Fare Thee Well....Darren Downs, 1960-2014

September 30, 2014

A tribute to Coach Darren. Our buddy, trainer and Coach. Forever Family

It is with great sadness that we share with you the news of the passing of one of our own, Darren Downs. Darren passed away peacefully this past Friday, surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer.

Darren was a lifelong soccer player, playing his club and high school ball in Brick and playing on over a dozen men’s teams in leagues throughout the state as an adult.

Most significant were Darren’s contributions towards the development of youth players on teams he had either coached himself or trained over the years. This included several teams that he either coached or trained within Twin County. Darren willingly shared his passion for the game of "Futbol" with all eager pupils.

Darren trained all players of all athletic abilities the same way. Knowing that soccer is mainly a game of “good and bad decisions”, Darren always believed the most important responsibility of any coach or trainer was to help the players identify what the “good decisions” were.

Darren was a person who did not judge his soccer success by the number of ‘plastic trophies’ or ‘cheap ribbons’ (his words) that the teams he worked may or may not have won. Darren cared intensely about how the game was played, focusing on development over a 'winning at all costs' mentality. He took pride in watching many of his players go on to play at higher levels in College and even in some pro leagues internationally...testament to the success of his approach to the game.

Locally you can see Darren’s ‘Soccer DNA’ displayed in several High School players playing varsity for over 6 schools and by many of the players in various ages throughout our club. All demonstrating the same quality decision making, excellent foot skills and passion for “Futbol”.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Downs family at this time. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Darren will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

The Winter Classic lived up to its name. Heavy snow prohibited us from playing our final game. We were finalists based on our 3 game performance and head to head record. I do not think these girls will ever forget about this one! Nice weekend for Twin County Force!
