STRIKES! Finishes Second at Home

July 27, 2014
STRIKES! Baseball hosted the Commerce Wood Bat Tournament August 25-27th at Commerce High School.  Five teams competed in the three pool games and a single elimination bracket.  STRIKES! finished 2-0-1 in the pool games and earned the top seed.  STRIKES! defeated the North Texas Pride 6-4 on Friday night.  Jeffrey Hilsdon (Crowley's Ridge College commit) earned the win for STRIKES! while Commerce' own Jaisten Wilson led the offense.
Saturday morning opened with STRIKES! facing Commerce' Monster Sports Academy 18U squad.  The teams faced off for the third time this summer with STRIKES! Clayton Burkhammer (Sam Rayburn) struggling on the mound and his defense giving up 7 unearned runs before Commerce' Preston Matthews came in to hold Monster to just one additional run.  Cody Lambright (CRC signee) led the offense with a 2 for 3 game with 3 runs scored.  STRIKES! had the winning run at second base when Garrett Puyear (Texas Wesleyan commit) was picked off at second base to end the game in an 8-8 tie.
STRIKES! finished pool play with a 7-1 win over the Broncos 18u.  Puyear threw a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and earned his first win of the season.  He also led the offensive attack with an RBI single in the fifth inning.  Brandon Hudson (Commerce, 2014) double in the third inning to score another run for STRIKES!
Sunday's bracket started with Monster facing the Broncos.  The Broncos jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and added three inf the fourth, but Monster battled back with three runs in the fifth inning. The comeback was motivated by a triple off the bat of Commerce' Tre Wilson.  Wilson tried for an in-the-park homerun, but was thrown out on a perfect relay form right field to home.  Monster needed a quick sixth inning to have an opportunity to score anymore runs.  Pitcher Kevin Smith (Lone Oak) threw enough strikes to force the Broncos to swing the bat and finished the half inning in less than the 7 minutes remaining on the clock.  But the efforts fell short as the Broncos advanced with a 7-4 win to face STRIKES! again.
Josh McKeithen (Williams Baptist signee) took the mound for STRIKES! in the semifinal game against the Broncos.  He struck out 11 when his no-no was broken in the sixth inning with single by the Broncos nine-hole batter.  McKeithen took the win and helped his own cause with a 2 for 3 day at the plate.  Matthews added a pair of hits along with Puyear.  The win advanced STRIKES! to the title game.
Keaton Potts (Commerce) took the mound for STRIKES! against the North Texas Bombers.  The Bombers scored one run in each of the first three innings before STRIKES came back in the fourth inning to score two.  The second run of the inning was scored on a missed bunt attempt from Lane Ramsey (CRC signee) which turned what would be a squeeze play into a stolen base at home for McKeithen.  STRIKES! game up four in the top of the fifth inning before Jaisten Wilson came in and earned the third out of the inning on one pitch.  STRIKES! could only must one run in the bottom of the inning, giving the Bombers the title with the 7-3 score.

NSUBailey Weaver, a 2014 graduate of Commerce High School and a former STRIKES! players, will hope to continue his playing career at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA in the Fall.  He has been invited to walk on at NSU while attending school on an academice scholarship.
