Kelly Goobers 2019 Season Preview

The Kelly Goobers are entering their 8th season together and are still chasing that elusive first championship.  Over the 8 years we have had 16 players play at least one full season in the green and white and this year that number will rise to 18 with the addition of two new players.   After a promising 2018 in which the Kelly Goobers finished 2nd place in the season they would once again play the bridesmaid in the final watching the Muffin Men celebrate victory in a 3 games to 1 series loss.

We already know all about last year so it’s time to move onto the 2019 Kelly Goobers season preview.  I mentioned above the addition of two new players this year, unfortunately with that we also had to lose two players.  Ty Morrison (Ty Guy) and Simon Lahay (Si Guy) had to depart this year for work related issues but we hope one day they will be back!  Let’s take a look at their careers thus far:

#13 – Ty Morrison – Left Fielder – Not Swedish – Raptors Tat Enthusiast – Mr. Try Hard

Ty was an unknown joining this team back in 2012 having been brought out by JP Anderson.  No one expected a slender blonde haired kid who couldn’t stop smiling that’s for sure.  Ty instantly became a favorite on the team with his upbeat attitude and try hard mentality.  Ty in his first season would join the 40 Hit Club and it looked like he was destined to become a top hitter on this team for years to come.  Unfortunately this was his only year reaching the 40 Hit Club.  His hitting would stay pretty consistent, after a sophomore slump where he hit just 0.470 Ty would whip up 3 straight solid seasons from 2014-2016 batting 0.552 during that time.  It seems though something happened in 2017 that changed Ty’s sweet swing.  From 2017-2018 Ty would bat 0.341.  The good thing about Ty is even when his plate struggles occur he can still prove effective in the field or on the base path.  His arm could rival some of the best in the league (if only he hit the target ;P) so maybe this year off will allow him to get back to his old self.

#7 – Simon Lahay – Right Fielder – Silent but Deadly – What’s Oppo? – Last Guy to Leave

Simon and I played hardball together back in the day and he was always a solid singles hitter who would use his speed to his advantage both on the bases and in the outfield.  Nothing much changed when he joined the Kelly Goobers back in 2015.  His first taste of action was less than spectacular as he hit just 0.333 in 11 games.  His true rookie season would come the next year when he hit 0.554 including 19 extra base hits in 28 games.  Simon’s career was unfortunately a short one as he was cut down by injuries and work.  His career batting average of 0.542 ranks him 5th all-time and he is one of 3 players to have recorded 5 hits in a single game.  A Bronze Slugger and 2 time Gold Glove Outfield winner, Simon will surely be missed on this team.  Best of luck to him in the future!

Now we move on to the active roster for the 2019 Kelly Goobers.

Starting at 1st base we have #27 Brian “Bobo” Robbie who is coming off a monstrous year in which he hit 0.625 and took home the Silver Slugger Award.  Bobo really perfected his oppo swing last year and with a new crop of teams entering the league Bobo will surely feast on the right fielder.

Slotted in at 2nd base we #3 Brian “Fucking” Fraser who is coming off a career worst for season batting where he hit just 0.382.  Fraser would have a solid playoffs batting 0.519 along with a 0.600 OBP.  His career batting average sits at 0.496 which has got to be disappointing for the veteran.  Fraser is determined to have a bounce back year and it would be nice to see him as a top 5 hitter on this team.

New comer #13 Shaun “Ringer” Andrade gets tasked with being the team’s starting SS to open the year, but will also split duties on the mound.  Like many newbies that sub in before joining the active roster his stats were underwhelming.  Batting just 0.455 in his 4 games he played Shaun will be looking to breakout in his rookie campaign and he even predicted a pretty hefty batting average for himself so no pressure :P

At the hot corner we have #39 Ariah “Ari Guy!” Tell who is one of the hardest working players on the team.  Ariah brings to the table 5 tools and when 100% healthy can be one of the best players on the field.  Taking home the MVP and the Bronze Slugger last year shows just how important he is to this team.  When he hits at the top of the order, a rally begins.

Moving back out to Left Field we have #42 JP “Jay” Anderson.  Growing up as an all-star outfielder JP made the switch to the infield a few years back when the Kelly Goobers infield pool drew thin.  He is now back in his rightful place, granted it’s not in the middle outfield positions but with the talent on the grass I’m sure he won’t have any issues playing the left side.  JP is one of the most consistent hitters on the team and every year you can expect somewhere between a 0.560 – 0.600 batting average.  I don’t see this season being any different but I still feel he has the swing to be a 0.600+ hitter on this team.  Let’s see if 2019 is his year to do it!

