Roberto Torres is tough on the hill to lead Sox to 'ship.
Roberto Torres didn't allow a hit until the 6th and ended up only allowing 1 run in 8 innings and struck out 10 tough Pirates. Dave White came in to close things out in the 9th to earn the save with help on a game ending DP started by Torres who was now playing 2B. White also made a diving play in CF to save at least one run in the 6th.
For the Pirates, starter Mike Bodlovich was just a sharp, only allowing 1 earned run in his complete game effort.
The Red Sox only scored in the 2nd inning, as Steve Rombro led off with a single, Dave Becker bunted him over and was safe on a FC, which was then followed by a Nick Haley single to load the bases. Ethan Wolferman hit a fairly deep fly to right-center field which was dropped, allowing the first Sox run to score. Bodlovich got tough from there and fanned the next two batter. But then Michael Rosenblum worked a tough AB and got clipped by a pitch to bring in another run, and Chris Healey followed with a big 2-run single. That was it for the Sox hitters for the game.
The Pirates had a couple hits in the 6th, and 7th innings but could not score. Torres was tiring, but kept going until the 9th. The Pirates Dale Dymkoski beat out a single and Cory Rothert walked. It was time to bring in a fresh arm; Dave White. Eddie Alfano greeted him with a single to load the bases, and things looked very promising for the Bucs. Then White got tough, a strikeout, a walk producing the only Pirate run, followed by a game-ending hard grounder DP. Great game by two good teams on a hot day at a beautiful field.
