North coast Athletics close out summer with a bang.
August 22, 2007 The North Coast Athletics 16 and under baseball team closed out the summer season in Sunnyvale for the United States Specialty Sports Association 16 and under "Last Stop Tourney" on Saturday and sunday July 21 and 22.
The Athletics completed a successful tournament run, battling the 11-team tounament field for a second-place finish.

"Our team represented the North Coast in a very special way" said Manager Mike James. "They never lost their cool, played smart and together as a team, with class and respect. I would like to thank the parents for allowing us this experience as well as Coaches Robert Valador, Mike Casey Jerry Ball and Alonzo Llamas.

The North Coast Athletics would like to thank the following sponsors and friends who helped make this season possible. Thanks to Andy Johnston, Mendo Realty, Rossi's Building Materials, Holmes Lumber, Dolphin Isle Marina. North Coast Plumbing, Sport Chrysler Jeep Dodge, Mike Casey construction, Terry Casey, Circa, Savings Bank of Mendocino County, Redwood Investments, Out of this World, Fort Bragg Rotary, Fort Bragg Kiwanis, Nancy at Teamwork and Bart Buckner for help on the website.

    Game #1 Saturday 8:00 am N.C.Athletics 11 Alameda Sharks 1

Tyler Vichi would team up with catcher Alex Strauss to complete a one-hit (4IP, 6K, 2BB) victory as the Athletics would 10- run the Sharks in five innings. North Coast happily applied pressure on the Sharks by executing hit and run, bunt and productive hitting as the Athletics would start the tournament off with confidence.

Elijio Duran led the Athletics offense with a 3x3 performance that included two runs scored and an RBI double. Vince Longo finished 2x3 with three RBIs and a run scored, Vichi added two RBIs and a run scored off two hits, Alfredo Huerta finished a perfect 2x2 and scored two runs, Guy Casey went 2x3 with an RBI and a run scored, Strauss scored two runs off a base hit and a walk, Ryan Stevens knocked in two runs, while Jose Huerta and Tomas Sanchez eash scored a run in the victory for the Athletics.

    Game #2 Saturday 10:00 AM Diamond Dawgs 7, N.C. Athletics 2

The Athletics battled the Silicon Valley Diamond Dawgs to a 2-1 deficit heading into the fifth inning. Duran answered with a solo homerun shot to right-center field, but the Diamond Dawgs held on for the 7-2 win. Kevin Llamas came in for one inning of work on the mound for the Athletics, shutting down the heart of the Diamond Dawgs lineup in order.
Duran paced the Athletics offense once again after driving in both scores, finishing 2x3 with a homerun and a run scored. Vichi and Sanchez each added two hits(2x2), while Strauss added a base hit and a walk to round out the North Coast's attack.

With the rest of the tournament field still unsettled, North Coast's seeding for the remaining tournament schedule was up in the air. The single elimination round began at 9:00 pm on Saturday for the six to 11 seeds, whereas the top five seeds kicked things off on Sunday morning. After finishing the first two games with a 1-1 record and allowing just eight runs, the Athletics earned the fourth seed, setting up an 8:00 am Sunday matchup against the San Jose Indians.

    Game #3 Sunday 8:00 am N.C. Athletics 8, San Jose Indians 6

North Coast jumped all over San Jose after racing out to an 8-0 lead, but the Indians battled until the final inning of play. Vichi and Strauss teamed up once again from the mound to start off the game, while Duran closed the door shut to notch the save. With the tying run at the plate, Duran sealed the deal with three straight curveballs to earn the victory for North Coast.

Vichi finished five strong innings of work, allowing just two hits and two walks to pick up the win. Longo ignited the Athletics offense after driving three RBIs and scoring a run, while Stevens added two RBIs. Duran finished a perfect 1x1, drawing two walks, scoring two runs and driving in an RBI, Sanchez added a base hit, a walk and two runs scored, Llamas finished 2x2 with an RBI, while Strauss rounded out the offense by scoring two runs in the win.

    Game #4 Sunday 12:10 PM N.C. Athletics 3 Kali Baseball 2

North Coast faced a stiff test facing off against Kali Baseball after the San Jose squad elimnated last year's defending champion. Thirteen-year old Llamas took the mound to start off this semi-final matchup, finishing with a three-hit gem over 5 effective innings of work. Llamas kept Kali Baseball off balance, striking out six batters to lead North Coast into the championship match.

