Team Reminded that 69:30 Is Not Seventy MinutesTemperatures rose into the middle eighties at the very dry and dusty parking lot at Muldoon Farms and when the team arrived for this second match, the Commack Blasters vowed to put up the same quality of soccer that we saw earlier in the day. The Freedom United from California were the opponents in match number two.
Again, the Blasters controlled the action and saw three balls cross through the six yard box in the opening twenty minutes. Midfielders Nicky, Katie Gradel, Carly, Gina, Meredith and Brooke did an excellent job controlling the tempo while forwards Ashley, Katie, and Kiersten tried to break the scoring drought. Defensively, we were strong again to the half in front of Steph in goal. Sara was between the pipes in the second half and the team again responded in the field by controlling the tempo. LB and Alyssa made some nice runs from the defensive end, while Jen was solidly controlling her side with a great combination of speed and footskills. Liz pushed into the midfield as the match went along as Commack was swarming the Freedom six yard box. With thirty seconds remaining in a match destined to be a draw, the only defensive lapse of the match left an open striker from twenty yards. Sara was caught half-way and despite an attempt to get back for the high arching ball, the shot found the far side of the net for an undeserved 1-0 loss. Overall the team played wonderfully well again and did not get the result that might have otherwise been deserved. Coaches attending this second match included the University of Delaware, Davidson, and several others who were also in attendance from our first match.
