Aces Wrap Up National Tournament With A Close Loss

August 3, 2022

After the remainder of the round-robin portion of the 2022 CNOBF tounrament was rained out, the Aces sat 4th out of 8 teams, meaning they advanced to the Tier 1 semifinals vs the same team they faced in their first game, the Nova Scotia Mariners.

This time, the Aces did not look overmatched as they battled the Mariners pitch for pitch. The Mariners scored an unearned run in the 3rd to take a 1-0 lead. Things stayed that way until the bottom of the 6th as the Aces held a 4-3 lead in hits and had left the bases loaded in the 5th. In the 6th, the Mariners used a few bloop hits and a few solid hits to push three runs across to make it 4-0, and that's the way it ended.

Kevin Hussey and Peter Westlake combined for 5 innings and allowed no earned runs. Lee Mathe, Marcio Sacilotto, Matt Smith, and Kevin Horton each had a hit.

The Mariners moved on to the final where they were defeated 2-1 by a Calgary team called the Capital Tiger Padres.

Kevin Hussey earned the Aces' tournament MVP honour as a result of his three strong innings on the mound, a solid game behind the plate, and a clutch two-run double.

Overall, the tournament was a great success in helping to finally get the ACES program off the ground. The cameraderie amongst the players grew as the weekend progressed and everyone seemed enthused about future tournaments and participation.

Thanks to the folloiwng players for a great weekend!

Aces Defeat Charlottetown

July 30, 2022

The OSBA Aces squared their CNOBF 2022 record at 1-1 with a convincing 12-2 victory over Charlottetown. Starter Kevin Horton threw three good innings, followed by two shutout frames from Julian Testani and one perfect inning from Marco Sacilotto.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Aces countered with 4 runs of their own. The big blow was a 2-run laser beam double from Kevin Hussey. Mike Caicco then made it 3-2 with an RBI single and Caicco's subsequent heads-up baserunning allowed another run to score.

In the 2nd. Fil Vazzano's sacrifice fly scored Peter Westlake to make it 5-2. in the 5th, Lee Mathe's sacrifice fly scored Mike Shuryn to give the Aces a 4 run lead.

In the 6th, a 6-run outburst concluded the game.

The nightcap against Yarmouth was rained out.

Aces Drop Opener in Halifax

July 29, 2022

The OSBA Aces hung tough but dropped a 4-1 decision to the Nova Scotia Mariners in the first game of the CNOBF National Championships in Halifax. The Mariners' pitchers took advantage of a wide strike zone and shut down the Aces' bats. After falling behind 2-0, Mike Shuryn singled for the first OSBA hit in the 4th and was quickly cashed in by a ringing double from Julian Testani. This drew the Aces to within a run, but that would be as close as they would get.

Pitchers Peter Westlake, Stuart Kingston, and Marco Sacilotto were all effective in their stints.

About half of the Mariners roster will be playing for Team Nova Scotia in the upcoming Senior National tournament so losing a close game to a solid team was a moral victory of sorts. The Aces are back at it with two games tomorrow against Charlottetown and Yarmouth and hope to shift from moral victories to actual victories.
