    ANNE ARUNDEL UMPIRE ASSOCIATION

Welcome to the website of the Anne Arundel Umpire Association (AAUA) located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. We are an organization, founded by Frank "Jocko" Svoboda, which has been providing quality umpires for amateur baseball in central Maryland since 1977. This site is by and for the members of the AAUA, but we welcome all visitors, especially other amateur umpires and all lovers of the grand game of baseball.
With this site we hope to publicize our fine organization and tell the world a bit about AAUA. We also hope to pick up new recruits from time to time as people in our vicinity see the site and join us. We'll tell you all about our association, the membership requirements, our training program, and all you have to do to get the ball rolling is contact us.
We also hope to provide our visitors with some useful umpiring topics, from equipment, methods, and practices, to other umpire sites, to a collection of interesting and amusing stories about baseball and umpiring.

    Introduction

AAUA is one of the premier amateur umpire associations in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. We officiate all of the public high school baseball games and most of the over fourteen year old amateur baseball games in Anne Arundel County Maryland.

Every year, before the season, we sign a contract with the Anne Arundel County public schools to provide umpires for their varsity and junior varsity games. In addition, we sign sign individual contracts with numerous American Legion, travel and recreational leagues in the area to provide umpires for their summer leagues. We then assign officials to work these games.

    Demand for Qualified Umpires

The demand for umpires keeps growing and keeps us in a constant search for qualified umpires.
    * If you are an experienced umpire looking for an association to call home, we can provide assignments. We generally have to turn away prospective new business each season because of the umpire shortage.
    * If you are just wondering if officiating is right for you, we can provide inexpensive training and guidance that will help you make the call.

    Training

New member training sessions will begin on January 10, 2008 and will continue through the first week of March 2008. These training sessions will be on Thursday nights from 7:00 PM to 9:00PM and on Sunday afternoons from 1:30PM to 5:30PM at Corkran Middle School in Glen Burnie, MD. The training sessions cover everything you need to know to begin umpiring from clothing and equipment, rules, handling game situations to proper mechanics. This training is required to become an umpire in our association if you have not previously umpired. In addition, we will be sponsoring an umpire clinic on February 2, 2008 at Spalding High School in Severn, MD. Contact Dave Ferris @dbferris32@comcast.net for details.

    Game Assignments

New officials initially gain experience working junior varsity and younger age recreational league games. You will be assigned games with experienced partners who will provide you with valuable insight into umpiring. With these efforts, you will learn the basic rules and umpiring mechanics. Good umpiring takes time and effort.

Games are assigned by a scheduler using computer scheduling software called "The Arbiter". There are always games available to umpire. You can schedule your assignments around your personal schedule. Most high school games begin at 4:00PM on weekdays. Recreational league games usually begin at 6:00PM on weeknights and after 9:00AM on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Our umpiring season runs from the beginning of high school scrimmages in March to the conclusion of Fall Baseball in October.

You will be asked to umpire games in a variety of leagues and areas of Anne Arundel County. This gets you good exposure to more teams, as well as more officials and coaches.

    Equipment
Uniforms & equipment can be purchased several places in the area and through various mail-order suppliers. Visit "Links" to connect to the umpire mail order suppliers. Expect to spend a minimum of $200-$300 in your first year for a complete uniform and equipment. During the winter training classes, our members usually sell used umpire equipment at reduced prices.

    Dues and Game Fees

Our dues will be $80.00 for the 2008 season. These dues cover the licensing fees for "The Arbiter" scheduling software, insurance and other necessary administrative and operating costs of the organization.

Fees vary per game depending on the league.

    Application Form

Click on, complete & submit the following application form
"Application" online. If you have any questions, please call Bert Kelly, AAUA Secretary, at (410)978-6106 or by email @umpire@annearundelumpireassn.com. We welcome new members!

    UNIFORM CHANGE FOR 2008

Members will not be required to remove existing patches from their uniforms this year.

    Yogi Berra Baseball Sayings

    * Always go to other people's funerals; otherwise they won't come to yours.

    * Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical.

    * Because it gets late early (on why it's so tough to play left field in Yankee stadium) .

    * If the people don't want to come out to the park, nobody's gonna stop them.

    * It ain't over till it's over.

    * It's deja vu all over again.

    * No wonder nobody comes here; it's too crowded.

    * We have very deep depth!

    * We made too many wrong mistakes.

    * You can observe a lot by just watching.

    * You don't look so hot, eidier (on being told by the mayor's wife that he looked cool, despite the heat).

    * The ballparks have gotten too crowded. That's why nobody goes to see the game anymore.

One Day the Devil challenged the Lord to a baseball game.
Smiling the Lord proclaimed, "You don't have a chance, I have Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and all the greatest players up here".
"Yes", snickered the devil, "but I have all the umpires."

During a game, the umpire was being jeered and heckled unmercifully from the crowd. After a while, he walked over and sat down next to his chief critic. " What are you doing?" asked the spectator. "Well," said the umpire,"it seems you get the best view from here!"

Three umpires were interviewed about how they call a baseball game. The newest umpire went first. And his response was. "I call them as they are" The two more veteran umpires laughed a bit. The seasoned umpire said “I do the best I can and call them for what I think they are." The veteran umpire laughed and said, "A ball isn’t a ball and a strike isn’t a strike until I say it is."

I don't understand baseball at all, do you? You don't have to understand it. Everything is decided by a man they call a vampire.

What takes longer, running from first base to second, or from second to third?
Second to third, because you have to go through a shortstop.

What's the best day of the week to play a doubleheader?
    Twos-day!

On June 17, 1962, in a game between the Mets and the Cubs at the Polo Grounds, "Marvelous" Marv Thronberry slammed a two-run triple. But while he was catching his breath on third base, Chicago firstbaseman Ernie Banks called for the ball and appealed that Marv had missed first base. The appeal was upheld and he was called out. Mets manager Casey Stengel ran out from the dugout to argue the call until umpire Dusty Boggess said, "Forget it Casey. He didn't touch second either!"
