We got off to a bit of a slow start, but started coming around near the middle of the first period. The Devils got on the board first with a puck that Cain mishandled and got loose in front for a goal. The game turned in our favor early in the second when our PK neutral zone forecheck caused a turnover that Kyle Fiore deposited in the back of the net for a short handed goal to tie the game. We scored the go ahead goal on a quick pass and shot with LeClair feeding Picard in front. LeClair scored in the final minute of the second to send us to the locker room up 3-1. The Devils started the third strong and scored the first goal off some sloppy play by us in front of our net to make it a one goal game. The game went back and forth over the next eight minutes with neither team having consistent scoring chances. With just a one goal lead we tried to focus on keeping pucks deep and making the Devils go 200 feet to get chances. The Devils were in our zone trying to put some pressure on when Cal LeClair blocked a shot from the point, picked up the loose puck in the neutral zone and beat the defender down the ice on the breakaway. LeClair waited for the goaltender to open his legs and slide the shot between his pads into the back of the net to give us the important two goal lead. Thirty one seconds later newcomer to the team Ryan McArthur ripped a slap shot from the top of the circle past the goaltender for his first goal and the nail in the coffin. I think the team learned a few things up in Buffalo last weekend. We knew we had to backcheck harder and more consistently. We knew we had to do a better job in our defensive zone and we knew we had to do a better job on the breakout to generate speed through the neutral zone. During the week we worked on those specific parts of our game in practice and did a nice job implementing them in this game. We still made our share of mistakes, and we still lost too many 50/50 pucks, but we did a much better job recovering from those mistakes than we did last week. We head to Pittsburgh next week for two Elite league games, and we hope to compete better and learn a few more things that will help us grow as a team. .
