Savages Football Club caters for non professional football players of all ages from 4 years old to 60 years old and was established in 1882 which makes it the oldest football club in South Africa. The Club is celebrating its 126th Anniversary this year. Savages is also the biggest football club in the Kwa Zulu Natal Midlands area and one of the biggest in Natal with 6 senior sides and 22 junior sides participating in the leagues.
A Short History
Savages Football Club originated from the club of the same name in England. Established in 1882 by immigrants from England, the name remained the Savage Football Club until the early 1900’s when it was altered to the Savage(s) Football Club. The original colours were black shirts, knickers and stockings with a white shield and assegai on the breast pocket. The first recorded match was on August 29 1882.
Not much is known about the very early days of the club as records unfortunately haven’t been kept or passed on from the early years. Photos of Savages teams from as far back as 1906 are on display inside the MDFA offices. The official club colours were changed to royal blue shirts, white shorts and red socks in the early 1900's. Variations of blue, red and white continue to be worn by Savages football teams today.
The club participated as a member of the Maritzburg District Football Association (MDFA), affiliated to the Natal Football Association (NFA) in recent history until the NFA’s demise in 1993 when all amateur football in Natal became integrated under the South African Football Association (SAFA). Since 1993 the MDFA has been affiliated to SAFA’s Natal Midlands Football Association (NMFA). The last 12 to 15 years have been the most successful in the known history of the club with the following results having been achieved:
1987 NFA Natal League and League Cup Winners (1st MDFA club to do the double), Promotion to Natal Premier League
1991 NFA Natal League Winners, NFA Champion of Champion Winners
1993 NFA Natal Premier League Winners (1st team), Premier Reserve League Winners (2nd team)
1994 NMFA NMFA Smirnoff League Winners, NATIONAL Smirnoff League Cup Winners, Promotion to NSL 3rd Division
1995 NSL 1st Team NSL 3rd Division - Runners up
MDFA 2nd Team - 1st Division Winners, 1st Division Cup Winners, Jackson Cup Winners, Champion of Champions Winners
1996 MDFA 2nd Team 1st Division Cup Winners
1997 MDFA 2nd Team 1st Division Winners, 1st Division Cup Winners
1998 MDFA Masters 1st Division Winners, 1st Divison Cup Winners, Champion of Champions Winners
The club is now 126 years old and celebrated its centenary in 1982 by winning the Natal League Cup for the first time in the club’s history. The encouragement of junior football began in 1946 through the efforts of the late Claude Forsyth and his sons, as well as Dudley Drury, Bill Johnson and Bertie Howard. This policy has continued to present day, with Savages having one of the largest junior sections belonging to the MDFA, as well as the largest senior sections in Pietermaritzburg, with 6 teams representing the club in the NSL 2nd division and MDFA league.
WHY SHOULD KIDS PLAY SOCCER?
Because it is a team sport, participating in soccer teaches a child discipline, communication skills, comradery, leadership, teamwork, etc.
It also teaches body co-ordination more than any other sporting type. It is a known fact that children who plays soccer excel more in other sporting types than children who don’t.
Playing for a soccer club improves a child's soccer skills in general as both coaching and exposure to the game is of a more professional standard opposed to what is offered at schools.
