Park and Sheridan Selected to Dick Howser Trophy Watch List

    FORMER PLAYER TIM PARK
    04/24/08 5:00PM

DALLAS - William and Mary senior catcher Tim Park and junior first baseman Mike Sheridan have been selected to the 2008 Dick Howser Trophy Watch List by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The list is comprised of 50 candidates who will be considered for the national honor that recognizes the top player in collegiate baseball. W&M was one of just nine programs to have more than one player named to the list.

Park and Sheridan’s selections mark the second consecutive season in which W&M has had a player on the list, as Greg Sexton earned the honor in ’07.

Selected to the Preseason Brooks Wallace Award Watch List and the Johnny Bench Award Watch List earlier this year, Park leads the Colonial Athletic Association in batting average (.435) and ranks among the league’s top five in on-base percentage (.500), hits (70), doubles (17), slugging percentage (.720), runs scored (49), RBI (46) and total bases (116). He also entered the week ranked among the nation’s top 20 in hits (fourth), batting average (eighth), total bases (13) and doubles (19).

Park has registered 20 multi-hit games this season and driven in at least two runs on 14 occasions. Additionally, the Silver Spring, Md., native recently posted an 18-game hitting streak.

Baseball: Franceski moving back to the city
Former Gaithersburg, MC-Germantown pitcher picks GW
by James Peters | Staff Writer

Gaithersburg High and Montgomery College-Germantown grad Nick Franceski signed to play baseball at George Washington University last week. As a sophomore this spring at Germantown, Franceski posted a 9-4 record and a 2.14 earned-run average.

Gaithersburg native Nick Franceski began his high school baseball career at St. John’s High in Washington, D.C., six years ago. He will likely finish his college career in the nation’s capital, as well.

After helping lead Montgomery College-Germantown to NJCAA Division III World Series appearances the past two springs, Franceski recently decided to spend his final two seasons at George Washington University. He chose the Colonials over a handful of other schools, including Penn State.
‘‘I came down [for a visit] and I fell in love with it,” Franceski said. ‘‘It’s a great school and it’s a prestigious school for academics. If baseball doesn’t take me to the next step, I wanted to stay in the Washington Metropolitan area. I’ve already been accepted into the business school.”

Franceski, a 2008 Rawlings Gold Glove winner this past spring at Germantown, joins a pitching staff that struggled to a 6.48 team earned-run average and allowed opponents to bat .303 en route to records of 26-29 overall and 11-16 in the Atlantic 10 Conference last year. The team’s best pitcher winningest was Bobby Lucas (6-1), who had a 7.20 ERA in 50 innings.

‘‘I talked to the coach [Steve Mrowka]; he met me up there, and he’s bringing the program back,” Franceski said. ‘‘He’s putting more money into the program and they’re in the process of getting their own park. He brought in a lot of pitchers [last year] but nobody had been really consistent. If I can come in and prove myself, hopefully I’ll be a weekend starter.”

Franceski’s pitching has shown marked improvement in recent years. He was named a second team NJCAA Division III All-American after posting a 9-4 record and 2.14 earned run average in 75 1⁄3 innings as a sophomore. He posted four complete games and surrendered 23 earned runs to help guide the Gryphons to a 35-12 record. That performance came after an 8-2 mark as a freshman in 2007.

‘‘I think playing at Germantown helped me a lot,” Franceski said. ‘‘It helped me mature. I could have gone to a school down in Georgia [after high school]. I liked it a lot but I didn’t want to be that far away from my family. It was not something I wanted to do yet. I had a heck of a two years. It got me a lot of opportunities. I would definitely recommend junior college.”

Franceski, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander, arrived at Montgomery College two years ago after spending three years at St. John’s as a pitcher⁄designated hitter. He finished his career at Gaithersburg High, where he garnered second-team All-Gazette honors, going 6-3 with a 2.94 ERA and 46 strikeouts, also smacking three home runs with 19 runs batted in.

Franceski is currently pitching for the Gaithersburg Giants of the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League, where he had a compiled a 2-4 record with a 5.46 ERA through his July 3 start against the Maryland Orioles. The Giants had compiled a 10-10-1 record through the weekend.
