On this date in 1920 Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman suffered a fractured skull when he was hit in the head by pitcher Carl Mays. Chapman died twelve hours later in a New York City hospital. He is the only Major League Baseball player to have been killed in a game.

August 16th, 1948 marked the death of another baseball player in New York City. Babe Ruth died at the age of 53 from throat cancer.
