Final Brackets

MoCo JV Tournament

Way to go to the 14 QO wrestlers who competed in the county Junior Varsity tournament on Saturday.  There was nothing junior about any of their performances. All showed great effort and hearts and wrestled as well as they have all season.

At the end of the day two Cougars were crowned champions.  Sophomore Tyler Enceneat quickly pinned his first two opponents and then went on to win his 220 lb championship match when the other wrestler had too many technical violations.  Tyler was comfortably ahead 12-2 before the referee stopped the match.  Zeph Titus improved on his 2nd place finish last season in his freshman year and won the 285 lb weight class with two decisive victories.

Also making the championship finals but earning silver medals were Sophomores Danny Henn and Jack Hanson.  Danny's 160 lb class had a 32 man bracket but he pinned his first four opponents before losing in the championship final.  Wrestling at 182 lbs Jack had impressive first period pins in his first two matches before getting beaten in his finals match.

Junior Fernando Reyes was also in a very large field of 152 lb wrestlers.  He won his first match by fall .  He injured  his shoulder during his next match which he lost.  He showed his toughness when he wrestled with some pain in his next bout as he came back from a 5-0 deficit to win by fall.  The Gaithersburg trainer told him to shut it down for the day after that ending Fernando's day as well as his season.  He was undefeated for junior varsity competition this season with the exception of the loss he had while fighting the pain of his injured shoulder in this tournament.Danny Henn rolls one of his opponents on to his back

Sophomore 106 lber Ryan Lampos earned a first round win by fall before losing his next match which moved him into the consolation round.  In his first consolation round match Ryan had an impressive come from behind victory with a late take down to beat Churchill's wrestler 5-4. Senior Douglas Van Hook also ended a successful JV season and his QO wrestling career with a pin during his first 160 lb match before being eliminated in the next round.  Two freshmen representing the Cougars in the 145 lb weight class, Bret Williams and Blake Adkins, both won their first matches by fall before losses in their next respective matches ended their day. Senior C.J. Neal (195 lbs), Junor Nick Acosta (160) lbs, Sophomore Ali Manan (132 lbs) along with Freshmen Nate Stevens (113 lbs) and Jarret Kowalski (138 lbs) all wrestler very well but did not advance past the first round of competition.

Congrats to our two champions, two second place finishers and to the rest of the squad who represented their school and themselves very well.  We're all expecting big things from this talented and hard working group of great young men.  Next season starts today!

Senior Night vs Gaithersburg

The Gaithersburg Trojans visited the QO gym were drubbed by the Cougars 50-15 as five of the six starting Quince Orchard seniors celebrated Senior Night by earning victories in their last home match as Cougar wrestlers.  QO's seniors in the two highest weight classes, Carlos Bustos and Connor Tilton, ended their matches early with pins.  Seniors Matt Fuster and Daviante Butler finished with three point decisions while Senior Jonathan Kim defeated his G-burg opponent 13-3 to earn a major decision and four team points.  Junior Kyle Bollinger also recorded a major decision over his opponent.  Juniors Ty Danforth and Alex Blackman both beat their Trojan opponents in decisions while sophomore Ryan Lampos was awarded a win by forfeit.  The varsity Cougars ended their regular season with a final record of 8-6.

On the JV slate, the junior Cougars pinned six of their Gaithersburg opponents led by Senior Douglas Van Hook.  Juniors Anthony Paarporn and Nick Acosta, Sophomores Danny Henn and Jack Hanson and Freshman Will Scott also each added a six point fall to the team score.  Bret Williams had an easy 9-0 win for a major decision. QO's JV ended up on the winning end of a 40-18 score versus Gaithersburg.    Photos

QO Seniors

Poolesville, Northwest Tri-Meet

On Saturday the Cougar grapplers rode over to nearby Northwest High School where they faced the Jaguars and the Poolesville Falcons in a tri-meet.  QO's varsity squad was somewhat diminished from the outset as they were missing a few key starters from their lineup. QO won only 5 of the 14 matches with senior Connor Tilton earning the only pin.  Seniors Jonny Kim, Jordain Damas and Daviante Butler along with Junior Kyle Bollinger and Sophomore Eisley Kim all added three point decisions for the Cougars. On the JV mat, the junior Cougars only won four of ten but three were by fall which enabled them to outscore the baby Jags by a score of 21-18.

