Close Game - George Brett Incident Revisited

Today’s contest was between the LA Colt .45’s and the high falutin’ “Hollywood” Angels, with their coke parties at Shelley Long’s house and their long parties with the Koch brothers. The hardscrabble lives of the rough and tumble 45s didn’t cotton to the champagne socialists in the other dugout. You could cut the tension with one of those new tension cutting devices. Either that or two groups of old guys played a meaningless amateur baseball game.
Bob Diaz threw eight solid innings and made big pitches when he needed to, fanning eleven Angels. Mark Freeman had a big double in the first, that plated two for the Colts.
Elliot Reinfeld and Gary Cozine both had two hit games out of the bottom two slots in the lineup, picking up the top of the line up, that went 1-11. Greg Lemaster also had two hits, a walk and three stolen bases.
Jess Whitehill kept the Halos in the game, hurling six strong innings. The Angels had runners in scoring position several times, but were stymied by Diaz time and again.
The game could have gone either way, so nice to have competitive baseball games. Hats off to the Angels for assembling a quality squad.
And, in a nod to George Brett... in the 4th inning, with 2 out, the Angels' Gio Smith singles and steals 2nd base. Billy (Brett) Johnson singles him in. As the 45s catcher picks up the bat to get it out of the way, he notices an excessive amount of stickiness. The bat is given to the ump for inspection. The 2 umps confer and call "Brett" out for having pine tar all the way up the bat.
Brett's AB and RBI are changed to an out and the run is erased. For anyone thinking about trying to pull a fast one... NO excessive pine tar, corked bats or steroids will be tolerated in our league.
There was no Brett outrage, just kind of a laugh about the whole situation.
