We were in this game early and playing hard. Harple scored around the eight minute mark of the first period to give us a 1-0 lead and the boys were really into the action and pace of the game. Late in the first period we were about to go on a power play when we took a bad retaliation penalty. In that two minute span that we could have had a power play we gave up three quick goals to fall behind 3-1 and the team just never recovered from that. We had spurts in the game where we played well, but breakdowns in our Dzone coverage and poor play around both blue lines led to scoring chances that the Jr. Sabres put in the back of the net. The speed of the Sabres team was something we just couldn't match often enough. Even when we controlled loose pucks in the neutral zone we just couldn't get separation to create offense. I believe the boys learned a valuable lesson this weekend. They learned that to compete at this level you have to work hard every shift. You have to backcheck consistently every shift, and you have to play smart in the defensive zone. I've found in the past that after playing Elite league games, coming back to the AYHL feels like the game is moving slower and the players compete harder. I hope that is the case after our play in Buffalo this weekend. .
