Diamonds Prevail Despite Presence of Leafy Salad

The York Diamonds captured a hard-fought deciding game with a 10-4 win over the Toronto Cardinals last night at Keelesdale Park to win the best-of-5 semifinal by a count of 3 games to 2. Home field advantage proved to critical as all games were won by the home team.
Eric Foley won his third game of the series and fourth of the playoffs with another solid performance, working 8 innings and allowing 6 hits. Trung Duong took the loss for the visitors. After allowing a run in the top of the first, York struck back in the bottom of the frame, on a Rudy Naraine two-run homer. Other clutch hits were a 2-run double by Don Cantwell and a 2-run single by Steve Foley. Foley and Neil Parekh had 3 apiece for the Diamonds.Stellar defensive plays were turned in by almost every member of York's starting nine, especially Bammer "Upshaw" Cantwell who made some great plays at first, and Big "Gruber" Zak manning the hot corner.

The earlier game sof the series were higlighted by excellent pitching from Eric Foley and Kevin Horton. Foley captured games 1 and 3 by scores of 18-3 and 6-5, and Horton was the victor in Games 2 and 4 by scores of 11-1 and 8-5.

Bammer Cantwell met with the media while munching on some sweet potato frites at his favourite "bevvy" establishment and had these comments "In spite of the fact that my salad was too damn leafy, I was really proud of the effort tonight. The fact that Dan Fiorita drove in all the way from Kingston for this game brought tears to my eyes."Cantwell then went to practice some more of first base moves and ceded the microphone to third string leftfielder and part-time scorekeeper Paul Freeman who had these words"Great effort and a great series against a great team. A lot of good baseball and the Cardinals speed means they are always in every game. It was nice to beat them after losing to them last year."

"This series had so many great elements for us...from Eric's dominant pitching, to everyone pitching in offensively, to guys like Hawk and Spanky get meaningful innings in big games. Overall a great win for us and we will be ready for whomever comes our way next week! Good job, boys!
