Bishop Kearney’s 3-0 start that includes blowout wins over Wayland-Cohocton, Honeoye Falls-Lima and Olean, coupled with Waterloo’s seven-point loss to Pittsford Sutherland propelled the Kings from No. 2 to No. 1 in Week 2 of the Democrat and Chronicle’s small-school coaches’ poll. Penfield and Gates Chili remain 1-2 in the large-school poll, but there were a few shifts and slides by a spot or two for a few schools and a jump from No. 10 to No. 7 by Mercy, which is 3-0. While Kearney is the defending Class C state champion, the Kings have moved up to Class B. They’ll get a couple of stern tests this weekend in Syracuse, playing at Nottingham and Fayetteville-Manlius, a pair of AA and A schools, respectively. The best Monroe County matchup on Friday night is No. 4 Irondequoit traveling to No. 8 Mendon. It’s the Eagles’ fifth game against a team ranked in the D&C poll and while they’re the higher seed in this matchup, they’ve lost two straight following a strong 3-0 start. Mendon, meanwhile, can show a lot of folks it is in fact for real if it can knock off Irondequoit.
