Flyers Play Well but Drop Another OT Game 4-3

We came into this game with the feeling that we could change the results from the last MM game. We had a plan to limit their neutral zone attack and most of the game we implemented it well. Jumping out to a 2-0 lead after one period really gave us the feeling that this game would be different......then the referee decided to get involved.

With eight penalties on us and six on them, he turned a game with good pace, into a slog. At one point we had two guys in the box service ten minute misconducts plus another player serving a two minute penalty, and another player out for the game with an injury.

The entire pace of play changed and we found ourselves with the long change on two occasions and tired players on the ice making bad defensive decisions. The MM tied the game off of two shots from the slot, that never should have happened.

Between the second and third period I spoke with one of the linesman and told him to ask the ref to back off the ridiculous calls he was making because I didn't want to get suspended for our Sunday game due to the 15 penalty rule. Surprisingly, he called only four penalties in the third period, with just one against us.

The MM broke the tie, when we rushed up ice 3 on 2 and took a shot that missed wide and wrapped around the wall and out to the trailing MM players, who quickly turned the play into a 2 on 1 against us. We were slow on the backcheck and misplayed the 2 on 1 and just like that, our 3 on 2 turned into a goal for the MM. Poor decision making by our players on that play put us down 3-2.

With a minute and a half to play the MM took a penalty while on the Power Play to even the sides at 4 on 4. After a time-out to discuss our options and knowing we would go on the Power Play in ten seconds we put out the guys we hoped would get the goal to even the score. With about a minute to go we pulled the goalie and had a 6 on 4 advantage. The puck found its way to the point where Carter Dwyer fired a shot at the net that the goalie didn't see through the crowd and we tied the score.

Off the ensuing face-off Brandon Picard weaved his way in and almost ended the game. We finished the final few seconds with two more scoring opportunities but were turned away.

In the OT we held the puck in their zone for almost the first two minutes. Midway through the OT, Nick Parody rushed end-to-end with the puck but couldn't get off a shot. Unfortunately, this is when our play broke down and the game ended a few seconds later. Our defenseman at the blue line pinched and missed the puck and more importantly didn't take the body. Danny Hargadon was back covering for Parody and did a nice job staying between the 2 on 1 rush, but our backcheck was slow to respond and the MM scored a goal that we should have defended better.

The boys played well most of the game, but two odd man rush goals, and the mistakes that led to those odd man rushes cost us an opportunity to win a game against one of the top teams in the league. At this level it's typically the team that makes the fewest mistakes who wins, and we didn't do our part to win that battle.
