 NICK PAVIA
RCBC 17U SQUAD PLAYING WELL IN ATLANTA

It's one of the biggest sandlot baseball tournaments in America.....the East Cobb weeklong event in Atlanta, George.   Close to 200 teams are entered in this tourney. this is a showcase that attracts numerous college recruiters nationwide as well as professional scouts from all 30 major league teams.  Coach Nick DeFendis knows this event can help his players get to the next level.  And...the RCBC 17U entry has won two of its three games played so far.  RCBC got off to a fine start with a 7-2 victory over a Georgia opponent.  Nick Pavia  tossed four scoreless innings to get the victory.  The attack was led by J.J. Franco who was on base four times while scoring twice and stealing a pair of bases.  Joe Geloso added three hits.
The second win came against a team from Dallas, Texas, by a 7-4 score.  Outfileder Jimmy Brennan, who stole the show in Troy, New York, kept up his star-studded play.  The centerfielder from Suffern, H.S. belted a grandslam.  It's his eventh homer in a week of tournament play.  Pavia added an RBI double.  The win went to reliever Matt DePaolo of Christian Brothers H.S.
RCBC will be in Atlanta until Monday, July 14th.  We'll continue to update their progress.

                                                   Richmond County Baseball Club
                                                 KING OF THE NINE-YEAR-OLDS

Who are the Nine-Year-Old Cal Ripken Baseball Champions of New York State?????  Look no further than the Richmond County Youth Complex on Travis Avenue.  The Championship Trophy belongs to the Richmond County Baseball Club, managed by George Quinn and coaches, Allen Lauro and Dave Filimon.  The Nine Year Olds clinched the 2008 Metro New York State Championship for their age group with a 2-1 victory over Staten Island rival Robert Curatolo Rangers.  It was a thrilling game that saw Richmond County break the 1-all tie in the sixth inning when Lorenzo Quinn drew a walk; and got sacrificed to second.  Lorenzo advanced to third on a wild-pitch and scored on a fielder's choice.  The win went to reliever Daniel DiGiorgio who tossed 1-and 1/3 innings.  Daniel also drove in the first-run with a sacrifice fly.  Starting pitcher Anthony Prato pitched hitless ball in his 4-and 2/3 innings of work.  The victory gave RCBC an overall eye-popping record of 36-5 for an unbelievable .878 winning percentage, they have scored 484 runs and given up 171 runs in 41 games!  RCBC now travels to Hamilton, New Jersey to begin Regional Play against Northwest Pennsylvania.  Coach Quinn says he's had the perfect ingredients for a great team this year. "The kids are hard-workers who learn quickly",and the coaches have tremendous patience says Quinn.  "The kids and the parents have bought into our system leading to a perfect chemistry all around."
It took four earlier victories for RCBC to reach the title game.  In the semi-final contest, the Nine-Year-Olds defeated PlainEdge East, Long Island, by a 9-3 margin.  The winning pitcher was Rick DeVito and the hitting star was Frank Savino who had a pair of hits and three RBI's.  In the Pool Play Games, Richmond County beat their three opponents by a combined 35-9 count.  The winning pitchers were Prato, DeVito and Francis Perry.  Some of the hitting stars in those wins were Nick Battaglia, Anthony Maisano and Prato.

BOBBY LANIGAN:  RCBC's FIRST DRAFTED PLAYER!!!!

Richmond County Baseball Club has enjoyed steady progress since becoming an organization in 2004.  RCBC President Nick DeFendis has seen the organization steadily grow each year since he founded it.  A large number of players who have been part of RCBC have had successful high school careers and many have moved to the next level to get scholarships and play College Baseball.  The next step on the RCBC growth chart was to see one of its alumni drafted.  The wait has ended.   Pitcher BOBBY LANIGAN was taken in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft by the Minnesota Twins.
The tall righthander from Staten Island was selected in the third round of the draft, the 92nd overall player chosen.  Lanigan was gaining velocity towards this moment since 2005
when the righthander pitched Moore Catholic to the CHSAA Championship.  That summer saw Lanigan become the ace pitcher for Coach DeFendis' RCBC Cardinals and DeFendis says the righthander accelerated his progress even more. "We were playing a tournament in Atlanta, Georgia," said DeFendis, "and Lanigan was so impressive that two of the top baseball colleges in the nation, Texas and North Carolina, tried to recruit him. That's when I knew that RCBC had someone special."  However, Texas and N-C were too late as Lanigan had committed to Adelphi University where he became a three-time All-Conference pitcher, while setting the Panther career strikeout record and compiling an overall ERA of 2.51.  Lanigan is the first Adelphi University player drafted in 15 years.
DeFendis says he expects RCBC to continue growing into one of the biggest impact organizations on the East Coast. "We are developing more and more players that are becoming stars on their high school teams and advancing to the college level," says DeFendis.  "We expect Lanigan to be  the first of a number of RCBC players who will get a chance at playing pro-ball."
