HOBOKEN LITTLE LEAGUE FALL BASEBALL PROGRAM

The Hoboken Little League fall baseball program will be available to all returning/registered players who participated in the Minor and Major League programs (baseball aged 8 - 11 years old) during the spring season (2023).

Enrollment period to "sign up" for the fall baseball program: August 3rd - August 20th

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS (Deadline: August 20th):

1) Please complete the online form to enroll your child: https://forms.gle/uRbKd5GdcBkjLjLp7

2) Please also complete the following online enrollment link for the fall season on TeamSnap: hobokennj.gov/little-league-teamsnap

We will be using TeamSnap for league-wide and team management again this fall season. Everyone who will be participating in the fall baseball program needs to complete the online link AGAIN, regardless of completion in the spring/summer baseball and/or for other local sports. This process allows us to place everyone onto their respective rosters, update personal data, and launch a NEW season/teams on TeamSnap for the fall. You will gain access to your child's respective team on TeamSnap after being activated and rostered to the team (note that it will not show up automatically on your "app" after completing the enrollment and will not be released until after the enrollment period concludes).

3) If you are a registered/returning manager/coach from the HLL spring season (2023) and available/interested in volunteering during the fall baseball season, please complete the additional online form: https://forms.gle/kQMHjUuZCBeWgGSJA

GENERAL INFORMATION & FAQ:

Registration:

  • The fall baseball program is an extended part of the annual training available to those already registered within our local Little League charter
  • The fall program is an "extension" of the spring season (2023) and is only available to current returning/registered players from the spring season (2023) within our local Little League charter
  • No payment is required; the fall program is included in the spring season registration fees (2023)
  • The League will NOT require an additional registration with the City of Hoboken OR Blue Sombrero/Little League International at this time

Program Goals / Objectives:

  • The fall baseball program serves as an extension of the annual training available to those already registered within our local Little League charter during the spring (2023).
  • The program is intended to be highly instructional, less competitive (than the spring), and mainly FUN!
  • While an important goal of the program is to have fun and connect with peers within the local community, it will primarily provide players with an opportunity to further develop their skills, gain additional "reps", and mainly prepare for the upcoming spring season. Coaches will instruct, teach, model, encourage continued growth, and foster a fondness for baseball through a game setting.
  • The program will provide returning players in the Major League the chance to work with their current teammates/peers, further build camaraderie, strengthen various positions, and practice new/primary positions on the field without pressure. The key focus is NOT about "winning" during the fall season, instead, is all about developing and growing.

  • The program will also offer eligible players from the Minor League divisions who are contemplating "moving up" to the next level/division in the upcoming spring season (2024) the opportunity to prepare and get their "feet wet" for the mandatory spring tryouts, and in that case, "sample" the more advanced level of play. These players will have the chance to experience playing baseball at the next level in a less intense learning atmosphere to help prepare and determine the right fit for the spring.

Overall Schedule / Plans:

  • The Program will run for 7 weeks (one week of scrimmage/practice + 6 weeks of games)
  • The program will start on Tuesday, September 12th and conclude on/around Thursday, October 26th
  • Weeknights only; no weekends
  • Games will take place in the evenings on Tuesdays - Thursdays (No Fridays) starting on Tuesday, September 19th
  • All teams will play once a week
  • No regular practices will be held with the exception of the first week (September 12th - 14th)
  • Optional pregame warmup in the cages an hour before each game (TBD)
  • All practices/warm-up sessions during the season will be held at the coach's discretion and may not run regularly (TBD)
  • No playoffs/championship games
  • In the case of inclement weather, the league will notify all managers/coaches and/or families whenever possible
  • Make-up games are not guaranteed and will serve on a TBD basis (mainly dependent on timing/field availability)

What to Bring Equipment:

  • Baseball gloves
  • Baseball bat
  • Personal helmet (helmets will be available to borrow as needed)
  • Catchers are encouraged to bring their own gear (a spare set will be provided on-site to borrow as needed)