Casey came in for relief and closed the door shut to pick up the save. Casey also proved to be very effective at the plate as well after finishing 2x2 with a double and a run scored. Vichi contributed a 2x3 performance that included a double and an RBI, Huerta was a perfect 1x1 with a walk and a run scored, Strauss added a run, while Longo rounded out the offfense with an RBI.

Game #5 Sunday, Championship: Vallejo Black Socks 9, N.C.Athletics 1

The Athletics faced a solid unbeaten opponent who just finshed their semi final game defeating the Diablo Valley Patriots. Longo and Strauss got things rolling for North Coast. The Atletics advanced runners into scoring position every inning, as well as loading the bases on two separate occasions, but the North Coast team was unable to capitalize off those opportunities.
The North Coast Athletics played well in very hostile conditions, but were unable to come away with the win. The game was much closer than the final score indicates, but the Athletics closed out a successful tournament run nonetheless.
Longo led North coast's offense with a 2x2 performance that included and RBI adn a walk. Duran finished 1x1 with two walks. Huerta went a perfect 2x2 while Strauss rounded out the offense with a run scored.

    2007 NORTH COAST ATHLETICS
    16U TRAVELING BASEBALL TEAM

Baseball is still alive it seems for the 2007 North Coast Athletics 16u season. (although enrollment is down for Little League, in big cities as well as small towns)

The team was created by myself, manager Mike James, and Bud Melia is 2005 when we realized that our kids would not get enough experience to keep up with other players and teams who were centurally located and could play enough baseball to develop their skills at a modern pace.

We have accomplished most of our mission graduating: Everett James (my son, FBHS Junior), Richard Tamborini (FBHS Senior), Cody Raudio (FBHS Senior), Lance Fabian (MHS Graduate), Steven Baumeister (FBHS Graduate), Aldeberta Huerta (FBHS Senior), Derek Shea (FBHS Senior), Anthony Ruano (FBHS Senior), Taylor Taff (MHS Senior), Alex Lemmon (FBHS Junior), Abraham Vargas-Rodriguez (FBHS Junior), Steven Young, Jr. (FBHS Senior), Nick Rawlins (MHS Junior), to a higher age bracket. The 16U age bracket is crucial because the fundamentals of baseball are so advanced at this time.

Returning players for the 2007 season are: Tony Melia (MHS Junior), Elliot Hee (MHS Junior), Ryan Stevens (MHS Junior), Matt Freitas (FBHS Junior), Elijio Duran (FBHS Sophomore), Tomas Sanchez (FBHS Sophomore), Antonio Renteria (FBHS Sophomore). In our two years of existence, we have played in Santa Clara, Marin, Elk Grove, Woodland, and of course, qualified and traveled to Florida for the 2006 USSSA 16U World Series last year. We were able to achieve a USSSA World Series qualifying championship at Mendocino High School with Petaluma, Willits and the North Coast Athletics in our first year, keeping the game alive, thanks to all the support we received.

HISTORY OF THE SALMON RESTORATION ASSOCIATION

The Salmon Restoration Association (SRA), a non-profit corporation, was formed in 1970 by public-spirited people of the Fort Bragg and Mendocino Coast area who had become justifiably concerned at the steady deterioration of salmon runs off our North Coast and the consequent decline in the catch by both sport and commercial fishermen. Today our Board of Directors consists of anglers, local business people, retirees, biologists, artists, environmentalists, journalists and building contractors.
The goal of the SRA is to restore the once great salmon runs to the numbers reported at the turn of the century and to educate the public about the biological, social and economical benefits salmon play in our communities. This goal is accomplished by maintaining a spawning and rearing facility for King (Chinook) salmon on the Eel River at Hollow Tree Creek and educating the public through the press and at public events. Salmon Restoration Association efforts are funded by public donations, contributions from commercial and sport fishing interests, grants for the California Department of Fish and Game and the proceeds from our annual fundraiser, the “World’s Largest Salmon BBQ”.
The BBQ is put on through the efforts of service clubs and fraternal organizations, community churches, the Salmon Troller’s Marketing Association, Noyo Women for Fisheries, local fish processors and many businesses and citizens of the greater Fort Bragg area.

