Naples-5 Aquinas-4

April 21, 2010
It was the battle of state champions. The 2009 Florida State Champion Naples vs. the 2009 New York State Champion Aquinas Lil' Irish. AQ jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first when Sean Hare led off the game with a walk. C.J. Von Bargen and Chris Bostick hit back to back singles to load the bases. Jalen Dennis then singled to score Hare. Charlie Welling hit the fourth straight single to score Von Bargen to make the score 2-0. With the bases still loaded, Taylor Byrne hit in to a 6-4-3 double play but Bostick scored on the play to make it 3-0. That score stood until the bottom of the fourth when Naples was able to push a run across on two walks and a double. In the fifth Aquinas looked to extend the lead when Adam Knauf was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Hare sacrifice bunted Knauf to second. C.J. Von Bargen hit a line drive that looked like it was heading for the left center field gap but the Naples left fielder made a spectacular diving catch to rob Von Bargen and keep the score at 3-1. In the Naples half of the fifth, their first batter reached on an error and the next batter doubled to score the run. Two batters later a single tied the score at three. Aquinas took the lead back in the top of the sixth when Dennis singled and Welling doubled him home to make the score 4-3. Naples tied the score again in their half of the sixth on two doubles. Seminole Ridge-2 Aquinas-1

April 20, 2010
Another 2-1 game and another AQ loss as the Lil' Irish fell to 1-3 in Florida. Runs have been hard to come by for Aquinas this spring. The team again struggled with the bats. It seems AQ faces everyones ace pitcher. Jalen Dennis was tonight's hard luck pitcher. Dennis pitched well enough to win but the run support wasn't there. He struggled a bit in the first two innings giving up five hits and three walks but settled down nicely and only gave up one hit the rest of the way. Seminole Ridge scored one run in the first and one run in the second but that turned out to be enough. AQ didn't get a hit until the third inning when Sean Hare's slow roller to third that the third baseman could not come up, with was ruled a hit. Aquinas' only run came in the sixth when Hare reached on a fielders choice. Chris Bostick then hit a chopper down the third base line that the third baseman fielded and threw to first. Bostick beat the throw but the ball got past the first baseman allowing Hare to score. Charlie Welling broke out of a slump with a line drive base hit to right center field that was reminiscent of the 2009 Welling.

Hare infield hit, Bostick infield hit, Welling single.

AQ drew first blood in the top of the first when Chris Bostick hit a two out single and then stole second base. Jalen Dennis then roped a single to score Bostick. Cypress Lake tied the score in their half of the inning with a single and a double. In the top of the third Sean Hare put the Lil' Irish back on top with a towering home run over the 365' sign in left center field. That lead was short lived as Cypress Lake singled and homered in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead. AQ went down 1-2-3 in the fourth. Cypress Lake added a run in their half of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. AQ scored their third and final run in the top of the fifth when Taylor Byrne singled and advanced to third on a botched pick off attempt by Cypress Lake. Jalen Dennis singled and moved Von Bragen to second. With two outs Mike Ruffin singled and and loaded the bases.
