CMU Hits the Road. Splits with Northwood
The Central Michigan club baseball team hits the road today for the first of four consecutive road games. CMU plays at 2 and 5 p.m. today at Siena Heights University before traveling to Muskegon Community College to play at 1 and 4 p.m. Sunday. "(We have) a stacked team offensively," said club president Dave Kazmer. "But we haven't been able to start out like we expected."

The four road games finish CMU's nonconference play before it plays Great Lakes Conference teams for the remainder of its schedule. "We are going to use these last nonconference games as building games," Kazmer said. "We are going back to fundamentals - the basics of the game."
Kazmer said pitcher and outfielder Dylan Tobin has the potential to help the team build momentum. "We expect to learn a lot from these next four games," Tobin said. "We are also looking to solidify our defense and settle down the pitching."

If Central (6-4) can achieve those goals, Kazmer said it can become a dangerous team. "We have a great team when we are firing on all cylinders." The team still is the hunt for the division title.
"There is only one bid for our conference, so we have to win outright," Tobin said. "There is not much room for error."

CMU holds a 2-3 record in the National Club Baseball Association Great Lakes North Division. Next up for the Chippewas is rival Western Michigan.

"I thought our team played with a lot of intensity and emotion Thursday night," said senior club vice president Mike Kish. "We are still very much in the hunt for our division. I expect this team to be able to bounce back from this slow start and achieve great success this season."

    Thursday split

Central ended last week by splitting a pair of games at Northwood last Thursday. Justin Wade started the first game in CMU's 9-3 win. He earned a complete game win, allowing only one run on three hits. He also struck out four Northwood hitters. "Wade had all of his pitches working for him," Kish said. "A lot of good things can happen when the defense gets off the field quickly."
Wade was aided by some offense as Kish went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Kazmer went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Game two ended differently. Northwood fought hard to overcome an early CMU lead and earned a 10-6 win.

CMU drops two of three to MSU to open conference play
CMU has dug themselves a hole after dropping two of three to MSU this past weekend at Lumberjack Park. After dropping the first game of the series 9-5, CMU was able to bounce back and take game two, 6-4. CMU came out ready to play Sunday by jumping out to a early 6-0 lead through five innings of no-hit baseball from Senior David Schluafman. MSU was able to get back into the game after a couple costly CMU errors to even the score 6-6. CMU couldn't get the bats going again while MSU took advantage of the walks and errors. The final score was MSU on top of the Chips 15-6.

    RECAP

    Game 1 - MSU 9 - CMU 5

Ken Hagino struggled early as MSU jumped out to an early 6-0 lead through 3 and a half innings. The CMU bats came to life in the bottom of the 4th to cut the lead 6-5. However, the Chips couldn't hold off the MSU bats as they dropped game one 9-5. Mike Kish, Dave Kazmer, and R.C. Murphy led the Chips with two hits apiece.

    Game 2 - MSU 4 - CMU 6

CMU pitcher Andrew Criswell was outstanding on the mound, pitching a complete game for his first win of the season. Criswell tallied 5 strikeouts and allowed only one run through the first 6 innings to give the Chips a comfortable lead. Offensively, B.J. Wells broke out in his first game of the year, going 3 for 4 at the plate with a double, homerun, and four RBI's. Outfielder David Mintz continued to impress, adding two hits and a stolen base.

Central got the bats going early, led by the big catcher Jay Schabel. Schabel was 3 for 4 at the dish with a double and a homerun. Second baseman Casey Bess had two hits and a run scored. DH Mike Kish was 1-2 with three walks and two stolen bases. CMU jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead behind the steady arm of David Schlaufman. Schlaufman no-hit the Spartan's through five innings of ball before the wheels fell off the wagon for the Chips. Walks and errors gave MSU all the momentum that they would need to put Central away for good with two big run-scoring innings.

    CMU vs. Ferris St. Postponed
The Central Michigan Club Baseball team will have to wait another week to open up conference play. The CMU vs. Ferris State game has been postponed due to poor playing conditions in Northern Michigan. The game will be made up later in the season; however, no date has been set.

The Great Lakes North Conference has already made a mark on the NCBA this season. The North Conference has a combined record of 15-2, with all games being played in Plant City, Fl. It is the best conference record in the NCBA. Central Michigan ranks 3rd in the GRL Conference power rankings produced by the NCBA. Conference rival Michigan State is atop of the rankings with a 5-0 record while Ferris State is ranked 4th, also with a 5-0 record.