The BBQ will be held on July 7and SRA will maintain the same price for tickets as last year, $20.00.

The Athletics searching for some sunshine in Sunnyvale
North Coast Athletics' Anthony Ruano scorched a deep home run just as the dazzling fireworks display lit up the sky during the July 1 game against the Oakley Falcons. Nancy James photo.

The North Coast Athletics traveled to the Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale, Calif., on July 1 for a festive weekend of baseball. With the Fourth of July right around the corner, the team was shooting to make some serious noise before heading home.

The Athletics walked away with one victory in four games after playing against stiff competition. Although the results may not appear favorable, the team gained valuable experience after competing under difficult road conditions.

The players traveled for four and a half hours, but there was no time to rest as they were set to take on the San Leandro Washington Manor Dodgers for their first game shortly after arriving.

Despite a decent offensive output, the Athletics were unable to keep pace, losing the opener 12-4. The long travel definitely affected the team, contributing to the Athletics' 11 errors.

Several Athletics finished with fine performances at the plate, led by Matt Freitas who went 2-3, with two runs, two RBIs, and a holiday home run blast. Everett James also collected two hits, while Anthony Ruano, Al Huerta and Steven Young drove in a run apiece.

There was no time to rest or review what had just happened because the Athletics were scheduled to take the field again shortly after their first game.

North Coast was set to square off against the Oakley Falcons for game two. The Falcons also lost their opening game, so both sides were eager to earn a mark in the win column.

The Athletics got off to a shaky start and were never able to recover, losing to the Falcons by a final of 13-3. The evening featured a slew of dazzling fireworks and the Athletics' Anthony Ruano utilized the patriotic backdrop for his home run smash in the second inning.

Everett James accounted for the other two Athletics' scores after drilling a two-run shot deep over the center field fence. James finished 2-3, with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Matt Freitas rounded out the Athletics' attack with two hits, a stolen base, and one run.

Even though the team had some very bright moments, they were unable to come away with a victory. The ball did not bounce their way all day, so the Athletics were hopeful that Sunday would provide a more pleasurable result.

Game three started bright and early at 8 a.m., as North Coast took on Marin Tribe. The Athletics must be a morning team because they played their best baseball all weekend after winning by a final of 9-5.

Unlike the first two games of the event, the Athletics played solid defense. A pitcher's confidence can often rest with the defense that backs him up.

Pitchers Ryan Stevens and Eli Duran took advantage of the strong play behind them, keeping the Tribe off-balance from start to finish.

The Athletics' bats continued to sizzle, led by Tomas Sanchez who finished with two hits, two runs, a stolen base, and three RBIs. Both pitchers did well on the mound and at the plate as Duran chipped in with two hits and two runs, while Stevens finished a perfect 2-2, with a stolen base and an RBI. James added to the offensive surge with two RBIs, while Ruano scored twice during Sunday's victory.

The Athletics had the rest of the day and evening to celebrate their fine performance, but the team was far from finished as they eyed a rematch with the San Leandro Dodgers the next day. The game would start bright and early once again and the Athletics were hopeful to turn things around against the Dodgers.

However, the Athletics were unable to maintain their momentum, losing to the Dodgers 8-1. North Coast could not take advantage of their scoring opportunities after stranding nine base runners.

Despite coming home with three tough losses, Head Coach Mike James found a lot of positives to build on. The players will continue to practice and work hard to hone their skills.

The team is looking forward to traveling to Kissimmee, Fla., on July 17 to have fun in the sun playing ball and enjoying their summer vacation.

The North Coast Athletics 16 and under team will be holding tryouts on July 30 at Fort Bragg High School's Patton Field from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, please call Head Coach Mike James at 961-0856.

The Athletics would travel 4 -1/2 hours on Saturday to the Twin Creeks
Sports Complex in Sunnyvale California to play the Dodgers of San Leandro
in game 1. Eli Duran would start on the mound pitching a good game but
unfortunately the road trip would get the best of the Athletics with their
first 9 of 10 batter would be retired and the defense would commit 11
errors! Matt Freitas and Everett James would single with Steven Young and
Anthony Ruano each earning RBI singles in the fourth inning. Matt Freitas
would hit a 2 run home run with Tomas Sanchez on base, but the A's would
    end on the 8-run rule.

