Showcase Season Resumes in NEWSS Opening Round GameOur 2007 National Women's Elite Soccer Showcase kicked off with a match against the MAPLE (Massachusetts) Premier Soccer League's top team, the Aztec Premier 90. In a back and forth match with several lead changes, the Commack Blasters fell to the Aztecs, 3-2, in a natural grass game at Mitchel Field.
Commack had several great chances in the first half including Ashley's volley in the twenty-eighth minute that was an Aztec keeper save. Five minutes later, the deadlock was broken with Nicky scoring a left footed shot into the right side netting for a 1-0 halftime lead. Sara recorded the first half clean sheet with good defensive support. The second half played wide open and it favored the Aztecs as they scored in minute sixteen on a completed corner kick and in minute seventeen on a defensive split. The score was knotted at 2-2 as Liz scored from the right side forward position in the thirty-first minute, but that lead did not hold as the Aztecs countered with two minutes remaining on a low shot to the right post for a 3-2 final score. A huge list of coaches came to see this first match at Mitchel Field : Fairfield University, Central Connecticut College, Concordia College, Amherst College, Williams-Smith, University of Rhode Island, George Washington University, Hofstra University, St. John's University, Assumption College, Bryant University, and Boston College.