What to Wear (Uniforms):

  • Players will not receive new uniforms
  • All players should wear a favorite baseball cap as well as comfortable, athletic clothing including a top/shirt in the assigned team color and baseball pants/sweatpants; NO shorts or skirts permitted
  • Molded / turf cleats are acceptable; NO metal cleats are permitted
  • All pitchers are required to wear a pitching/heart guard - NO exceptions
  • All male catchers are required to wear an athletic cup - NO exceptions (all male players should have one available at all times to be worn as needed)
  • All players are highly encouraged to wear a pitching/heart guard for safety reasons and should prepare for the ever-changing game scenarios; you never know when a player will be placed on the mound

Program Placement & Divisions:

*Registered players with a baseball age of 8 - 11 during the past spring season (2023) who played within the Minor Juniors, Minor League, and Major League divisions are eligible to participate.

  • The program has been divided into two separate divisions for the fall season: Minor League (8's)and Major League (9's- 11's)
  • Baseball ages for the fall program are based on the prior spring season (2023); no exceptions
  • Coach Pitch players (baseball aged "7" during the spring season - 2023) are NOT eligible to participate in the fall season; no exceptions

  • Players that recently graduated from the Major League program or from Minor League with a baseball age of 12 this past spring season 2023 (the former "12's"/rising "13's") are NOT eligible to participate; Players with a birth date that falls between 9/1/10 - 8/31/11 are no longer eligible to play in the Major League division/fall program.

  • When applicable, all efforts will be made to pair managers/coaches/players with their former/returning players from the spring season (2023). However, there are NO guarantees as it will be based on enrollment data/numbers, team composition, as well as player skills/experience and positional needs across teams.

  • If your child is "moving up" to the next division, he/she will NOT automatically be paired with former teammates during the fall season. For example, if he/she played in the Minor League in the spring (2023) and will be moving into the Major League for the fall season, he/she will NOT automatically be placed with former teammates from the Minor League and may be spread out across the Major League teams in the fall; likewise for Minor Junior players that move into the Minor League in the fall.

  • Siblings will always receive priority to be paired with each other on teams whenever possible/eligible to participate in the same division

Team placement/rosters, scheduling, and additional information will be provided in late August/early September. Families will also be granted access to their respective teams on the TeamSnap "app" at that time. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please reach out to CARA HILTON at hobokenlittleleaguebaseball@gmail.com

Note that the team formation process is a top-down approach and often takes extensive time: rosters are typically published after the draft/team formation process has concluded (usually in late March/early April) in order as follows: (Majors ➡️ Minors ➡️ Minor Juniors ➡️ Coach Pitch)

VOLUNTEERING:

We often need volunteers to fulfill vacancies and assist with various coaching roles, especially within the following programs: Coach Pitch, Minor Juniors, Minor League, and Junior/Senior divisions.

NOTE: Signing up to volunteer DOES NOT automatically guarantee a coaching position; an administrator or team manager will reach out to share more information regarding available positions in late March/early April if applicable (TBD)

2021 MAJOR ALL STARS

HOBOKEN LITTLE LEAGUE HISTORY

June 9, 2022

In 1939 Little League Baseball is founded by Carl Stotz, who enlists help from others in the community. Mr. Stotz, George Bebble and Bert Bebble are the first three managers. ... A $30 donation is sufficient to purchase uniforms for each of the first three teams, named after their sponsors: Lycoming Dairy, Lundy Lumber, and Jumbo Pretzel. … The first season is played in a vacant lot near the outfield fence of Bowman Field.

In 1951, just 12 years later Hoboken, N.J. is granted a charter in Little League Baseball. The league name was Hoboken Recreation League; our first President was Thomas A. Gallo, Vice-President Jerry Malloy, and Treasurer Tony Calland. The league consisted of four teams, Unico Club managed by Dick Canzano, Recreation managed by James Clyons, J.J. Pascale managed by Tony Calland, and City Democrates managed by Sal Salenga. They played a 12 game Season.

