Championship Bid Comes Up Short For The A's The Kewaskum A’s 2008 season came to a close on Saturday after dropping a tough 1-0 loss at the hands of the Brownsville 49ers. It was a third time in four chances the A’s fell to Brownsville, with this game deciding who would represent the Northern division in the Grand Championships. Mitch Huffman and Tyler Witkowski matched each other pitch-for-pitch for nearly eight innings as neither team really got much of any offense going on this day.
The A’s wasted a golden opportunity to get on the board in the third. With one out, Jim Ziegler and Jake Panzer hit singles to put two runners on for the top of the order. A ground out by Jon Olla moved the runners to second and third for Ty Schill with two outs. After working the count to 2-2, Schill took one off his foot to load the bases. Austin Sarauer came up next, but Witkowski induced a groundball to first to end the inning.
Huffman kept the Brownsville hitters guessing all day and didn’t give up his first hit until the fifth inning. Brownsville led off with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second in that inning. A sac-fly for the first out of the inning left runners on the corners with one out for Brownsville. Huffman responded by getting a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. Austin Sarauer led off the top of the sixth with a double to right, a ball that might have carried out on another day, putting the A’s in their best position to score all day. A sac bunt popped up back to the pitcher resulted in the first out of the inning. A groundball and a flyout to center though ended another chance for the A’s to break the scoreless tie. Brownsville put a runner on second with one out in the bottom half of the sixth, but Huffman struck out the number three and four hitters to end the inning.
With the score tied at zero in the eighth, Jon Olla reached via an error to start the inning. Ty Schill dropped down a sac bunt moving Olla to second and setting the table for Austin Sarauer. After the first two pitches were balls though, the 49ers wisely decided to intentionally walk Austin putting two runners on for the A’s. The A’s just couldn’t get the hit they needed though as the next two batters recorded outs to end the inning.
Brownsville led off the eighth with a single back up the box and a sac bunt put the runner at second with one down. A groundball to second moved the runner over to third with two outs. The next batter punched one into right field scoring the runner from third giving the 49ers a 1-0 lead. It was all they would need as the A’s went down quietly in the ninth in dropping a heartbreaker 1-0 to the 49ers. Brownsville advances on to play in the Grand Championships against Clyman next weekend, while the A’s season comes to a close at 34-12. The A’s would like to thank all their fans for their support this year and look forward to building on one of the best years in team history.

A's Stay Alive in Playoffs, Top Oakfield 8-4 Facing elimination for the second straight game in the Rock River playoffs, the Kewaskum A’s delivered with an 8-4 victory over Oakfield on Saturday. The A’s will take on Brownsville next weekend in a game that will send the winner to the Rock River Grand Championships. (Brownsville defeated Oakfield on Sunday 3-2, thus eliminating Oakfield from the playoffs.) Oakfield jumped out to an early 2-0 in the first with a two-run home run off the bat of Scott Stettbacher. It was Stettbacher who had the decisive two-run home run in last week’s first round contest as well.
The A’s responded back with a big five run second inning, with all of the damage coming with two outs. Jason Strobel reached on an error to start the inning, but the next two batters made outs bringing up Adam Sarauer. Sarauer kept the inning alive with a single to right bringing Jim Ziegler to the plate. Ziegler ripped the first pitch to left, just clearing the wall, for a three-run home run to put the A’s up 3-2. Jake Panzer followed with a single down the leftfield line setting the table for Jon Olla. Olla responded by belting a two-run home run to left and giving the A’s a 5-2 lead. Kewaskum tacked on another run in the third on a Nick Whitty RBI single. The A’s used four consecutive singles in this inning by Strobel, Dan Shea, Whitty and Adam Sarauer. Oakfield eluded further damage when starting pitcher Chris Morgan got Ziegler to hit into a double play with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Oakfield tacked a single run in the seventh, but the A’s responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. The A’s took advantage of walks to Olla and Austin Sarauer in the inning as both runners scored on a single by Strobel. This was all starting pitcher Mitch Huffman would need for run support on this day. After the home run in the first, Huffman settled in and didn’t allow another run until the seventh inning. He worked the first seven innings to pick up his 10th win of the year. Ziegler threw the final two innings in relief of Huffman. The win puts the A’s one game away from claiming a spot in the Rock River Grand Championships. Kewaskum will travel to Brownsville most likely on Saturday at 1:30pm to take on the 49ers in the Northern Division Championship game. The A’s were swept by Brownsville in Rock River league play this season, but did upend the 49ers in the Plymouth Tourney Championship game. If the first three games this season were any indication, this might be another nail-biter of a game.

