OPENING DAY 2017

Cadets expertly play "Ode to Newfoundland"

Tommy Walsh

Jan. 28, 1933 - Aug. 9, 2017

It is with great sadness that we must pass along the news of the passing of one of the most beloved members of our league.  Tommy Walsh has passed away today, surrounded by family and friends.

For nearly 38 years, Tommy played in the Mount Pearl Men’s Slo-Pitch Softball League and for the last couple, was the 16th man and father figure to a young North Atlantic team.  Tommy was a gentleman who enjoyed the game and welcomed the challenge.  He played every game to win and he expected the same from his opponents, not expecting them to let up for his sake.

Tommy had on many occasions, won his teams Most Spirited Player award, winning the award for the league in 2006.  Tommy is also one of the holders of the Lifetime Achievement Award, given nearly annually to a member who has given freely of his time to play, umpire or volunteer over the years to make this league better.  Tommy could have easily done this with a word and his smile.

Tommy’s sports life stretched far beyond the foul lines.  He was a member of committees for the Mount Pearl Marlins, Mount Pearl Soccer Association and the Mount Pearl Recreation Commission.  His many accomplishments can be seen here as he was inducted into the Mount Pearl Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.

Tommy was a great athlete, but a better person who made everyone around him better for knowing him.  Tommy will be missed around the ball field and Mount Pearl.  Prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to Alice and family.

Congratulations to City Tire and Auto for winning the 2017 Mount Pearl men's Slo-Pitch crown!  The boys had a great play-off, first knocking off the regular season champions, Larry's Tax Services, and then beating a very strong Pepsi team to take the title.  Going into the semi finals and finals, Las Vegas had City Tire the huge underdogs, but they played the role perfectly.  By playing solid defence and using timely hitting they were able to cap off a great play-off run.  Congrats guys.

Dart League Makes Donation

Thursday night Dart league raised $1500 and this past week presented the cheque to former ballplayer Jim Bishop, to help out with his wifes trip to Toronto for surgery on her cancer. We wish them a safe and successful trip.

Past President - Roy Crocker

Jan 10, 1956 - Mar 30, 2018

It is with great sadness that we must once again say goodbye to a great member of our softball family.  Roy Crocker, a past President of our league passed away on March 30th following a courageous battle with cancer.

Roy, aside from being a great guy, was the league President from 2001 - 2005.  He also served on many committees during his time in the league.  Roy loved his game of ball and a game of darts.  Sadly though he was a Maple Leaf fan, but I guess we can forgive him for that.  In 2014 Roy was awarded the leagues “Lifetime Achievement Award” for his dedication to the Mount Pearl Men’s Softball League.

Roy will be greatly missed by the many guys that played with him and against him.  Prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to the Crocker and Legge family.

Dave "Norton" Learning

It is with great sadness that I must report the sudden passing of one of the most liked guys in our league, Dave "Norton" Learning.  Dave has been a fixture in our league for 20 years where a lot of those years were spent on the Executive.  Dave was a Director, Vice President and President, and served our league with honour and humility.  Dave was a fixture on the Tols\Peets team for years, with the last couple as their 16 man.  His fun loving attitude and dry wit will be greatly missed around the field and clubhouse.

There will be a get together after the service on Tuesday at the clubhouse for tea, coffee and sandwiches to chat and celebrate the life of Dave.

 Great Year for MPMSPSL Players

D&D 2019 Award Winners

Once again this year, the Annual Dinner & Dance turned out to be a huge success.  I mean, how could it not with the fine bunch of gentlemen and ladies that make up this great league.  It was a big crowd of smiling faces again that made the evening one of the most enjoyable of the year.

After an enjoyable meal we moved on to the awards portion of the evening.  The award ceremony is always a special part of the annual D&D and this year, was again, no exception.  Here is a list of this years winners:

Lifetime Achievement Award

This year the award was presented to a gentleman who was a fixture in our league for over 20 years.  Half of those years was spent on the Executive as a Director, Secretary, Vice President, and a short term as President.  He served on Social and Recreation Committees and spent his time as the social director for his long term team, Tol's/Peets.  This years award went to a very deserving, Dave "Norton" Learning.  Presenting this award was emotionally difficult due to the fact that Dave passed away last January, thus denying us the opportunity to thank Dave for his years of service to the League.  On hand to accept his award was his wife Juanita, daughters Danielle and Davina and sister-in-law Joyce.

Volunteer of the Year Award

Each year this award is given to an individual who goes above and beyond to help out the league on and off the field.  But not all volunteers are seen selling tickets or BBQing burgers.  This years winner over the last 4 or 5 years have donated and collected prizes through out the summer, dropping off bags of "swag" every few weeks, to be used for prizes during the D&D.  This year was no exception as 47 prize bags were distributed, with most of the items coming from this years winner, Derrick James.

Most Spirited and Sportsmanlike Player

Each year all 16 teams select a Most Spirited & Sportsmanlike  player for their team.  These 16 players are invited to the annual Appreciation night, held earlier in the fall.  From this group of 16 fine young men, one is selected to receive the Tommy Walsh Memorial Award.  It was hard for us to believe that this gentleman had never won the award, but it was fitting as he later told us that this would be his last year as a player.  The winner of this years award, and a fine gentleman, Mr. Ray Nixon!

