2009 PLAYOFF RESULTS
LAST LAFF WINS THE CHICORA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
Last Laff vs. Armstrong Beer
Armstrong Beer took a 1-0 lead in the CLCS, beating the Last Laff 3-1. Craig Witenski started the bottom of the 1st inning with a lead off double and Goose Johns and Jarid Huth added a single apiece to take an early 1-0 lead. The Last Laff tied it up at 1-1 in the top of the 5th when Mike Fleeger led off with a single, Travis Bellis added a bunt single, Shawn Bellis laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Fleeger to 3rd, and Josh Behrens hit a sacrifice fly to bring Fleeger home. But Armstrong answered in the bottom of the 5th. Kenny Buzzard and D.J. Kutch's singles combined with 3 Last Laff errors to produce 2 runs, giving Armstrong a 3-1 lead. That was all they would need, as Last Laff only sent 3 batters to the plate in each of the last 2 innings. Scott Petras pitched for the win, holding Last Laff to just 6 hits.
A strong bench made the difference in Game 2 of the CLCS as the Last Laff posted a 6-5 come from behind victory. Armstrong drew first blood, scoring in the top of the 1st inning when Keith Clark was driven home on a Richie Toy double. However, the Last Laff answered in the bottom of the 1st with 3 runs of its own on singles by Doug Augustine, Joe Callihan, Chris Miller, and Andrew Larimore. Armstrong managed to score 1 run in each of the next 4 innings to take a 5-3 lead into the 6th. Strong at the plate for Armstrong was Richie Toy with 3 doubles, Mark Flick with 3 singles, and Jarid Huth with a double. Then, in the bottom of the 6th, Shawn Bellis came off the bench to lead off with a double for Last Laff. After a walk to Chris Miller and a sacrifice bunt, the Last Laff had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. Thats when pinch hitter Dave Craig stepped to the plate and drove in both runners to tie the game at 5. Chris Dietrich re-entered the game for Craig and stole 2nd base, putting himself in scoring position. Another pinch hitter, Keith Lehman, drove in Dietrich for the go-ahead run. Armstrong out-hit Last Laff 9-8 in the game. Chris Bellis came out of the bullpen in the 6th inning to get the win.
The Last Laff took a 2-1 lead in the series, winning Game 3 of the CLCS by a score of 9-4. The Last Laff posted 1 run in the first inning on 2 hits and an error, then plated 4 more in the second, putting together 5 hits in the inning. Armstrong chipped away at the lead, making the score 6-3 in the top of the sixth, when the Last Laff capitalized on 3 Armstrong errors and Mike Fleeger's 2-RBI pinch hit single to get 3 runs in the inning. Top hitters for Last Laff in the game were Rick Belles with 2 doubles and Doug Augustine and Chris Miller, each with 2 singles. For Armstrong, Keith Clark was 3 for 3 with a triple and 2 singles, Richie Toy had a double and a single, and Brad Bothell added a triple. Chris Bellis was the winning pitcher.
The Last Laff clinched the 2009 Chicora Area Softball League Championship with another hard fought, one run victory over Armstrong Beer. Down 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th inning, Rick Belles led off with a double for Last Laff. The next 2 batters walked, and Joe Callihan hit a 2-RBI double to left center to win the game. Top hitters for Last Laff were Jim Harmon with a triple and a single and Chris Bellis with a double and a single. Dave Cushey and Jarid Huth each doubled for Armstrong. Chris Bellis was the winning pitcher.
SEMI-FINALS
Elbo Room vs. Armstrong Beer
Elbo Room upset Armstrong Beer in Game 1 of this Semi-Final series, handing Armstrong just their 2nd loss of the 2009 season. Tim Dietrich was the winning pitcher holding Armstrong to just 4 runs while Elbo Room posted 14.
Armstrong bounced back and won Game 2 of this Semi-Final series 9-4. Jared Dunlap led Armstrong offensively with a homerun. Goose Johns pitched for the win.
Armstrong Beer brought the bats to Game 3 of the Semi-Finals, beating Elbo Room 12-4. Elbo Room opened the game with a 3-run homerun by Travis Trimbur in the top of the first inning. But Armstrong answered with 3 runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, including a 2-RBI single by Craig Witenski. Trimbur homered again in the 3rd inning, but that was all the scoring Elbo Room could produce. Jared Dunlap, Goose Johns, and Jarid Huth led the way for Armstrong, each hitting homeruns. Johns pitched for the win as well.
Worthington Market vs. Last Laff
Last Laff took a 1-0 lead in this Semi-Final series, beating Worthington Market 7-2. Buddy Gibson, Dave Craig, and Chris Dietrich each doubled and singled for Last Laff. Chad Cousins tripled and singled for Worthington. Chris Bellis picked up the win on the pitchers mound.
Game 2 of this series was shortened by rain in the top of the 6th inning, but since 5 innings had been completed, by ASA rules it is a complete game. Last Laff was on top 3-2 at the time of cancellation, so they will advance to the Championship series. Keith Lehman had 2 singles, one of which drove in 2 runs in the 4th inning. Andy Larimore drove Lehman in on a triple, providing the Last Laff's only other run. Brandon Goldinger started the game off with a solo homerun and Rich Cypher also hit a solo homer in the 4th for Worthington Market. Chris Bellis was the winning pitcher.
FIRST ROUND
VFW vs. Last Laff
The Last Laff defeated VFW in Game 1 of this series 10-4. Travis Bellis, Josh Behrens, and Doug Augustine each homered for Last Laff. Kolby Gregory homered for VFW. Gary Coe picked up the win, pitching for Last Laff.
Last Laff won Game 2 of the series, 15-5. Shawn Bellis, Rick Belles, Joe Callihan, Chris Dietrich, and Tyler Callihan all homered for Last Laff. Chris Bellis pitched for the win. Last Laff advances to the Semi-Finals against Worthington Market.
Ritzert's Retaining Walls vs. Armstrong Beer
Armstrong defeated Ritzert's in Game 1 of this series 14-2. Jared Dunlap homered for Armstrong and Goose Johns got the win on the pitcher's mound.
Armstrong knocked off Ritzert's in Game 2 by a score of 15-5. Rick Boltz homered for Armstrong. Justin Ellenberger homered for Ritzert's. Armstrong advances to the Semi-Finals against Elbo Room.
Jo-De Pizza vs. Elbo Room
Elbo Room took a 1-0 lead in this series by posting 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to erase a 5-1 deficit. The final score was 7-6. Winning pitcher was Billy Yusko.
Elbo room closed out the series with a 13-4 victory over Jo-De Pizza. Tim Dietrich was the winning pitcher for Elbo Room. Elbo Room advances to the Semi-Finals against Armstrong.
County Line vs. Worthington Market
Glen Kilgore hit a walk off ground rule double, driving in the winning run in the bottom of the 7th to beat County Line 6-5. Jimmy Stuchell homered for County Line. Dave Berry pitched for Worthington.
Worthington Market held off a late rally by County Line to win 9-8 to finish this series. Marty Gray homered for County Line. Bucky Johns got the win, pitching for Worthington. Worthington advances to the Semi-Finals against Last Laff.
