| In steamy July, Hazel Park head football coach Scott Guthrie estimates he has between 40 and 50 potential players participating in weight lifting and speed drills. That is more than twice as many as he had in 2012.
Improvements to Hazel Park’s athletic complex, including an artificial turf football and soccer field artificial turf practice field new tennis courts new baseball and softball fields with brick dugouts and press box area and a new track have sparked interest in Viking athletics.
“There are five coaches on the football staff and all of us graduated from Hazel Park,” said Guthrie. “So it is not only exciting for the kids but for us too.”
The practice field used by the football and soccer teams as well as the marching band was uneven and full of dips and bumps. The playing field had some of the same issues and was the only natural-grass football field left in the Oakland Activities Association.