In the Poolesville match, QO had to go to their bench to replace yet another injured starter which proved to be just enough of a setback to prevent them from winning.  QO won six matches and lost by a one match swing by a score of 37-28.  This is the Cougars 4th loss of the season that swung their opponents way by one match.  Senior Connor Tilton, Junior Kyle Bollinger and Sophomore Eisley Kim each earned their second win of the afternoon with a pin.  Senior Carlo Bustos scored a 15-7 major decision over his Falcon opponent.  Seniors Jonny Kim and Matt Fuster also added three point decisions to the Cougars total.

There were only three JV matches against Poolesville and Nick Acosta was the only Cougar wrestler to walk away victorious.

Walter Johnson and Churchill Tri-Meet

After watching Churchill get by Walter Johnson, Quince Orchard's varsity wrestlers took on the WJ team in the 2nd of three matches on Saturday's tri-meet slate. The Cougar wrestlers took 8 of the 14 bouts as they trounced the Wildcats 45-25.  Senior wrestlers Jonathan Kim, Jordain Damas, Matt Fuster and Connor Tilton all recorded falls as did Junior Kyle Bollinger and Sophomore Antonio Lopez-Marin.  Senior Daviante Butler also added six points after he was awarded a win by forfeit.  Hunter Bunai scored a last second takedown to earn three team points in a wild and crazy 19-17 win.

Walter Johnson only had five JV wrestlers and the Junior Cougars won four of those.  Senior Douglas Van Hook and Sophomore Danny Henn won by fall while Junior Anthony Paarporn and Freshman Bret Williams each outscored their respective opponents for a three point decision.

In the final match of the evening, QO faced off against the tough host Churchill squad.  This was a back and forth affair which came down to the final match.  The Bulldogs prevailed 36-31.  Junior Kyle Bollinger won by fall as did Junior Tadiyah Danforth and Sophomore Antonio Lopez-Marin.  Senior Connor Tilton recorded his 99th career victory when Churchill did not present an opponent and awarded him a forfeit.  Senior Jonathan Kim earned a four point major decision with a 10-0 shutout and Junior About Keita scored three team points with his 5-3 decision.  Senior Carlo Bustos injured his ribs in the WJ match but put on a heroic effort to try and get a much needed win as he fought through pain in a losing effort.  Senior Jordain Dumas also showed great courage as he went toe to toe with one of the county's top ranked wrestlers trying to get the go ahead win in the final match of the day.

The JV Cougars won four of their eleven matches against the Baby Bulldogs with Junior Nick Acosta along with Sophomores Danny Henn and Tyler Enceneat scoring quick pins.  Sophomore Ryan Lampos also added an 8-2 victory to the Cougars win column.

Tilton joins the century club and all members honored!

Quince Orchard hosted a depleted Seneca Valley squad which forfeited half of the fourteen weight classes.   The Cougars cruised to an easy 66-12 victory.  Leading the way with pins were our senior trio of upper weights:  Daviante Butler, Matt Fuster and Connor Tilton along with Junior Kyle Bollinger. Connor's first period fall to end the match was his 100th career victory making him the 11th wrestler in Cougar history to reach that milestone.  Immediately after the match there was a brief award ceremony recognizing the first 10 members of the Cougar Wrestling Century Club and adding Connor as it's newest member.   Century Club wrestlers that were either on hand or represented by family members were:  Rod Garcia ('97), Frankie Baughan ('03),  Ignacio Garcia ('04), Eddie Baughan ('05), Dake Williams ('09), Reed Neubaum ('10), Eli Bienstock ('12) and Gage Neubaum ('12).  David Chee ('95) and Aaron Dorsey ('99) were hoping to attend but were unable. Connor Tilton Secures a Pin for his 100th QO Win!

The Cougar JV grapplers only had four junior Screaming Eagles to face and they beat them all in grand fashion.  Sophomores Jack Hanson and Tyler Enceneat both ended their matches early with first period pins as did freshman Bret Williams.  Tyler pinned his opponent in  1 mintue 45 seconds, while Brett's match only lasted 37 seconds and Jack's a mere 34 seconds.  Freshman Jarret Kowalski earned his first win as a Cougar with an impressive 9-0 major decision.