    STATS: Freitas: 2x3, HR, 2R, 2 RBI's

    OAKLEY FALCONS - 13
    NORTH COAST ATHLETICS - 3

The A's would face a hungry Falcon team coming off a tough 5-3 loss vs. the
Marin Tribe. Anthony Ruano would give up 4 hits, BB, 2K, in the first
inning and would be unable to get out of the second with a double play ball
once again mishandled, leaving the bases loaded for Everett James. James
would have great off-speed stuff but with a couple errors the Falcons would
not be stopped. Ruano would hit a solo homerun in the 2nd just as the grand
finale fireworks were going off, and James would follow with a laser 2 run
blast over the center field fence after Freitas singled. Al Huerta would
shut the Falcons down, retiring the side in the 4th and allowing no runs in
    the 5th (9BF, 4k, HB, 2 hits)

against a scrappy Tribe team. Ryan Stevens would start on the mound

    SAN LEANDRO DODGERS - 8
    NORTH COAST ATHLETICS - 1

Everett James would pitch a good game keeping the Dodgers off balance with
catcher Steven Young working hard chasing James's ball in the dirt, and
feeding James to tag a runner trying to score at the plate early as well as
throwing a runner out at 2nd base. The A's would show signs of fatigue and
could not take advantage of bases loaded and 9 runners left on base. 4
errors would be costly as the A's let the big game slip away. The A's did
not realize they could beat the Dodgers until it was too late. Catcher
Steven Young caught error-free all 4 games as well as being hit 3 times
while batting. Antonio Renteria and Abe Vargas would give him a break on
the bases as a courtesy runner. The Athletics batted and will be working on
playing competitive 7-inning baseball like they are capable of.

    Cardinals are very Athletic
Mendocino's Tony Melia is pitching well for the North Coast Athletics and is gearing up for next season.

The North Coast Athletics participated in the AAU Championship in Woodland, Calif. on June 17 and 18.

The Athletics played three games over the course of the weekend and Manager Mike James was pleased with his team's continual improvement.

The Athletics played against Rodeo Balz Out for their first game of the event. North Coast was up for the challenge and starting pitcher Everett James came out firing the moment he took the mound.

The Athletics held Rodeo scoreless through the first four innings of play after James was able to keep the opposition in check. The Athletics' defense helped him secure the shutout after making some dazzling plays in the field.

Shortstop Matt Freitas turned a 6-4-3 double play with Elliot Hee and Derek Shea, while Anthony Ruano tracked down a deep fly ball to limit Rodeo's chances early on.

Despite racking up four hits and drawing four walks through the first four innings, Rodeo was unable to get on the scoreboard.

The Athletics finally broke the scoreless battle after Tony Melia scored the go ahead run. Steven Young's RBI double scored Melia to put North Coast up 1-0.

Unfortunately, the Athletics appeared to wear down in the later innings with the temperatures reaching as high as 110 degrees. Immediately after James was relieved from the mound, the Athletics seemed to be out of sync.

Rodeo Balz Out took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning and never looked back as the team regained its confidence against the bullpen.

Rodeo added two runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh to finish off the contest with an 11-1 victory.

There was no time to think about how the game got away because the Athletics found themselves back on the field minutes after finishing up their first game.

The team was disappointed with how the first game ended, so it would be interesting to see how the players would respond for their next match.

In the second game of the tournament, the Athletics took on the Shingle Springs Bruins. North Coast looked to turn things around, but was unable to break through as the Bruins finished on top with a 3-1 victory.

Defense was the story of this game as the Athletics gave up all three runs off of defensive miscues. Starting pitcher Tony Melia put together five strong innings, striking out three batters in the process, but the Athletics could not make several key plays on defense, allowing the Bruins to steal the game in the end.

Ryan Stevens scored the lone run for North Coast after ripping a triple to the gap. Eli Duran executed a textbook squeeze play to score Stevens from third, but the Athletics could not mount another attack for the rest of the game.

The Athletics arrived at the field bright and early the next morning to play their third and final game of the tournament, hopeful that the result would not duplicate Saturday's scores.

