Diamonds Win A Nailbiter
The York Diamonds won a tightly contested game on a Jason Stober RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to lead York to 6-5 win over the scrappy Sentinel Devils.
York jumped out to an early 3-0 lead off newcomer Kevin Tierney in the first on a Rob Hofstetter siingle, a Jeff Hofstetter walk, an RBI single by Pete Zakkak, and a 2-run single by Eric Foley. The Devils countered with 2 in the second off Jeff Castronaro on a Peter Staffacos 2 run. Paul Hynes hit his second home run of the year to knot the game at 3 before an Eric Foley RBI double gave York the 4-3 lead after 3 innings. Tierney worked 4 solid innings for the Devils before giving way to Jamie Bennett. James Fensom hit his league leading 5th home run to tie the game at 4 in the sixth inning. York retook the lead in the bottom of the inning after Jeremy Service had his second hit of the night and Tyler Sloan pinch ran and scored on a Rob Hofstetter sacrifice fly.
Castronaro pitched 6 inning, striking out 5 and Rob Hofstetter pitched the final three frames. In the top of the ninth, after a Diamonds' error, Richard Geddy doubled off the wall to tie the game, but Hofstetter pitched out of a jam and finished the night with 6 strikeouts.
In the bottom of the ninth, Pete Zakkak reached on a 2-base error, Eric Foley was walked intentionally, and then Rick Yez laid down a clutch sacrifice bunt and was safe on an error. One out later, Stober whacked a ball to the wall to score the winning run. A relieved Paul Freeman was happy with the win, complimenting his team's pitching and the sacrifice bunt by Yez, and the hitting from Foley, Serivce, and Zakkak and the game winning hit by Stober. Next league game is next Thursday vs the Mississauga Colt 45's.
