My husband and I have worked the CDH non-profit events at every major stadium in the Twin Cities over the years. I began working the CDH tuition assistance events several years ago and enlisted my husband to join me shortly thereafter. He was not a willing participant and didn’t come voluntarily. However, after working a couple of events he really came to enjoy it. Obviously it’s not the work that we enjoy, it’s the people. We affectionately like to think of it as our “underground pool of CDH friends.”
The camaraderie of the CDH parents in this group is amazing. Spend a few hours sweating over a hot dog grill together and you really get to know someone. We are all working for a common goal and we all have stories behind why we are working these events. We all realize the importance of a strong catholic education for our children. Other schools in our area are not an option in my eyes for one educational reason or another but without this tuition assistance program CDH would not have been an option for our family financially. With multiple children all in private schools, it becomes a large financial burden on any family.
The more obvious reasons for supporting this program are; the variety of events that are available to work, the variety of schedules, the flexibility to change which events we work when things come up and the non-taxable income that goes directly to the school makes this option far better than any part time job that we have considered. Six years so far without writing a CDH tuition check is definitely worth a little hard work, sweat, and laughter among friends.

My husband and I were concerned about paying for tuition at CDH and heard about 'concession work'. I am a schoolteacher, so I decided to make the concession work my summer job. I worked less than I would have if I had had a summer job. I decided when I wanted to work. Over the summer I managed to pay for over two months of tuition!!!!!!! The money I earned was tax free, so I didn’t have to worry about another W2 form, or ANY problem with taxes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I even had fun working Twins games - people were fun & interesting = fans and co-workers!
BEST of all, to me, I met some wonderful people! I felt, after one game, I had met some neat people! I felt connected to the school and not so overwhelmed by "all the new faces” when I attend school functions.
I cannot tell you how I appreciate the opportunities this program has given me!

In June of 2010, my family and I attended a Twins game against the New York Yankees and just happened to stop at the CDH booth to get some snacks. Well that was the first time I was aware that CDH had a program whereby parents can work the games to earn money towards tuition for my son. So shortly thereafter, my wife and I attended the training and scheduled to work out first game. We were a bit nervous at first but when we showed up at the booth, we were welcomed with open arms and friendly smiles. I remember several people helping us to get orientated on what to do and before I realized it we were wrapping buns and filling chili cups. We worked about 20 games that season and the following year over 30. It was a great opportunity to meet other parents. There were several nights we worked that we thought to ourselves “this sure beats sitting around the house watching television.” Since our son is over 16, he had the chance to work at several Golden Gopher games with some of his friends and help “pay” for part of his education. I enjoy being part of the program and will do it again because it sure is a pleasant surprise opening the tuition statement and seeing a nice reduction.

I cannot say enough positives about this program. What a great opportunity to pay tuition, meet other CDH parents, and have fun. Some of the events turn into long days but working with such a mixed, fun, group of people has made every moment worthwhile. We started in this program due to a job loss; this work was going to be a temporary thing. However, once we started we never looked back. Receiving the tuition statement and seeing a credit applied was motivation. Our goal has always been to pay at least half the monthly tuition bill through concession work – well, we’ve done that and more. We have paid almost all our tuition for multiple children working this program. The program is independent of financial aid and it is tax-free money.