Squaring off against the Sacramento Heat, the North Coast Athletics lost the nail-biter by the final score of 5-4. The Athletics could not catch a break all weekend as the team came home without a victory.

Manager James once again pointed to the defense as the primary factor for the outcome of the game. The Athletics' pitchers pitched well once again and the offense finally came to life, but the defense was unable to convert on several key plays and enabled the opposition to capitalize off of their mistakes.

Despite leaving Woodland without a victory, Manager James was pleased with the team's performance and the players' competitive spirit.

The team had a chance to win every game minus a few tough plays here and there. The Athletics continued to compete and support one another and that is exactly what Coach James was hoping to see. Good luck this weekend down in the Bay Area.

    USSSA-16U State Championship
Over Memorial Day weekend, the North Coast Athletics competed in the USSSA-16U State Championship Tourney at Elk Grove High School.

The tournament would feature five games in two days, a grueling schedule to say the least.

For the first game, the Athletics would face a very tough Tri-Valley Titan team from Livermore, Calif., losing to the Titans by a final of 7-0. The tournament did not start the way the team hoped, but the Athletics never gave up and continued to compete.

The Athletics fared much better in the second game by bouncing back with an 11-2 victory over Marin Tribe. The Athletics jumped out to an early 2-0 lead following Elliot Hee's two run single in the first inning. The whole team remained hot all game finishing off the contest with a balanced attack.

Hee finished the game 2-2 with two runs scored and four RBIs, Derek Shea went 3-3, Abraham Vargas finished 1-2 with a double and four RBIs, and Tony Melia rounded out the attack going 2-3 with two runs scored.

The third game never played out as the Athletics won the contest following a forfeit.

Game four did not turn out as well as the Athletics lost 9-0 in a rematch with the Titans. The Athletics could not catch a break after several unfortunate calls put the game out of reach. The Titans ripped off all nine runs in the third inning after capitalizing off the umpire's miscues.

The fifth and final game against Marin Tribe ended with the Athletics being narrowly edged by a final score of 3-2.

A tough fifth inning put the Tribe ahead 3-0. The Athletics responded right back when both Matt Freitas and Melia walked to get on base, setting up Richard Tamborini's two run double to cut the lead down to one.

Despite a late rally in the final inning of play, the Tribe held on for the 3-2 victory.

The Athletics gave everything they had all weekend and put together some solid performances to build on.

    GAME #4

    Titans 9 Athletics 0 (5 innings)

Steven Young would take the mound and shut the Titans out for 2 innings. A 9 run 3rd inning made possible by a couple of unfortunate calls early in the inning which turned into a long 3rd which finally ended with one pitch form Matt Freitas. The Athletics settled down making some great plays on defense, but could not get the ball to fall against a stingy Titan defense. Matt Freitas would pitch 2 scoreless innings, walking 2 and allowing 2 hits.

    Stats:

    Al Huerta: 1x2

    Ryan Stevens: 1x2

    _____________________________________________________________________
    - Matt Pollock took a no-hitter into the seventh inning to lead the Marin Tribe, a 16-and-under travel team, to a 3-2 win over the North Coast Athletics in the semifinals of the USSSA/Miken State Championship. Kellen Porter doubled twice and Logan Edwards
had a clutch pinch-hit RBI. The Tribe fell to the Tri-Valley Titans in the final.
    GAME #5

    Tribe 3 Athletics 2

After an exhausting morning, the Athletics would have to find some energy as the Tribe led off the game with a double off of pitcher Anthony Ruano, who was called upon to battle the Tribe once again due to the shortage of available pitching. Ruano would settle down, and the defense would help keep the game close until the 5th inning.

With one out in the 5th, a double, error, and a hit batter, gave the Tribe a 3-0 lead.

Eli Duran would relieve Ruano and would shut the Tribe down with an unassisted double play from Elliot Hee, runners thrown out at 2nd and 3rd base (on a slow curve) by Abraham Vargas, as well as other great efforts from the battle tested Athletics.

Matt Freitas and Tony Melia would walk, setting up a 2 RBI double blasted by Richard Tamborini: 3-2 Tribe. The game-tying hit in the bottom of the 7th inning would be fielded, ending the Athletics hard working battle.

