WHAT IS BALL HOCKEY?

Ball hockey is a sport where players run around on foot (not skates) and play with a ball (not puck).  There are a lot of similiarites between ball hockey and ice hockey but there are definitely differences.

Other names for ball hockey are dek hockey, street hockey or floor hockey.

Rules such as "icing", "offsides", "high-sticking", "slashing" etc still apply in ball hockey.  The game is played with 5 players and a goalie.  Positions are left wing, center, right wing, left defense, right defense and goalie.  There are penalties which will have your team without a player for a 1 minute penalty (can be 3 minute majors or ejections depending on severity).

Hockey is a team sport.  You are looking to get the ball to a player that is as open as possible (even if that is you), so that your team has the best possible chance to put the ball in the net.  But if there are no "open" players or a shot towards the net, moving your body around the rink with the ball is necessary to actually get it to another player, go in towards the net yourself or shoot the ball from where you stand.  Hockey defense is also the job of all players on the rink, not just the 2 defenders and goalie.  All players need to come back into their defensive zone to help keep the ball out of their own net.

Hope this helps a bit to explain.
