Opening Minute Strike and Constant Pressure Yields WinMatch number two of the 2008 JAGS Invitational saw temperatures soar into the lower nineties as the Commack Blasters took the field against the Clifton Stallions. The Blasters saw this team about three years back in the Roxbury Tournament and the Stallions aggressive trap defensive was still in tact with almost a dozen offside violations called against a variety of Commack strikers.
If you were late to your seat in this match, you missed the scoring. Alyssa intercepted a ball at midfield, split the Stallions midfield and carried the ball all the way to Clifton's defensive end. Her low shot from left-to-right caught the inside of the right post for an opening and only goal of the match. Although that was the only scoring, Carly made a nicely aggressive play in the twenty-third minute as she made a nice sliding offensive play on a 50/50 ball with the Clifton keeper almost resulting in a goal. On the defensive end, Alyssa won the ball with Clifton in a 2-on-1 break to stall an opportunity to shoot against Stephanie. Second half action saw similar strong possession from Commack without any additional goals being scored. The clean sheet victory set the Blasters up for a showdown match with the Arsenal World Class Hawks on Sunday with a berth in the Championship Finals on the line. Coaches attending this match included Iona, SUNY/Purchase, Philadelphia and others.