QO Crushes the Patriots, Subdued by the Colonels

The Cougar wrestlers took on neighboring Wooton High School on Saturday afternoon in the first match of their tri-meet.  QO won 9 of the 14 matches on their way to a 45 to 23 victory.  Seniors Jordain Damas, Daviante Butler and Matt Fuster along with Junior Fernando Reyes and Sophomore Antonio Lopez-Marin all won their matches with pins.  Junior Kyle Bollinger and Sophomores Alex Blackman and  Eisley Kim each added three point decisions to the Cougars tally.  Wooton did not send out an opponent to face Connor Tilton who was awarded a win by forfeit.

The JV Cougars were wrestling the Junior Patriots at the same time with similar results bettering their Wooton opponents by a score of 30-24.  Sophomores Ryan Lampos, Danny Henn and Jack Hanson all won by fall as did Freshmen Will Scott and Leland Thomas

In the next varsity match against Magruder the Cougars had a disappointing showing only winning 6 to the Colonels 8 matches.  Senior Matt Fuster accounted for the Cougars only pin in his 220 lb match.  Senior Carlo Bustos beat his opponent by 9 to earn a 4 point major decision.  Senior Daviante Butler and Junior Fernando Reyes both added wins for QO while Senior Connor Tilton and Junior Kyle Bollinger both earned their six point victories by forfeit.  The match ended with Magruder up by 12 points, 40-28.  The Varsity Cougars are now 5-3 on the season.

The QO JV squad did their job by besting their Magruder JV counterparts 24-9. Junior Anthony Paaporn, Sophomore Zeph Titus and Freshman Blake Adkins led the way with wins by fall.  Junior Nick Acosta and Freshman Will Scott both added three point wins to the final total. Photos

Hub Cup Tournament

The Quince Orchard wrestling team spent the weekend up in the Hub City of Hagerstown competing in North High's 27th Annual Hub Cup tournament.  This is one of the most competitive tournaments in the entire state and this year there were 23 public and private school teams from Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Delaware.  QO has been attending this tournament for years and this may have been one of the toughest fields that we've ever seen with top wrestlers from each of the above mentioned states in attendance.  Quince Orchard finished in 15th place overall, 11 points ahead of one of next Saturday's opponents, Magruder.  Cape Henlopen of Delaware was the overall team champion.  Connor Tilton, who last year was the tournament champion in the 220 lb weight class, earned his 2nd Hub Cup crown, this year in the 285 pound category.  Connor pinned his way through his bracket including a 1st period pin over last year's 285 champion from Urbana High School.  QO had no other placers in a tournament where some weight classes were tougher than a state tournament.  Juniors Tony Wimmer (152 lb)and Hunter Bunai (170 lb) each had two wins by fall before they were eliminated.  Senior Jordain Damas (160 lb) Junior Kyle Bollinger (138 lb) and Sophomore Antonio Lopez-Marin (113 lb) all won one match a piece by pin.  Senior Matt Fuster (220 lb) had a decisive 11-5 win over his Urbana opponent.   Photos

QO vs Damascus

The defending state champion Damascus Hornets came to Cougar country last night and found out that Quince Orchard's grapplers were not going to roll over and make life easy for them.  Damascus proved why they were state champions and with an even better team than last year, will likely earn that title again this year.  Quince Orchard stepped up to the occasion and won five of the fourteen varsity matches to end up on the short end of a 53-21 score.  This was the most points that any team has scored against Damascus so far this season.  The biggest win for the Cougars was Junior Kyle Bollinger's statement match over highly ranked Cory Obendorfer where Kyle rode out Obendorfer for the entire 3rd period to hold on to a 1-0 decision. Senior Carlo Bustos added a fall.  Junior Abou Keita went into overtime but got the takedown and almost pinned his opponent ultimately winning by a score of 15-10.  Senior Matthew Fuster avoided overtime by scoring a takedown with 3 seconds left in his match to break a tie and earning a 3-1 win.  Senior Connor Tilton earned six team points when Damascus forfeited that weight classs.

The junior varsity contest had very similar results with the Hornet larva outscoring QO 53-24.  Junior Fernando Reyes along with sophomores Jack Hanson and Tyler Enceat all won with quick first period pins of 18 second, 49 seconds and 13 seconds respectively. Juniors Henry Canova and Anthony Paaporn each added 10-3 decisions to the QO tally.

QO Wrestling Slams the Rams

On Saturday, our QO grapplers took a bus ride over to Rockville HS to take on the Rams (or as we used to affectionately refer to them when I as at neighboring Peary High School, the "R-Poos").  In 14 varsity matches the Cougars won all but three.  Seniors Connor Tilton, Isaiah Briscoe and Jordan Dumas all ended their matches early with pins as did Junior Kyle Bollinger.  Senior Carlo Bustos earned a major decision.  Seniors Jonathan Kim and Matt Fuster each earned three team points for their decisions as did Junior Tony Wimmer and Sophomore Eisley Kim.  Freshman Ryan Lampos and Junior Tadiyah Danforth each had their hand raised after Rockville forfeited their respective weight classes.  The final score was QO 52 Rockville 13.

The junior Cougar wrestlers picked up where the varsity left off and were victorious in 8 out of their 9 match-ups in a 44-6 shellacking.  Six JV cougars recorded pins:  Seniors Frank Yu and CJ Neal, Junors Nick Acosta and Payton Johnson, Sophomore Tyler Enceneat and Freshman Blake Adkins.  Sophomore Ali Manan created some excitement with a 17-0 2nd period technical fall.  Freshman Nate Stevens added a win.

Whitman JV Tournament

Seventeen Cougar JV wrestlers drove down River Road to invade the friendly confines of Walt Whitman High School's gymnasium where they participated in their annual holiday JV tournament.  QO competed with JV squads from Northwest, B-CC, Sherwood, Magruder, Spriingbrook, Walter Johnson, Whitman and Paint Branch. The Sophomore Jack Hanson takes down his opponent at the Whitman JV Tournamenttournament was in a round-robin format with each wrestler getting 3 matches.  QO had four wrestlers go undefeated in their grouping:  Senior Douglas Van Hook, Junior Fernando Reyes and Sophomores Danny Henn and Zeph Titus all beat each one of their three opponents respectively.  Zeph Titus pinned two of three wrestlers he faced off against.  Senior Frank Yu, Junior Nick Acosta, Sophomore Ryan Lampos, Jack Hanson and Freshmen Leland Thomas all earned two wins against one loss for the day.  Juniors Hunter Bunai and Payton Johnson along with Sophomore Tyler Enceneat and Freshman Will Scott all added a win to their records. As an added bonus, several of the the undefeated wrestlers had a chance to wrestle in one more match against the undefeated wrestler in their adjacent weight bracket.  That put two QO undefeateds face-to-face as Ferndando Reyes held off Douglas Van Hook in a close fought 2-0 match.  Danny Henn came up close but lost to his Whitman opponent 10-6.

The Cougars Wack The Wolverines!

Senior Connor TiltonThursday night's wins were even more convincing than Clarksburg's over a scrappy Watkins Mill team.  The varsity matmen won 11 of the 14 contests and outdistanced the Wolverines 53-15.  Leading the way for the Cougars with pins were:  Seniors Carlo Bustos (145), Matt Fuster (220) and Connnor Tilton (2850; Juniors Carlo Bustos (145) and Tony Wimmer (160) as well as Sophomore Ryan Lampos (106).  Sophomore Eisley Kim (182) and Senior Daviante Butler each had victories by a margin of 8 or more points to score major decisions for the Cougars.  Juniors Hunter Bunai and Alex Blacman along with senior Isaiah Briscoe wrapped up the scoring by earning 3 points each for their decisions.

Senior Matt Fuster clamps down hard to secure a pin

The JV wrestlers won by a 39 point margin in their ten match-ups. Seniors Doug Van Hook and Nick Acosta were not on the mat for long as they pinned their Wolverine opponents in 34 and 29 seconds respectively.   Junior Ty Danforth and Sophomore Tyler Enceneat both added first period pins.  Freshman Cory Amoroso ended his match in the 3rd period when he defeated his opponent by fall.  The clear hightlight of the evening was when Sophomore Ali Manan had his hand raised for the first time in his wrestling career after a thrilling 6-4 win over his Watkins Mill foe.  Ali's match was all tied up with about 30 seconds left in the 3rd period and Ali on the bottom.  He managed to escape for one point and keep his opponent at bay for the last 20 seconds. The QO fans and wrestlers exploded with excitement as they watched Ali earn three points for his team.  Photos

On Tuesday at Clarksburg, QO won nine of the fourteen match-ups on their way to a 48-28 victory over the host Coyotes.  Clarksburg forfeited the 113 and 285 pound weight classes to Taiwan Dorsey and Connor Tilton, respectively.  Five Cougars recorded falls - Junors Ty Danforth (120) and Tony Wimmer (170), Seniors Daviante Butler (195) and Matt Fuster (220) and Sophomore Eisley Kim (182) who earned his first win as a varsity Cougar.  Junior Kyle Bollinger earned a 5-1 decision while Junior Henry Canova pulled out an 8-6 sudden victory overtime win.

Mad Mats Tournament

Quince Orchard was one of 22 public and private high school wrestling teams from Maryland, DC, Virginia and Pennsylvania to compete at the 12th annual Mad Mats tournament hosted by Magruder High School this past weekend.  We finished in 8th place overall. Connor Tilton pinned his Old Mill HS opponent in the championship final to take 1st place.  Daviante Butler also made it to the final round but injured his shoulder against his LaSalle (PA) foe which ended the match early.  Daviante ended up with the 2nd place medal and is expected to be able to be back on the mat next week.  Kyle Bollinger lost to a tough Bullis wrestler in the first round but wrestled his way back to the 5th place.  He faced the Bullis wrestler again in the 5th/6th place match and this time was on the winning end of the score.  Sophomore Danny Henn (182 lbs) and Senior Matt Fuster (220 lbs) each earned 6th place honors.

Team Scores

QO vs Springbrook

The Quince Orchard grapplers earned their first win on Wednesday night as they defeated the visiting Springbrook Blue Devils by a score of 36 to 24.  Eight Cougars had their hands raised after their respective bouts ended.  Junior co-captain Kyle Bollinger (138 lbs) pinned his opponent after a mere 53 ticks of the clock.  Junior Hunter Bunai (182 lbs) and Sophomore Ryan Lampos (106 lbs) also earned six team points by fall.  Lampos's pin clinched the victory for QO with 2 matches remaining.  Juniors Abou Keita (132 lbs), Henry Canova (145 lbs) and Seniors Daviante Butler (195 lbs) and Matt Fuster (220 lbs) all recorded decisions. Butler won his match with a sudden victory takedown in overtime.  Springbrook did not offer up an opponent to challenge Connor Tilton (285 lbs) who earned his six team points with a forfeit.  Tilton's name appeared in Thursday's Washington Post as their 2nd ranked 285 pound class wrestler in the DC area.  Abou Keita secures his second win of the season

QO vs. Sherwood

We opened up our season with a barn burner against the visiting Sherwood Warrior wrestling squad.  Unfortunately we were on the short end of the score as Sherwood pulled out a 36-28 victory which came down to the final 2 matches.  Sherwood has been predicted to be one of the county's top teams this year and a gritty Cougar squad almost pulled off an upset.  Junior Captain Kyle Bollinger got the attention of county and state wrestling fans when he decisively beat highly ranked Chris Minor of Sherwood 7-0 in the 138 pound class.  Sophomore Antonio Lopez-Marin (120 lbs), Seniors Jordain Dumas (182 lbs) and Captain Connor Tilton (285 lbs) all recorded falls.  Senior Jonathon Kim earned 4 team points in a 11-0 major decision and Junior Abou Keita rallied to capture a 15-11 decision over his Sherwood foe.  Sherwood's 220 pounder scored a major upset over Matt Fuster in the next to final match clinching the win for the Warriors.  We will face Sherwood again in our gym in 3 weeks when they return for the Cougar Claus tournament.  Hopefully we'll have our optimum lineup in place and turn the tables.

In JV action, our junior Cougars won 8 of 14 matches in a 42-30 victory.  Winning their debut high school matches were:  Sophomores Jack Hanson and Eisley Kim with first period falls and Freshman Nate Stevens and Junior Payton Johnson each earned decisions.  Also pinning their opponents were:  Junior Fernando Reyes, Senior Douglas Van Hook and Sophomore Tyler Enceneat.  Sophomore Danny Henn won by injury default.  His matched was stopped when his opponent dislocated his elbow.  The EMTs were called and transported him safely to Montgomery General Hospital.
