On August 2 the N.E.W. MSBL 2008 regualar season came to a end as all teams enjoyed a full day of baseball at Joannes stadium. In the first game saw the Kaukauna Islanders secure the #1 spot as they slipped past the Appleton Cubs 2-1. Game #2 featured the Outagamie Outlaws taking on the Bay Side Kewaunee Eagles which ended in seven innings as the Outlaws took charge from the first inning pounding out 35 hits. Finally in the night cap saw the Ashwaubenon A's falling to the Bay City Sturgeon 5-2.
A special thanks to Jeff Royle the owner and President of the Green Bay Bull Frogs for letting us use the field for this special day.
August 10th will be the first round of the 2008 single elimination playoffs which feature the #2 seed Appleton Cubs taking on the #7 seeded Eagles in Kewuanee. At Kaukauna will be a match up between the #6 seed Green Bay Wicked taking on the #3 seed Outagamie Outlaws and at Klipstine will be the battle of #4 vs #5 seed's as the Bay City Sturgeon take on the Ashwaubenon A's. Some good baseball will be played. Good Luck to all teams.
The NEW MSBL Board of Directors met on 11/12, 12/17 and 1/14 and agreed to several changes for the 2008 season. The league playoffs will expand from a single elimination to a double elimination format, with the championship round being a best of three series. The playoff dates are confirmed as the following three weekends in August: the 9th and 10th, the 16th and 17th, and the 23rd and 24th. Opening Day will be May 4th this year. The Appleton Cardinals officially changed their name to the Outagamie Outlaws and announced that their new team website is now available online. cmenuid=17&url=newmsbl&sid=729434951>here.
Joe Viau reports that his 15th trip to the national MSBL World Series tournament in Phoenix was a lot of fun. He organized two teams (involving players from 9 other MSBL leagues): a father/son team and a 55-plus team (both called Team America). The father/son team played 4 games and consisted of Joe and his son Jeremiah, Darryl Johnson and Dey (an exchange student from Korea), Mike Meyer and his son Luke, and players from other leagues. The leading hitters were Luke Meyer (.583) and James Solis from San Diego MSBL (.429). The 55-plus team played 6 games over 4 days. The leading hitters were Darryl Johnson (.478) and Gene Sinclair from Terre Haute MSBL (.476). Joe Viau also added a hit and five walks and says that the Phoenix MSBL World Series is the largest tournament of its type in the US, taking place over three weeks with over 1000 games played.
The NEW MSBL Board of Directors met on 9/24 and held elections for the following offices: Jeff Jarvi was elected League President; Joe Vaiu was elected Vice President; and Darryl Johnson was elected Treasurer. In addition to Johnson, two other new board members were elected to one-year terms: Raoul Traeg and Tom Wilkins. After further discussion, the league opted to continue unrestricted free agency for the 2008 season. We play baseball the old fashioned way, with wood bats, blood, sweat and tears (except everyone knows there's no crying in baseball). Check out the game action shots in the Photo Album. As Ernie Banks used to say, "It's a beautiful day! Let's play two!"
