Competition Penalties
Penalty judges may examine a cast and/or brace in order to ensure it is legal for the participant to wear while participating.
It will be the coaches’ responsibilities to know the NFHS Spirit Rules.
The penalty judges’ interpretations and rulings are final.
Major Penalty – 5 points
1. Any violation of the current NFHS Spirit Rules Book.
Interpretations:
Hair: Rule 2-2-3 states that hair must be worn in a manner to minimize risk to the participant, as follows: Hair must be secured away from the face and shoulders and may not rest on the shoulders of participants or obstruct the participant’s view at
anytime. Short hair that can only be worn half up must not have
sides resting on face. Accordingly all hair above the ear area must
be pulled up and away.
Minor Penalty – 2.5 points
1. Any violation of the OCYCA rules.
2. Any violation of the rules listed below:
- Tumbling or stunting off the mat. Stepping off is legal if it is before or after the tumbling rotation or stunt has been completed. Falling off the mat after tumbling or stunting is illegal.
- Exceeding time limit. Time will begin on the start of the first word or beat of music and will end on the last word, beat of music or motion. The timer will allow a 5 second grace period.
- Each fall where the flyer’s trunk which begins at buddocks (excluding legs and arms) and/or head strikes the mat.
- Prone landings.
- Each tumbling skill where the cheerleader strikes their head, neck or face against the mat.
- Each time a tumbler kicks, strikes or tumbles into another cheerleader.
