SUS Tournament Rules and Tie Breakers

Games will be four 8 minutes quarters with a running clock.

 

  1. The clock will stop on shooting fouls. It will restart when the referee hands the ball to the shooter for the first shot of a one-and-one and on the second shot of a two-shot foul.
  2. In the first and third quarters, the clock will stop on all whistles, when the clock reaches 10 seconds.
  3. In the second and fourth quarters, the clock will stop on all whistles, when the clock reaches 2 minutes.

 

Teams will be allowed 4 time-outs. (2) 30-second timeouts and (2) full timeouts. Timeouts carry over.

 

PRESS RULE:

 

For 4th and 5th Grade girls and boys -- "NO PRESS" rule will be in effect whenever a

team is winning by 10 points or more. The team with the lead must set their defense inside the 3-point line.

 

For 6th and 7th Grade girls and boys -- "NO PRESS" rule will be in effect whenever a

team is winning by 15 points or more. The team with the lead must set their defense

inside the 3-point line.

 

For 8th Grade girls and boys -- If a team is winning by 20 points or more, the

team with the lead must set their defense behind the half court line.

 

If over time is needed it will be for 2 minutes per period. 

Please be fair to all of your players and use the CYO guidelines for playing time. 

The top two teams in each bracket will advance to the championship game.

 

 

 Bracket Play:

 

3-team bracket will play round robin.  After each team has played 2 games the teams will be seeded based on their record.  The 2nd and 3rd seed will play, with the winner facing the #1 seed for the Championship. 

 

4 and 5 team brackets will play round robin, then top two teams will advance to the championship games.

 

6-team bracket - (All Grades other than 8th Grade) - Two divisions are created with three teams in each.  Round robin within division.  Teams are then seated.  Division-1 first place plays Division-2 first place. Division-1 second place plays Division-2 second place. .  Division-1 third place plays Division-2 third place.   

 

6-team bracket - (8TH Grade Only) - Two divisions are created with three teams in each.  Round robin within division.  Teams are then seated.  Division-1 first place plays Division-2 second place while Division-2 first place plays Division-1 second place.  The two winners from these games will meet in the Championship.  The 3rd place finishers in the division will play a consolation game for their 3 game guarantee.  

 

8-team bracket - Two divisions are created with four teams in each.  Round robin within division. After round robin play the two 1st place teams will then play for the championship. 

  

Tie-Breaker Rule:

 

Tiebreakers will be head-to-head matches.  The 2nd tiebreaker will be the greatest point differential of teams that are tied, in games that those teams have played against one another. The highest point differential used in the calculations will be 13.

The 3rd tiebreaker will be the flip of a coin.
