Dear Upland Pop Warner players and families: I am an alumnus of UPW (1971-76) and would like to announce to the Upland Pop Warner community a new book by my father, Ed Ulloa, who was the first coach of the Bandits (73-77, 2 conference championships) and later coached the Vikings and the Outlaws. Coach Ulloa began his coaching career like the thousands of fathers around youth sports today, by going to his son's practice and watching. In 1972, I was on the Upland Pop Warner Jr. Pee Wee Rams, and my dad, watching practice, noticed that the smaller kids often would stand and watch while the coaches worked with the starters. Offering to help and keep the smaller kids occupied, Dad was made an assistant coach in charge of these smaller younger kids. The next year brought the establishment of a new division for the smallest and youngest players, the mighty-mites, and Coach Ulloa was made the first head coach of the Bandits. Over the next four years, the Upland Bandits became a dynasty within the Mt. Baldy Conference, winning three conference championships and going undefeated twice. Moving up in divisions, Coach Ulloa coached teams in the Jr. Midget and Midget divisions to conference championships, bowl victories and national rankings, until, in 1978, Coach Ulloa was named head coach of the Freshman football team at Upland High School. More undefeated seasons and San Antonio League and Baseline league championships followed, at Upland, and then at Damien High School from 1984-1988. During his last undefeated season at Damien, Coach Ulloa was disheartened while beating an 0-10 Upland team, 53-0, to the extent that he returned to Upland as freshman coach to help right the program. In 1989, Coach Ulloa's Upland Freshman team, one year after going 0-10, were an undefeated 10-0 Baseline league champions. In 1990, Coach Ulloa moved to Orange County, and became head coach of the Irvine High School freshman team. Between 1990 and 1997, Coach Ulloa's Irvine teams won several Sea View and South Coast league championships. In 1997, Coach Ulloa's undefeated Irvine team shut out the three major parochial programs in Orange County (Mater Dei, Servite, and Santa Margarita). After seeking Coach Ulloa's team shut out the Mater Dei freshman team led by Matt Leinart, Mater Dei Head Coach Bruce Rollinson hired Coach Ulloa to coach his freshman program. The Mater Dei freshman program consists of two teams and over 110 players. Coach Ulloa ran the program from 1998-2001. In his last season, both teams went undefeated, making him 20-0 in his last year, and Trinity league champions. In the championship game against Santa Margarita, Coach Ulloa's Monarch shut out the Eagles and their quarterback, Mark Sanchez, 13-0. Coach Ulloa also was head varsity softball coach at Upland and Mater Dei, winning two CIF Division I championships, and making the finals three other times. He had a remarkable career. Over 30-odd years, his records were 218-40-4 in football, 249-71 in softball. The book "27: A Football Coach's Memoirs" recounts how a father visiting his son's practice at Upland High got drawn into the sport, and began a 30 year career that spanned from the Upland Mighty Mites to the High School fields of Orange County, coaching or defeating athletes like Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, and Mark Sanchez. For all you coaches starting your careers, "27: A Coach's Memoirs" is a book of what can be. It is available on Amazon.com at http://www.amazon.com/27-Football-Memoirs-Edward-Ulloa/dp/1606720031/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229033372&sr=1-2.
