DULUTH -- Members of the Duluth Padres Baseball Club volunteered their time for two hours to help the Superior Hiking Trail Association with a trail maintenance project near Spirit Mountain in Duluth. The crew worked along the spur trail to the Spirit Mountain campground and the main trail between the spur trail and the junction with Skline Parkway near N 99th Ave W.

Baseball Team Pitches In For Trail Maintenance

June 18, 2008
DULUTH -- The Proctor Padres Baseball Club assisted Superior Hiking Trail Association volunteers with trail maintenance near Skyline Parkway and 27th Ave. West in Duluth on Wed., June 18, 2008. The crew were constructing wooden planks over a muddy stretch of the trail. The team carried lumber and tools and helped in the construction and placement of the boardwalks.

“I am very appreciative of the Superior Hiking Trail volunteers for allowing us to help out and of the players’ willingness to do some community service projects,” said the team’s manager Anthony Bush. “I am especially grateful for the efforts of (team community service coordinators) Bob Baxton and Chrissy Squier for setting it up.”

The project took about two hours to complete.

The project was a part of a series of community service activities the Padres are providing as a part of fund raising efforts. The players are sponsored by individual contributions based on hours of community service. All money raised is used for expenses related to running an amateur baseball club: uniforms, equipment, and umpire fees. Fund raising cuts down on the amount the players have to pay to play.

The Proctor Padres Baseball Club was established in 2007 to allow baseball players from Proctor and the surrounding area an opportunity to continue playing the national pastime, to provide a summer hometown baseball experience for players from Proctor and the surrounding area who are currently playing baseball in college, and to promote amateur baseball in the Western Lake Superior region. The Padres compete in the Upper 13 League of the Wisconsin Baseball Association.
