Varsity Head Coach
Scott Allen

Scott Allen is the St. Paul VI (PVI) varsity girls’ head coach and director of the girls’ basketball program. The program has three teams: varsity, junior varsity (JV) and freshmen. Coach Allen joined PVI in 2002 and developed a national level basketball program. The Lady Panthers compete in two athletic leagues: The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) and the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA). The WCAC comprises of top Catholic High Schools from Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia and widely regarded as the most competitive high school basketball conference in the country. The VISAA is the leading independent high school league in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Lady Panthers had an outstanding 2018-18 season with a won-loss record of 27-8 They won the VISAA Division I State Championship. The 2019 VISAA Division I State Championship title was the 13h straight title for the Lady Panthers, setting a national high school record. It was the 20th state championship for PVI in the past 25 years. Few high schools in America have matched the success of PVI over the past five years. The Lady Panthers won-loss record is a remarkable 156-14, which includes five VISAA Division I state championship titles, three WCAC Championships, three national-level tournament championships and being nationally ranked every season.

Coach Allen teaches that a true champion excels in the classroom and on the basketball court. The program takes great pride in having a large number of student athletes. During the 2016-17 school year, the team’s cumulative grade point average exceeded 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. More than 21 PVI players from Coach Allen teams have played basketball in college and all of his players have pursued academic studies at the collegiate level.

Coach Allen is passionate about advancing the sport of basketball. He created the Art Turner Memorial (ATM) Showcase, which is a national event that attracts elite high school girls’ basketball teams across the county. ATM is a three-day event held annually on the PVI campus. The 2017 showcase drew 18 teams with 20 college-bound recruits and more than 70 university/college coaches. Coach Allen also created the D.C. Metro College Showcase. The Showcase is sanctioned by the NCAA and gives high school players an opportunity to demonstrate their basketball skills in front of college coaches and scouts. This one-day event is held annually and is one of the top college recruiting showcases on the east coast. During the summer months, Coach Allen organizes the St. Paul VI Girls’ & Boys’ Summer Basketball Camps. These camps teach basketball fundamentals and game skills in a format that is fun and challenging. Since its creation eleven years ago, more than 1200 children have participated in the camps.

Coach Allen has been recognized locally and nationally for his accomplishments. Last season, he was selected the 2018 VISAA Virginia State Division 1 Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year and this was the ninth time Coach Allen has received this honor. His other awards include, 2016-17 MaxPreps Virginia High School Coach of the Year, the 2015-16 ALL-USA Girls Basketball National Coach of the Year by USA Today and the 2014-15 Pat Summitt Trophy as the National Coach of the Year by the Women’s Coaches Basketball Association. Allen has also been named WCAC Coach of the Year twice and the 2014 Washington Post girls’ basketball coach of the year.
