Slow Start, Second Half Surge Paces Sweep in Bracket PlayDay two at the 2006 Kirkwood Premier Invitational opened at the Governor Bacon complex against Maryland-based FC Frederick Premier. Commack had already locked up their semi-final position and the overall top position in their four team bracket, but the Maryland team was looking to sneak into the semi-finals with a win in this match. The weather could not have been more different from Saturday as the skies were clear and the temperatures would rise through the sixties into the mid-seventies during the course of the day's action.
The Blasters started evenly, but slower, than the previous day's pace, and that cost a goal in the early going. A foul in the third minute resulted in a free kick from the right side, about twenty yards out for FC Frederick. Despite a three-man wall, the perfectly placed direct kick picked the upper left corner over Sara's extended hand for a 1-0 score. Immediately obvious were the very long punts from the FC Frederick keeper which landed consistently between midfield and the Commack eighteen yard box. The result was that the forwards were consistently up the field and Commack's defense and midfield were critical in keeping the ball under pressure. Unfortunately, Tori was injured at the ten minute mark as she rolled her ankle on a well-fought ball near the right sideline which retired her for the tournament. Commack picked up the pace from here with building pressure and the team thought they equalized at the twenty-five minute mark on a play inside the box from Saulty to Katie for a goal, but a very late flag was raised by the assistant referee marking an offside. Just as with the second game the day before, the Blasters went to the half down 1-0. Six minutes into the second half, Alyssa scored from the right forward position into the upper left corner to make the score 1-1. In minute fourteen, Nicky's set piece from midfield was perfectly placed and was scored by Katie's flying header going from left-to-right for the 2-1 advantage. The defensive unit included Campy, Ashley, Alyssa, Jen M., LB, and Meghan at various points during the final twenty minutes to secure the win. Carly was extremely hard working on the attacking outside midfield and Gina was equally strong on the opposite side. Jen B. was active in both the midfield and striker positions. Meredith covered plenty of field on the outside flanks while Saulty ran down several balls but was left frustrated by the Maryland team's defense. Congratulations to Katie for receiving the MVP Award given by the coaches from FC Frederick Premier.