    Stats:

    Richard Tamborini: 1x3, 2B, 2RBI’s

There was a lot of positive things to learn from this tournament. It takes very strong players to play 4-5 games in 2 days, and I believe we will get stronger.

Our home tournament is to be held this weekend at Fort Bragg and Mendocino High Schools, pending team applications.

North Coast Athletics Qualify For USSSA 16U Sophomore AAA World Series in Florida
May 14, 2006 Last year the 2005 North Coast athletics were 2nd in Northern California in USSA points and 32nd in the nation. the team was 3-3 in their age division and competed with only three 16 year old players on the roster in a 16 and under age bracket. This year, 12 players return: Everett James, Tony Melia, Steven Young, cody Raudio, Anthonly Ruano, Al Huerta, Derek Shea, Richard Tamborini, Elliot Hee, Matt Freitas, Alex Lemmon, and Ryan stevens. Abraham Vargas will join the team at 16 years old, as a catcher.

Seven players will practice with the team as practice players, preparing for next season and possibly bein activated for games if any of the original thirteen players are unable to play. Tyler Vichi, Eli Duran, Tomas Sanchez, Antonio Renteria, Anthony Caito, Cuko Huerta, and Chris Braga will help keep the Athletics program going.

Manager Mike James and coaches Mike pollard, Bud Melia, Wes Hee, John Baumeister, and robert Valador are looking forward to coaching this year and realize what a special opportunity this is for these kids to learn, grow, and have fun at such a high level of competition. Last year in 2005, the support was so great it created a USSSA World Series qualifying team in its first year of existence. In 2006, the North Coast Athletics will compete in the World Series and will need a lot of support to make the dream happen.

The team is made up of players from around the Mendocino Coast
mostly from Fort Bragg and Mendocino high schools. Coach Bud Melia and James say that the purpose of forming the traveling team is to continue baseball into the summer and improve the level of play in the high school program. They have joined the United States Specialty Sports Association and will be playing in four tournaments, as well as hosting one during the summer season.

The North Coast Athletics 16 and under traveling baseball team headed to Woodland for their first tournament of the season Friday, May 27,2005..

They played four games and won 1 of 4 in two days. It was not an auspicious showing for the Athletics, playing against larger, more practiced teams.

This was the first time out and the first season for these young players and with only three days of practice, the Athletics still showed a lot of heart on the field.

Very few players on the coast have played four games in two days against the best teams in the state, said team manager Mike James.

This weekend the Athletics will travel to Marin County for their next round of play on Saturday, June 4

In the U.S.S.S.A. State Championship Tournament in Woodland, May 27, the Athletics beat the Woodland Pioneers, 6-5.

It was a hard fought game with the Athletics coming from behind, 5-0, to take the win.

The team lost to San Jose, 6-1, with Everett James pitching a great game, going the distance against the state champions.

The Athletics next game will be held Saturday, June 11 in Elk Grove.

North Coast Athletics grab the wooden bats in Woodland
The North Coast Athletics Traveling Baseball Team headed to Woodland on Saturday, braving the heat to play in a wood-bat tournament. They took to the field against three tough teams, including Junior Olympic qualifying team, the Nor Cal Pirates.

The Athletics started the day out on Saturday against the SYB Titans from the East Bay. The Athletics were unable to generate any offense against the Titans in their disappointing 11-0 loss.

With the officials and the Titans rolling against them, the As never had a chance. Catcher Steven Young had some great plays, throwing two runners out on the bases and tagging two out at the plate.

In game two that day, the As took to the field against another Bay Area team, the Nor Cal Pirates. The Pirates advanced to the Junior Olympics qualifier in Florida this year and are a very good team.

Tony Melia had the only hit of the game as, once again, the As pitchers were forced to throw down the middle.

The Athletics were shut-out, 10-0, for only the third time out of 14 games this season.

On Sunday, Steven Baumeister pitched four strong innings with Cody Raudio coming in to relieve against a tough Pleasant Valley Eagles team.

Taylor Taff hit a big two-out double with the bases loaded, driving in Richard Tamborini and Ryan Stevens who was pinch-running for Young.
Tamborini also blasted a double but didnt score on the hit. Al Huerta made a spectacular, over-the-shoulder catch at shortstop. The Athletics were unable to complete the victory, falling to the Eagles by one, 3-2.