A's One-And-Done in Nite League Playoffs, Fall to Watertown The Kewaskum A’s dropped a 10-5 Tri-County Nite League playoff game to Watertown on Monday night in Brownsville. The loss eliminates the A’s from the six-team single elimination Nite League playoffs. Watertown manufactured a single run in the third to jump out to a 1-0 lead. That lead was short-lived though as Jim Ziegler led off the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to knot the score at one. The A’s took the lead in the same inning on a Ty Schill RBI single to score Jon Olla putting the A’s up 2-1 after three innings of play.
Watertown regained the lead in the top half of the fourth scoring two runs on a single that snuck between short and third. The A’s answered back in bottom half of the inning again. Nick Whitty walked to leadoff the inning and scored on Dan Shea’s RBI double to rightcenter. The A’s took the lead back later in the inning on a Jake Panzer two-out RBI single, making it 4-3 Kewaskum after four. The A’s were again unable to keep Watertown off the board as they tied it again in the top half of the fifth. A leadoff single eventually turned into a run when a two-out error allowed for the runner to score.
Kewaskum regained the lead in the 6th inning on a Ziegler RBI single. Adam Sarauer led off the inning with a single up the middle to get things started. Pinch runner Jason Strobel advanced to second on an attempted pickoff by the pitcher and then to third on a Matt Meisenheimer sac bunt. Strobel would later score on Ziegler’s single that put Kewaskum up 5-4 heading into the seventh. Watertown would not stay down on this day though, as a two-out walk kept their inning alive. The next batter ripped a double to the gap in right to tie the game again. The A’s tried to respond back in the bottom of the seventh as Austin Sarauer led off with a ground-rule double. Unfortunately for the A’s, Sarauer would have likely legged out a triple if not for the ball bouncing over the fence on a hop. As it would turn out, Sarauer would end up stranded on third and the game remained tied.
The A’s looked to get the game to the bottom of the ninth, but Watertown would have other plans on this night. A double to lead off the inning and a sac bunt put the go-ahead run on third with one out. The next batter worked the count full and fouled off a number of pitches in drawing the walk to put runners on the corners. With the middle of the infield at double play depth, a slow roller to short knocked in the go-ahead run and put runners on first and second. The next batter ripped a basehit to right and there looked as if there might have been a play at the plate, but a nasty hop over the rightfielder’s head allowed both runners to score and the batter to leg out a triple. When it was all said and done, Watertown had put up 5 runs in the inning. It was all they would need in winning by a final of 10-5. Jake Lathers tossed the first 6 2/3 innings giving up 5 runs (3 earned) to go along with 9 hits and 7 strikeouts. He was relieved by Cory Tjader, who worked the final 2 1/3 innings in picking up his first loss of the year. The A’s return to action on Saturday hosting Oakfield in a Rock River playoff game. It is a must-win game for the A’s, as a loss will end their season. First pitch is set for 1:30pm in Kewaskum.

Home Runs Lift A's Past Slinger in Elimination Game The Kewaskum A’s staved-off elimination on Sunday in the Rock River league playoffs with a 10-5 win over the Slinger Stingers. The win keeps the A’s alive to likely host Oakfield on Saturday, August 23rd at 1:30pm. The A’s jumped out in front early on Sunday. Jon Olla led off the game with a double, advanced to third on a sac bunt by Ty Schill and scored on a groundout by Austin Sarauer. Slinger jumped on top in the second putting up three runs in the inning. Two singles, a walk and a Kewaskum error led to the scoring.
Kewaskum cut the lead to one in the fourth, as they loaded the bases with nobody out. A RBI fielder’s choice by Jim Ziegler led to the only run the A’s would score in the inning. Slinger answered back with another single run in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 4-2. The A’s tied the score in the top of the fifth as Austin Sarauer and Dan Shea hit singles to put two runners on. An error by the third basemen allowed for the two runners to move up and Nick Whitty took advantage of the miscue as he ripped a 2 RBI single to left to tie the score at four.
The score remained tied until the seventh. With two outs and nobody on, Whitty worked the count full and eventually drew a walk setting the stage for Adam Sarauer. Adam belted the 1-0 pitch out of the park giving the A’s the lead at 6-4. Slinger led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to cut the A’s lead to one. Then with one out and a runner on first, a tailor-made double play ball was booted to extend the inning for the Stingers. Starting and winning pitcher Mitch Huffman didn’t let it affect him as he got the next batter to hit into a double play to end the threat.
The A’s added two more to the scoreboard in the eighth. With one out in the inning, Schill dropped a single into left, and Austin Sarauer followed with a home run to right to put the A’s up 8-5. Nick Whitty added a solo home run in the ninth, and the A’s tacked on one more insurance run on a Schill RBI fielder’s choice. Huffman closed the door in the ninth as he went the distance in picking up the victory for the A’s. The A’s play again on Monday night as they travel to Brownsville to take on Watertown in a Tri-County Nite League 1st round playoff game. Game time is 7:30pm.