#19 Adam “Swazzo” Sawoszczuk has been the starting Left Center Fielder on this team since day 1.  Winning Gold Gloves for 6 straight years before last year’s vacation shortened season.  If I was Dr. Evil, Adam would be my #2.  Having a career batting average that is leading the #3 hitter by almost 50 points but still trailing the #1 by almost 100 points, Adam sits in a lonely spot where he is relied upon to continue to put up 0.600avg years but deal with the fact he won’t see many Silver Sluggers.  Keep doing what you do Adam! You deserve a place in the Wiserhood.

In Right Center Field we have #24 Kyle “Big KG” Gerrard who has been, in NBA Jam terms - “On Fire!” batting 0.574avg with 112 Hits over the past two years.  The hits totals are the most for a player during the last two years.  Kyle has always been a good hitter since his debut in 2014 but I still feel he has an extra gear he just hasn’t reached.  The power is starting to show itself after year 1 where Kyle hit 8 home runs he would only muster 7 from 2015-2017.  In 2018 Kyle would launch 7 balls for home runs and looks like he is finally becoming that dual threat at the plate of Contact and Power.

Right Field will be a rotating position for most of the year but our day 1 starter will be #9 Rob “Cabo Robo” Ryan.  One of the fan favorites on the club, Rob brings to the table a big heart but sometimes his play doesn’t meet his expectations.  His last two years have been pretty rough batting just 0.372avg considering he was hitting 0.435 before this we know he has more to offer.  Talks of him hitting the gym in the offseason are good signs that Rob is due for a breakout year.  Could be a nice sleeper in the fantasy pool!

On the hill to start the season will be #11 Ryan “10 Pack” Swire.   His pitching stats maybe aren’t the best but last year was his best year on the mound.   I believe with the split duties this year it will keep him fresh and should allow him to get some work in at 1B and 3B.  His batting has slipped in the past 3 years.  After batting 0.563 from 2012-2015 and solidifying himself as the 3rd best batter on the team during those years, Swire has dropped his average batting just 0.507 from 2016-2018.  I have no doubts he can get back to his old self as his swing is very simple and he just needs to find the holes to succeed.

Behind the dish will be #54 Franny “Fran Van” Pisani and there probably isn’t another player who has as much fun as this guy.   Having the career worst batting average amongst active players (0.402) will never take a smile away from his face.  When Franny steps in the box everyone pays attention as there is a chance we can witness something special.  The “Franny Special” is a swinging bunt that somehow always catches the defense off guard and allows for a hilarious sprint to first for our buddy.  The fact he has a 0.520 career season OBP% shows he still finds a way to get on base.

Now we get to the Bench Mob!.....We don’t really call ourselves that but I feel this team has always been at its best when everyone on the team is performing.

The 2nd newcomer to the team is #7 Dave “It’s My First Day” Macedo.  Not much is known of Dave’s softball skills but I know he is work horse and will do anything to make himself better.  Dave will be used all over the field as we try and figure out where he fits in best and will start at the bottom of the order.  We all know if the bottom of the order is working than the other team is in trouble.

Speaking of the bottom of the order #84 Jon “Boods” Boodhoo is a huge spark plug for this team.  Now that he is back at his home park of Maxward where Jon once launched, and I say launched two balls over the center field fence.  Will he get back to that power bat at the bottom of the order that let defenses know…..”Don’t come in on me bud.”  It has been tough sledding for the Brown Bomber in recent years batting just 0.376 since 2014.  I’d like to track his splits this year between the diamonds but I feel a bounce back is coming in 2019.

Write-in by Brian Robbie for the Jack of All Trades #26 Bobby "Chappy" Chapman.  Bobby is coming off an injury plagued season that saw him only play 4 regular season games last year. No more hardball for you! Bobby will be chomping at the bit to replicate his 2017 season in which he put up some monster numbers, including hitting 8 HR and 50 RBI to go along with a 0.716avg.  Bobby is the heart and soul of the Goobers franchise and he is the reason why ball is so much fun.  Bobby has a laser focus on bringing the Silver Slugger Award back onto his mantle.  But most of all he wants to bring home the teams first ever MMSPL Championship in 2019.

Last but not least we have #29 Mike “Dan Varino,  Vinblairmo,  Inferno,  Vierno…etc” Vieira.  Bet few knew his actual last name.  Vierno is Mr. I Got This.  In terms of what he can do in his mind, his talents are endless.  But we love him for this and he does bring a solid bat to the table.  His defense has been suspect at times but has shown flashes of being a solid 5 tool player all over the field.  The weight vest has paid off and I feel this will be the year he finally parks one over the fence…in fair territory.   He has fallen off the batting average leaders in recent years, once a top 5 hitter on the team he now ranks 9th on the club in batting.  I don’t have any fears of him not being a top hitter in 2019 and I could even see him flirting with the top 5 ranks this year.

Below are my predictions for the 2019 season:
