Scholarship Overview

Program Guidelines:

Dear Raritan High School Senior,

Hazlet Youth Athletic League (“HYAL”) is pleased to offer an opportunity to receive a one-time $500 scholarship for having participated in HYAL sports and for having received a Varsity sports letter from Raritan High School. If you are interested in one of the seven sports scholarship offered, here's all you have to do. First, you need to get a copy of the HYAL application from your Guidance Counselor at RHS. Next, you must file your completed application no later than 8:00 am on the date determined by the Guidance Office in this, your senior year at Raritan High School. Your completed application must be returned to:

Guidance Office, Raritan High School  --  There are no exceptions to this deadline rule.

For you to be considered an HYAL Sports scholarship applicant, all of the following qualifications must have been attained:

  • You must have been a participant in any combination of HYAL sports for at least five (5) seasons prior to becoming a senior in high school.
  • You must maintained a minimum of a 2.75 GPA over the course of your career at Raritan High School.
  • You must have displayed a history of HYAL involvement, community involvement and volunteer work.
  • Strength and uniqueness of your completed "What impact did HYAL have on my life" essay.
  • You must be a graduating senior and have received a varsity letter in your junior or senior year at Raritan in one of these sports:
    1. Baseball
    2. Basketball Boys
    3. Basketball Girls
    4. Cheerleading
    5. Football
    6. Softball
    7. Wrestling

  • All applicants for the HYAL Sports Scholarship will be considered for the William Mueller Scholarship.

It gives HYAL great pleasure to inform you that the Executive Board of the Hazlet Youth Athletic League (HYAL) has added an eighth scholarship, which we've called "The William Mueller" scholastic scholarship, to its scholarship program. HYAL will now provide a maximum of eight - $500 scholarships for graduating Raritan high school seniors. With the addition of the "William Mueller" scholarship:

  • You must have been a participant in any combination of HYAL sports for at least five (5) seasons prior to becoming a senior in high school.
  • You must maintained a minimum of a 2.75 GPA over the course of your career at Raritan High School.
  • You must have displayed a history of HYAL involvement, community involvement and volunteer work.
  • Strength and uniqueness of your completed "What impact did HYAL have on my life" essay.

The Executive Board has also decided to widen the scope of the original requirements for the seven HYAL sport scholarships. In the past, we have found that situations have arose, whereby there were no qualified seniors for one or more of the HYAL sport supported scholarships, and consequently none were given out for a particular sport. However, we have also seen where there were more than one qualified candidate for another particular sport, and consequently one or more of the qualified candidates would not receive a scholarship. In those scenarios, we are authorizing the Scholarship Committee to offer an "unclaimed" scholarship as an "At Large" for a particular HYAL supported sport to a second qualified candidate in another HYAL supported sport.

You may apply for only one HYAL  Sports Scholarship for your participation in any one of the seven sports listed above.   Note: As a point of clarification, varsity sport managers, score keepers and book keepers who have received a varsity letter in any of these sports also fulfill the HYAL sports scholarship eligibility requirements.

You must plan on attending an accredited two, or four-year college, or trade school. You must start the college or trade school in the Fall Semester after you have graduated from Raritan High School. The HYAL scholarship will be a one-time award of up to a maximum of $500 in any of the seven sports noted above. HYAL not only reserves the right to limit the number of scholarships bestowed each year, but may also cancel these scholarships at any time.

In addition to the scholarship, each winner will receive a personalized plaque commemorating his/her achievement.

If a winner fails to attend the college or trade school in the Fall semester following your graduation from Raritan High School, any monies received from the HYAL scholarship must be returned to HYAL by September 30th of that same year. The scholarship winners will be determined by anonymous votes by the HYAL Scholarship Committee. The decision of the Scholarship Committee is final. No substitutions will be offered. Unclaimed scholarships will be forfeited.
