Eagles Bring Home "THREE-PEAT"!

October 14, 2011

The O'Connor Eagles went into a very hostile stadium tonight and brought home their third consecutive victory of the season by defeating the Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions for the third year in a row in a 37-34 overtime barnburner!

Mountain Ridge took the opening kickoff and marched methodically down the field, capping their opening drive with a 20 yard TD pass to the left corner of the endzone. O'Connor got the ball and proceeded to go three and out. On 4th down, however, a Mountain Ridge defender knocked down O'Connor punter Brendon Erickson after he kicked the ball away. The resulting 15 yard penalty gave the Eagles new life, and they proceeded to put together a drive of their own. Zenas Morton broke through the line on several solid runs for the Eagles. The drive was capped when Erickson rolled right and found Austin Cottrell in the back of the end zone. Danny Turski added the extra point as the first quarter expired, and we had a new ball game.

Both defenses stepped up and held fast in the second quarter. O'Connor did manage to put together a drive, but it stalled at the Mountain Ridge 20 yard line when an Erickson pass harmlessly hit the turf on fourth down. The first half also ended in a rough way for the Eagles as Erickson was hit simultaneously by two Mountain Ridge defenders and had to be helped from the field.

The third quarter started sluggishly for the Eagles. Although Erickson returned, the offense sputtered with two false start penalties. When the Eagles attempted to regain the lost yardage via the pass, Erickson threw into traffic and the ball bounced straight up, then down into the waiting arms of a Mountain Ridge defender. The Mountain Lions took quick advantage by scoring and taking a 14-7 lead. The Eagles did mount a drive and were able to answer with a 33 yard Turski field goal, but the Mountain Lions answered that score with another touchdown of their own and took a 21-10 lead into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter began with all the momentum on the side of the Mountain Lions, and they capped off a drive with a field goal to take a 24-10 lead. That was the turning point for the Eagles. "Everything was going their way. They were inside the five yard line with first and goal. We knew we had to find a way to stop them," said O'Connor Senior Linebacker Zach Rizzo. "When we held them to a field goal on that drive, we knew we were still in it." Two Rizzo blitzes and solid pass defense were the key to the stop. On first and goal, Rizzo shot through the middle and dropped the Mountain Lions running back for a 3 yard loss. The Mountain Lions then resorted to the pass and after a second down incompletion, another Rizzo blitz caused the Mountain Ridge quarterback to make a poor throw on third down.

With 10 minutes left in the contest, the O'Connor offense took the ensuing kickoff and marched down the field to paydirt. As they moved the ball, they gained momentum. Morton had two key runs for first downs and Erickson connected with Cottrell on a 50 yard pass and run down to the Mountain Ridge 1 yard line. By the time Rizzo took the handoff and crossed the goal line on the next play, the momentum had moved completely to the side of the Eagles. The defense held Mountain Ridge to a "three and out" on their next possession and the stage was set for the Eagles offense. Erickson hit Cottrell on a key third down, then threw a short pass to Wes Meredith and he took off running down the O'Connor sideline, moving the ball deep into Mountain Ridge territory. Morton finished off the drive on the next play, with a 16 yard run up the middle. Turski added the key extra point for a 24-24 tie and a new ball game with five minutes left.

In an emotional game like this, things are bound to turn unexpectedly, and they did for the Eagles on the next Mountain Ridge possession. The Mountain Lions caught the Eagles off guard and drove the length of the field to take a 31-24 lead, but the Eagles still had 2 minutes left. The Eagles moved to the Mountain Lions 35 yard line on passes from Erickson to Cottrell, Meredith and Jared Barinque, but on 2nd down it appeared all was lost as a scrambling Erickson lost the football in the middle of a host of Mountain Lions. When the dust cleared, Erickson emerged from the pile with the football, and on third down, hit Meredith down the left sideline with a pass to the Mountain Ridge two yard line. Rizzo followed a wall of blockers on the next play into the end zone. Turski hit another key extra point in businesslike fashion for a 31-31 tie, but Mountain Ridge still had 35 seconds on the clock and would have another chance. The Eagles defense held firm however, and overtime was on it's way.

In the overtime, the Eagles won the toss and deferred possession to the Mountain Lions. The Eagles stuffed the run on first down, Rizzo sacked the Mountain Ridge quarterback on second down, and a third down pass flew harmlessly through the back of the endzone. The Mountain Lions then converted the field goal for a brief 34-31 lead.

The Eagles needed only two plays to score. They relied on Morton for both, and after a pounding, twisting run down to the 1 yard line on first down, he stretched the ball over the goal line for the score and a much deserved Eagles' victory.

"We were down two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but the kids never gave up," said Coach John Rodriguez. "We watched a truly amazing accomplishment tonight by this team."
