base leading to 3 runs and the early lead. They would add a 4th run in the second, and again threaten in the 3rd but leave the bases loaded. The bottom half of the 3rd would prove to be the Bears' inning as they would score all 6 of their runs for the deciding margin. Luca Riccio would drive in the first Lyndhurst run, with a walk - Anthony Ricigliano, who lead off with a single. Landon Bonilla, Ryan Lemanowicz and Bellenger also drove in Lorenzo Bufi, Joey Brennen and Riccio which tied the score at 4. With 2 outs, Matt Jarvis got a huge base hit to give the Bears the lead when he drove in Lemanowicz. Max Gonzalez capped off the scoring when he walked in Bellenger for the 6-4 lead. Bellenger came on in relief of Alex DiMase, and got the win with 2 scoreless innings. Tyler Herman got the save with the final 2 innings of work. With the bases loaded in the last inning, Herman got the final batter to ground out to Bellenger at short, who flipped to Jarvis at 3rd base to end the Ridgewood threat. The Bears had earned a hard-fought win!

May 22nd
TEANECK 13 - LYNDHURST 3
After a big win Saturday, the Bears headed to Teaneck on Sunday morning to close out the spring travel season against the top, and undefeated, team in the NJSBL. Lyndhurst came out swinging in the 1st when both Ryan Lemanowicz smashed a hard line drive to second base and Tyler Herman bombed a shot deep to center. Both were robbed of hits by amazing defensive plays by Teaneck. But, it was evident that the Bears wouldn't lie down for the first place team. Teaneck would jump out to an early lead though, and ultimately win big late in the game, but not without a Lyndhurst fight. Alex DiMase had 2 RBIs, one of them on a hard single in the 2nd that gave the Bears their first run. Max Gonzalez walked twice and scored 2 of the 3 Lyndhurst runs. Ryan Brown was a bright spot on the mound, when he pitched a scoreless 3rd inning, striking out the side and keeping the Bears in the game. Lyndhurst ends the spring season with a record of 2-6, but despite that, showed tremendous improvement and great heart for a very young and inexperienced team, especially in the final 5 games of the season in which they won 2 (and 2 of the losses were by only 1 run).

COCCIA’S PITCHING LEADS THE WAY

May 18, 2016

Coccia 15 - Jimmy’s 5:  Coccia’s pitchers have struggled all season long, but the stars were aligned tonight to help lead Coccia to it’s first win of the season.  Kyle Talleksen & Ryan Brown combined for 4 innings of beautifully pitched baseball.  The pitching wasn’t the only factor for Coccia, their mighty bats remained hot under the watch of Nate Barriteau, Brandon Del Piano, and Brandon Willerton who combined for 8 of Coccia’s runs.

In the first inning, after a few walks, Barriteau had an RBI single to start Coccia’s lead.  In the top of the third, Andrew Carrion of Jimmy’s had an RBI single of his own to cut Coccia’s lead to within 3 runs.  In the bottom half of the third, Del Piano & Willerton both singled in a run to increase their lead.  In the next inning, Jimmy’s Joe Brennen had an RBI double which he tried to stretch into a triple before being called out at third on an excellent relay from Kenny Robledo in Leftfield to Brown to Del Piano at third base.  In the bottom of the inning, Del Piano crushed a bases loaded double to left-center that scored 2 runs with the third runner being gunned down at home on a Jimmy’s relay of their own from Joe Sweeney to the catcher Dean Woolis.  The inning ended with a 3 run walk off, inside the park homerun by Willerton which completed the game.

Max Gonzalez and Andrew Carrion both pitched a very nice game for Jimmy’s.

Early Lead, then Great Comeback not Enough for Lyndhurst 8u

May 15, 2016

Montvale 7 - Lyndhurst 8u 6 The Lyndhurst 8u team travelled to Montvale on a cold, fall-like Sunday and jumped out to an 5-0 first inning lead. The lead would slip away during the game until the Bears tied it with 2 outs in the last inning 6-6 before losing in heartbreaking fashion in the bottom of the 6th. Lyndhurst picked up where they left off after yesterday’s big win with a 5-run first inning behind a big 2-rbi single from Max Gonzalez and RBIs from Joey Bufi, Lorenzo Bufi and Landon Bonilla. Inexplicably the bats then went silent and despite excellent pitching from 5 Lyndhurst pitchers, the lead would slip away and Montvale would take a 6-5 lead going into the final inning. Ryan Lemanowicz started and went 2 solid innings, striking out 6. Joey Rizzo, Ryan Brown, Matt Jarvis and Gonzalez followed with an inning each of great pitching. In their final ups, Lyndhurst would push across the tying run to stay alive. Rizzo walked and stole second. Anthony Ricigliano then hit a hard smash to 2nd base and was thrown out at first, but Rizzo trucked around third, scrambled home and slid in safely just beating the throw and tag to tie the game. Montvale, rallied in the bottom of the inning with their last licks and the game was prolonged when pitcher Max Gonzalez snared a grounder and threw home to catcher Ryan Brown, who applied the tag to the runner and cut down Montvale’s first threat. But, in the end, Montvale would “walk-off” with the win when the batter walked in the winning run on a 3-2 count with 2 outs. Jayson Bellenger reached base 3 times on 2 walks and a hit and stole 4 bases. Jarvis and Joey Bufi also had a hit and 2 steals apiece.

They would add another in the 3rd inning when Joey Brennen’s RBI drove in Anthony Ricigliano. The Lyndhurst pitching and defense was on point as Alex DiMase took the mound as the starter and went 2 scoreless innings thanks to 2 stellar defensive plays by Bellenger at short, one on a diving catch of a fly ball and another on a hard smash in which he knocked down and flipped to Lemanowicz at 2nd base to end a Ridgewood scoring threat in the 2nd inning. DiMase struck out 4 in his 2 innings of work. The Bears rallied for 6 big runs in the 4th to take a 8-0 lead, highlighted by base hits by Bellenger, Matthew Jarvis and a big, booming 2-RBI double by DiMase as well an RBI groundout by Tyler Herman and RBI walks from Joey Rizzo and Ricigliano. Bellenger was on to pitch the 3rd and 4th innings and, after walking the leadoff man in both innings, promptly struck out the side each time for a total of 6 K’s and kept Ridgewood scoreless. In the 5th Jayson then drove in Luca Riccio with a RBI single to pad the lead. Herman closed out the game for Lyndhurst on the mound. The Bears weren’t finished as they began another rally in the 6th and scored 2 more runs behind RBI’s again from Rizzo and Ricigliano, which scored Ryan Brown and Jarvis with both of their second runs of the game. With no one out and the bases loaded with Bears, the rains came down heavier and the game was stopped and declared official and over. The 8u’s had their first win of the spring season!

IACL was backed by solid pitching performances from Joshua Santibanez (4IP) & Jalen Maharaja (2IP) as they combined for 11 strikeouts.  For IACL, Joe McNie, Danny Martinez, Anthony Amaro, Abraham Martinez, & Josh (3-4 with 2 doubles, a 3-run HR, & 3 RBI) each scored 2 runs, while Steven, Jalen (2-4 with a single, double & 4 RBI's), & Matt each scored a run.  For BCG, Ryan Partyka had a single with 2 runs scored, while teammate Kyle Henning singled and scored a run of his own.  Ricky Rainey also went 3-3 with 2 runs scored.  Benjamin Morris started the game for BCG and held IACL scoreless through 3 innings.