In 1952 we were charted as the Hoboken Little League, but we only charted 3 teams, the Gallo Club, Unico Club, and City Club.

In 1953, we charted two leagues, the Hoboken Recreation Little League and the Hoboken Recreation League North, with John J. Grogan serving as President of the Leagues, and Thomas A. Gallo serving as Commissioner. The HRLL had four teams, Colts, Bears, Cubs, Yanks; the North Charter also had four teams, Yankees, Giants, Dodgers, Indians.

In 1954, with John Mellow as President, the League charted a South League and a North League, the North consisted of the Nelson’s, Gallo’s, Kiwanis, and Casalino’s, while the South, consisted of the Giants, Yanks, Dodgers, and Red Sox.

In 1955, the South had the Nelson’s, Gallo’s, Kiwanis, and Casalino’s, while the North Had Pascale’s’ Silon’s, Borelli’s, and Unico.

In 1956, the league is realigned and the North has the Unico, Kiwanis, Lions, and Silon’s, while the South has the Casalino’s, Borelli’s, Nelson’s, and Gallo’s.

In 1957 the South grows to 6 teams, the Casalino’s, Elks, Borelli’s, Gallo’s, Nelson’s, and Muzzi’s, while the North stays the same with four teams.

In 1958, with Salvatore D’Amelio as President the North adds two teams, P.A.L. and Smith & Owens, making six teams in each charter.

In 1959, the South now consists of four teams, Casalino’s, Gallo’s, Nelson’s, and Troy’s, with the north having six teams, the P.A.L., smith & Owens, Silons, V>F>W., I.L.A. and Muzzi.

In 1960 the North drops the Silons, and adds the C.W.V. and the South stays the same.

In 1962 Charles C. Casalino is President both leagues stay the same, but the South has an 18 game schedule while the North has a 15 game schedule and all rosters have 15 players.

In 1963 the North drops Muzzi and Smith & Owens, but adds the Nekoboh’s, and Local 560, while the South stays the same.

In 1964 both the North and South have 6 teams; records no longer identify the teams in the league.

League Presidents: 1951-Thomas a. Gallo, 1953- John J. Grogan, 1954-John Mellow, 1958-Salvatore D’Amelio, 1962-Charles C. Casalino, 1980 James J. Farina 1995 Tim Calligy, 2001 Anthony Cardino, 2006 James J. Farina, was again named as League President and is still serving the Hoboken Little League.
In 1972 Hoboken native Maria Pepe, at age 12, pitched three Little League games for the Young Democrats team. This was the same team which her friends from the neighborhood had joined, so she joined as well, after having been invited to play by Little League coach Jim Farina. Pepe was asked to leave the team after the Little League "threatened to revoke Hoboken's charter. The refusal to allow Pepe to play attracted the attention of the National Organization for Women (NOW).  A court case began on Pepe's behalf, which was supported by NOW. Ultimately the New Jersey Superior Court decided that Little League must allow girls to try out. As a result, the Little League organization began a program specifically for girls starting in 1974.
Pepe became a minor celebrity and drew media attention to various women's causes at the time. The New York Yankees made her an honorary "Yankee for a day".
In 2004 she lent her glove and hat to the Peter J. McGovern Little League Museum in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. On August 20, 2004 she was also honored by Little League Baseball by being asked to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the 2004 Little League World Series in South Williamsport.
In 2009 Little International granted the Hoboken little league North and South Charters permission to merge. And play under one Charter.

IN 2019 HOBOKEN LITTLE LEAGUE WENT FROM 12 TEAMS TO TEN TEAMS, ELKS, POLICE DEPT. FIRE DEPT, YOUNG DEMS, STANS,CASSESA'S, RUSSO'S, MAS DEMOLITION, CHIRICHELLA BOYS, MARIO'S PIZZA
