Third Straight Solid First Half with Two Late Goals AllowedDay two of the 2007 JAGS Invitational Tournament opened with the Commack Blasters taking on the Morris United Mystics who played in Region One Premier for the Spring season.
Despite another excellent first half with great scoring chances for the home town girls, the game went to the halftime break at nil. There was little to complain about as the team was playing solid possession soccer throughout the half. The deadlock was broken exactly at the second half's midpoint as an excellent Morris cross from left-to-right somehow found a streaking outside midfielder who was well marked by Carly. That one touch play found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Commack countered with three outstanding opportunities. The first from Jen was a chance to body a ball into the net which just went wide. The second from Carly who made a terrific attempt at a diving header that was just slightly mistimed. Liz had her best chance of the tournament on a shot that was placed wide. With five minutes remaining, Commack gambled by bringing more players forward to get the equalizer. On a counter play by Morris, a one-on-one against a defending Katie resulted in a spinning ground-ball shot from about twenty-five yards out which appeared harmless at first. Diane seemed to have both hands on the ball along the ground, but an on-coming Morris player poked the ball from her grip for a second and game closing goal. The loss dropped our group play record to 0W-3L-0T in the Red Division with one goal-for and seven against. All seven goals were ironically scored in the second half of each game. Despite playing with a shorter roster, the girls did play well enough to win across the three matches and we will need to continue to work on our team conditioning and finishing efforts. Thanks to guest players Amanda Wisotzke, Alison Gronenthal, and Nicole Renaldo for joining us in this match.
