Offensive Chances Left Uncoverted in Opening Round LossThe 2007 JAGS Invitational Tournament opened at the Bordentown Friendship Fields in New Jersey on Saturday, June 16th under high sunny skies with temperatures in the upper eighties. A scoreless contest for fifty-three minutes saw Rhode Island score two late goals to defeat the Blasters, 2-0.
The Blasters did play extremely well and certainly had enough good offensive chances to take the match. Ashley had the best opportunity when she dribbled around the Rays keeper in the first half's closing minute only to have her resulting shot go wide of the left post. Sara led the way in goal during the first half and Diane took over the keeper's spot in the second stanza. The second half was more of the same great action. Unfortunately, Brooke suffered a knee injury at the ten minute mark that retired her for the tournament. Ashley struck a wonderful shot from twenty yards out that hit the crossbar in the nineteenth minute as the Blasters continued to build momentum. Four minutes later, an unexpected turn of events as the Rhode Island offensive attack sent a crossing ball into the box, right-to-left. A one touch volley was placed towards the right side and despite the deflection by Diane, trickled over the goal line for a 1-0 score. At the twenty six minute mark, Katie tracked back on defense with a Rays striker and the resulting shot was a well placed left-to-right score into the right side netting for a 2-0 final score. Guest players Amanda Wisotzke and Nicole Renaldo added to the Blasters attack in this contest.
