Another disappointing effort by the team. We played really well the first 5 minutes and then allowed an uncontested shot from the point that was deflected for a goal. We came out of the first period down only 1-0 but down a forward for the first 10 minutes of the second period because of a head contact penalty. Playing with only eight forwards put extra pressure on our players to play more minutes and we gave up three goals during that ten minute span that took a 1-0 game and made it 4-0. In the locker room we talked about our poor defensive zone play and how we were allowing them to win all the 50/50 pucks and how we were allowing their point D to control the zone play by not putting any pressure on them. Three of their goals were scored by defensemen and two others were started by plays at the point. We were doing far too much running around in our zone and crashing down on our own net to be successful defensively. We challenged the players to play the third period with a better commitment to effort and defensive zone play. We did play a lot better in the third period and had more scoring chances. We even attempted 14 shots in the period which allowed us to put more pressure on the Comcast goaltender. Unfortunately it was a little too late to make a difference, but at least the boys played with some heart. We know we played poorly in the D zone and we know fundamentally what has to change to allow us to be more successful. We will talk about it and work on it and get better at it. Our first Elite league games are tomorrow and we will need to bring a much better commitment to our effort if we want to avoid more embarrassing losses. .