Scholarship Award Winners

Each year the League issues multiple scholarships for children/grandchildren of league members who are completing high school and are moving on to post-secondary institutions.  This year was no exception.  This years winners in no particular order were:  Reyna Young, Cameron Flynn, Ryan Chislett, Riley Mercer and Connor Swain.

 Homerun Champ

This years winner of the "Ron Squires Memorial Award" for the most homeruns during the regular season was once again, Chris Companion with 13 "dingers".

Recipient of the Rod Noseworthy Memorial Fund

2020 Scholarship Winners

2020 has been a mess for all of us who play in the Mount Pearl Men’s Slo-Pitch Softball League.  A summer with ball with 240 of our best friends.  We missed the game, the team get togethers, as well as the annual D&D. One thing we did not want to miss, was to award our Memorial Scholarships to deserving children and grandchildren (and maybe great-great grandchildren from Nelson).

The MPMSPSL have been awarding scholarships to young men and women who are graduation high school and moving on to secondary schools, for 30 years to the tune of over $60,000.  This year we did not want to miss this opportunity.  This year we have decided to award four $500 scholarships.  The job of the Scholarship committee in selecting 4 students based on academic achievement and community involvement was extremely difficult because of the high caliber of applicants.

Awards were presented by League President Ford Pollard and Scholarship Committee member Craig Stokes.  In no particular order,  this years recipients are:

Courtney Boone (Daughter of Rick Boone)

Nathan Flynn (Son of Frank Flynn)

Samuel Curnew (Son of Shane Curnew)

Richard "Monty" Lavandier

April 13, 1946 - October 19, 2016

As most of you know by now, our ball league and indeed the city of Mount Pearl lost a great friend last week.  If you have been in the league longer than 5 years you will know Richard, but for the guys who are new to the league, here are some things you should know.

Richard was a long time player (over 25 years) and sponsor in our league (Aluma Systems) and for 6 years was the league president.  Before that he served on the executive for several years in other positions.  Richard was a life member of Kin Canada having dedicated 47 years with the service club. He was recognized over the years for his volunteerism, with such awards as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Beaumont-Hamel “local hero commemorative award”, and the City of Mount Pearl 2016 Community Service Award.  Put this all together and you have a great man, who for us in our ball league are honored to have the softball field named in his memory.

Richard Levandier Softball Field

Congratulations to Richard and family as tonight the Softball field at the Team Gushue Complex has been named after him. Here is a picture of Richard with some past and present members of the softball league.

Habs win!  Habs win!  Habs win!

This years edition of the "Flip-Up" Cup between the fans of the Leafs and the Habs is in the books.  This year, Habs fans came out on top in a hard fought battle 18-17.  40+ players came out to support their team in this epic battle.  Next year we hope to up those numbers!

One of the bonuses of this game was also to collect food for the St. Vincent De Paul Society.  The food table will be open for anybody to drop off their non-perishable food items for the next week or two.  Feel free to drop by the clubhouse on Wednesday or Thursday evenings during the dart leagues to make your donation.

Thanks everyone for a fantastic year!

Tommy Walsh Retires

After nearly 38 years in the Mount Pearl Men’s Slo-Pitch League, Tommy has decided that now was the right time to walk away from the game.  Keeping his decision a relative secret, until word got out during his teams game last night, Tommy finished his career with a solid single to right to a resounding round of applause from all those in attendance.  Tom Walsh is a gentleman who enjoyed the game and welcomed the challenge.  He played every game to win and he expected the same from his opponents, not expecting them to let up for his sake..... and he let you know it, just ask Byron.

Tommy’s sports life stretched beyond the foul lines.  He has been a member of committees for the Mount Pearl Marlins, Mount Pearl Soccer Association and the Mount Pearl Recreation Commission.  His many accomplishments can be seen here as he was inducted into the Mount Pearl Sports Hall of Fame.

Ron Squires

As was posted in the blog over the last couple of days, we have lost a great friend, ballplayer and builder of our league, Ron Squires.

Ron was a long time player and Executive member who spent a lot of his free time on and around the ball field at St. Davids.  Ron, who spent nearly 30 years playing in our league, was also the President on 3 different occasions, totaling 14 years in all as president.  Add to that the years at other executive positions, time on committees and time spend closing up after rentals, and you see what kind of man Ron was and what he has meant to this league.

Rest in peace Ron, you will be greatly missed.

Congratulations to the Rug Room for finishing 1st overall during the regular season

A pretty good crowd down to the field last night were treated to a great game between The Rug Room and Twin Cities Imaging.  With Twin ahead 3-2 in the top of the 7th, Darryl Nixon hit a 2 out, 2 run single to put the Rug Room ahead.  A lead that they held in the bottom for the win.  Both teams played a great defensive game, which is the hallmark to any great playoff team.  Careful boys... don't touch the trophy!

Opening Day 2014

After beautifully playing "Maple Leaf Forever" the 807 Air Cadet Band played a stiring rendition of "O Canada".

What followed was a great display of athletic ability as Mayor Simms tossed out the first pitch to our own prennial championship jacket winner, Tommy Walsh.

let the games begin!
