Columbus senior defensive back line of RB Andy Fernandez, LB Fabio Castaneda and CBs KC Quintero & Joey Tolgyesi have started for the varsity team since their sophomore year.

They lead their team last year to Columbus 1st state soccer championship by shutting out an undefeated Oviedo team in the semifinal and high scoring Boca Raton in the finals.

This year they lead Columbus to their 1st GMAC Soccer Championship by shutting out their three very good opponents: Varela, Krop and American.

They also co-lead their District in least goals scored again even thought one of their CB missed more than the 1st half of the season while kicking & punting for the Columbus state finalist football team and the other CB jointly missed four key district games in which 5 of the 10 total goals were scored.

In all fairness, these players, specially KC, Andy and Fabio, deserve serious consideration for the The Miami Herald 1st All Miami Dade Team.

The votes were already put in at the coaches meeting. Lots of deserving players don't get picked for first or second team but there are only so many spots, and most teams deserve at least one player being recognized for playing hard for their school.

Are there teams full of talented players that might be better than some of the boys who made it on the first or second teams? Absolutely. But then we would just be putting every spot with Gulliver or Doral or Columbus players when the truth is that some players still shine during the season despite not being surrounded by as talented of a team.

Best players should be voted in regardless of the team that they play for.

What criteria would you use? How would coaches know or the Miami Herald? All coaches think their own players are the best.

At the end of the day is all about results, you see it in all sports (soccer, football, basketball, etc.) all levels (pro, college, etc.) and even in the national teams.

Gulliver was the only team from Dade to win State, they were without a doubt the best team in Miami, with at least three of their players signing scholarships with top division 1 teams such as UCLA and North Carolina. If let say that 5 or 6 or 7 or more of their players were the best players in their position, they should all have been voted to the 1st all dade team. No player should have been denied a 1st team vote just because his school have too many players and others schools deserve at least one.

Selection of all star teams is all about the players not the schools.