As tough as these games were, the team really stuck together, said Coach Mike James. Most of these kids have been playing baseball a long time this year because they also played for the high school. Theyve put in a lot of miles and are tired.

Athletics baseball will host the North Coast Athletics Showdown Baseball Tournament this weekend on Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17. There are two out of town teams committed and two more teams pending.

Athletics host first annual baseball tournament
Three teams showed up last Saturday in Mendocino for the first annual North Coast 16 and under Showdown Baseball Tournament.

Joining the hosting North Coast Athletics were the Barrys Extreme Sluggers from Willits and the P-Town out of Petaluma. The teams battled it out on the field for five games Saturday and Sunday with the Athletics taking home the championship trophy after beating the Sluggers 6-0 in the final game.

The Athletics took the mound against the Sluggers in game one on Saturday. It was a rough start in the tournament for the unfortunate Willits team as the Athletics handed them their heads in the 20-0 North Coast win.

The game started out with the Sluggers from Willits playing a tough three innings against the Athletics, with seasoned veteran Steven Baumeister on the mound. The fourth and fifth innings would prove to be the worst for the Sluggers, as the As scored six runs in the fourth inning, 11 runs in the fifth inning. The Willits pitchers walked 13 and hit three batters.

Anthony Ruano pitched two strong innings. The big play was when Al (Willie Mays) Huerta ran down a gap hit, threw to Baumeister who threw to Nick Rawlings at the plate in the first inning, helping to preserve the shutout. With a few key injuries to Willits players, they were unable to gain any momentum.

Baumeister led the As batting, going 3x3, 2B, BB, HBP and scoring three runs. Tony Melia followed, going 2x2, 2 BB and one run. Derek Shea was 1x2, 1 sacrifice, 1BB and a run.

For Willits, Cole Alavezos led the offense, going 2x4 with a double, while Jason Whitby was 1x2.

The Extreme Sluggers rebounded in game two, beating the P-Town Players, 13-10. P-Town had beat the Athletics in the Marin tournament earlier this year, 9-8.

Willits Jason Whitby pitched seven innings, throwing 7Ks, 3BB, 7R, 4ER. Johnathan Carr relieved Whitby for the last two innings, holding P-Town at bay and getting the win.

In game three the Athletics hit the field for the second time that day, beating the P-Town 7-2. Tony Melia, from Mendocino pitched a complete game only allowing seven hits. Melia helped his own cause, leading the As hitting with 3x4, 2HR, 2B, 3RBI and scoring three runs.

Richard Tamborini from Fort Bragg made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch at first base to help complete the victory.

On Sunday, the Mendocino High School baseball diamond rang with the crack of the bat once again as the three teams vied for a championship spot.

Barrys Extreme Sluggers took on the P-Town Players in game four. Willits Arron Campbell hustled to score the winning run on a pass ball toppling P-Town by only one, 7-6. Petaluma never gave up, coming back to tie the game after being down, 6-2.

The players were a class-act baseball team, said Coach Mike James. They will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

The win sent the Sluggers into the championship game against the undefeated Athletics that afternoon. In game five the As beat the Willits team again, this time 6-0. Everett James led from the mound, pitching a complete game and allowing only one hit while striking out seven.

With catchers, Steven Young and Rawlings and a very tight defense, the As would combine for a one-hit shutout against a tough rebounding Willits team.

With Willits threatening to score in the sixth inning, Tamborini laid out at first base, missing an Alavezos hit. Matt Freitas came from second base and threw a perfect feed to pitcher James who was covering first base to get the out.

Willits tried to put the ball in play, but with center fielder, Alex Lemmon tracking down two gap hits, and a stingy Athletics defense, the Sluggers couldnt gain the momentum.

Tournament MVP, Melia, led the hitting, going 2x2 with 2B, BB, HP, 2RBI and a run. Elliot Hee went 2x2, RBI and a run, Baumeister was 1x2 with 2BB and a run. Huerta, Lemmon, Cody Raudio and Freitas all scored runs.

All-tournament players for the North Coast Athletics were James, Tamborini and Baumiester.

For Willits they were Matt Shlegel, Alavezos, Dustin Caldwell and Campbell. For the P-Town the selected players were Wiley Buck, Taylor Pasion and Taylor Young.
