Adien Frien Leads Sharks over Creekside
Playing without 4 of their regulars, Ponte Vedra showed the depth of their roster in defeating Creekside 48-36. Senior Aiden Friein, who had not scored a point all season for the Sharks, contributed 13 points to help the Sharks notch their 9th straight victory of the season. Junior Luke Pirris was the leading scorer for the Sharks with 14 points while Senior guard Alex Madson added nine.
The game was almost a carbon copy of the opening game played between these two squads exactly a year ago. The Sharks in 2019 jumped out to an early 13-0 lead over the Knights but won by only 2 points 40-38. In 2020 the Sharks raced out to yet another 13- point lead at 15-2 before the Knights could mount a comeback.

Creekside’s Hampton Riedl scored a basket just 30 seconds into the final quarter to tie up the game at 36-36. It would be Hampton’s 18th, and last points of the evening as Ponte Vedra held Creekside without a single field goal the final 7 and a half minutes of the game. The Sharks kept their poise and again it was this team’s 2020 trademark – DEFENSE – that spelled the difference for the victors.

It is doubtful if the Sharks would have copped their 9th straight if not for the performance of Frien. Limited in previous action, due to injuries and illness, to but 2 very short appearances in the team’s first 8 games, the Senior scored 1 more point in this game then he had scored in his entire career for the Sharks. Frien was a thorn in the side of the Knights as he came up with 5 steals in addition to his 13 points.

Steady Luke Pirris again led the Sharks in scoring with 14 points, 12 of those coming in the first half. Pirris was a pillar of strength on the boards with a game high 9 rebounds. Sophomore Nate Bunkosky was held to 4 points but committed nary a turnover from his point guard position.

The Sharks next opponent Monday should pose their biggest test of the young season as they will play Hawthorne in the opening round of the Fleming Island Tournament. The game will be contested at Ridgeview High School and the Sharks are hopeful that they will see the return to the hardwoods of JT Kelly, Rory Mayer, Jack Polian, Gus Jordheim, and Will Irwin against the defending state champs.
