The Black Diamonds B team took top honors at the 2014 Ogden Ice Breaker tournament last weekend, beating all comers in the round-robin games, and sealing the deal with a shoot-out win over the Lady Grizzlies in the Championship. The C team played well, finishing the tournament with 2 ties (both games against the eventual championship contenders, Park City Predators [1-1] and the Idaho Hurl Scouts [0-0]) and one loss (2-0) to the Wasatch Wings, who played in the consolation game.

Black Diamonds Take 1st and 2nd at 2013 Goal Digger Tournament
The Black Diamonds sent two teams again to this year's Goal Digger Tournament in Park City, UT December 13-15, and came away with the top spot in the Advanced B Division, and Second Place in the C Division.
The C team started the tournament on Friday night with a 3-1 win over the host team, the Ice Vixen in Park City.
Saturday's games were all in Park City. The C team had to play three games on Saturday as there were only three teams in their division. Each team would play the other twice during the round robin to determine the championship matchup. The early morning game was against the Blackstars from California, and although hard-fought, ended in a 3-1 loss. The afternoon game was a rematch of Friday night, and the Diamonds once again came out on top, beating the Vixen 4-2, with the final score on an empty netter by JoAnna Baugh on a selfless pass from Dawn Zandberg after the break-out. It was quintessential Diamonds hockey! The Saturday night game was a rematch of the morning game against the Blackstars, and served as prep for the championship, ending in a 1-1 tie. In the championship on Sunday, the Diamonds and Blackstars met again, with the Blackstars besting the Diamonds by the narrowest of margins, winning the game 1-0.

The Ba team started the weekend with a battle in Salt Lake City against local rivals Utah Blades, and after exchanging goals throughout the game, lost in the last minute of regulation by 3-2. It was a wake-up call for all the team that they would need to put their best team effort forward to compete in the strong 6-team Advanced B Division field.
Saturday's games were in Park City, and started out with a matchup against the Blackstars' upper division team. The Diamonds played with more confidence and teamwork, and came away with a 3-1 win. Knowing that not just a victory but an improved goal differential would mean the difference between playing in the championship and the consolation game the next day, the Ba team poured it on in their next contest against a depleted Jackson team (their top player broke her tibia in their morning game), winning 8-3 and besting Phoenix by one goal to qualify for a championship rematch against the Utah Blades.
The championship game was a nail-biter from start to finish. The Blades scored first in the 1st period, and held that lead until mid-way through the 3rd period, when the Diamonds scored two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead. Undeterred, the Blades fought back hard and scored the tying goal with less than 2 minutes remaining in regulation. The game went into a 5-minute overtime, but neither team was able to capitalize on any scoring chances, even when the Diamonds went on a 5-3 powerplay advantage. The game would finally be decided on a shoot-out, but once again, after going through five shooters on both teams (2-2), the game was still tied. It took the final pair of shooters to decide the outcome; the Blades failed to score on their next attempt, and Shawn Winder put in the final and deciding goal to end the contest and give the Diamonds the tournament championship title.
