Seals College Players Earn Honors

December 11, 2007
Seals players; Matt Werakso, Ryan Overdevest, Anton (Alex) Peterlin, Chris Rodd, and Victor Cortez, receive College honors for their 2007 season.  Midfielder/Forward Stephen Cordova lead the California Community College Coast Conference in goals, and fourth on overall points in California.   Defender Chris Brown competes for the National Championship in a Semi-final this Friday (Dec. 14).

The Gulf Southern Conference named Christian Brothers' senior midfielder Matt Werakso to the conference First Team. Werakso was a First-Team selection last season, and a unanimous choice for the second straight year.

Colonial Atheletic AssociationRyan Overdevest was the lone William & Mary player to garner Academic All-America honors with a flawless grade point average, while majoring in business at the College. Overdevest became the third Tribe player to be a two-time Academic All-American.

This season, Overdevest helped the Tribe to a 9-9-3 overall mark, a 6-4-1 ledger in the CAA and the berth in the league tournament for the first time since 2004. He started 17 matches, while playing in all 21 for the College. Overdevest finished his senior campaign with three points on a goal and an assist. He headed in the game-winner in the Tribe’s 1-0 victory over Delaware, while providing the assist on the Tribe’s game-winning tally against VCU. For his career, Overdevest has played in 61 matches, earning 25 starts.
Knicknamed by his Seals teammates as “the Academic,” the senior co-captain has been a standout in the classroom as well as on the pitch. During the last three seasons, Overdevest has won the W&M Alumni Award for the highest GPA on the Tribe men’s soccer team. Last spring, he was named the W&M Robert M. Usry Award winner. The award is given annually to a varsity athlete who has earned at least one varsity letter, has the highest GPA of any athlete at the end of his/her junior year and has completed 75 per-cent of his/her degree requirements for graduation.

Anton (Alex) Peterlin received Big West All-Conference honorable mention. As a starting mid-fielder for the Mustangs in every game, Peterlin recorded one assist. Peterlin managed to place four of his nine shots this season on goal for a .444 shots on goal percentage.

USF
- San Francisco senior defender Chris Rodd earned West Coast Conference First Team recognition, and Defender Victor Cortez was also named to the WCC All-Freshman Team.

After transferring from William and Mary prior to his junior season, Rodd started all 38 matches on the 2006 and 2007 schedules. During his time with the Dons, he proved time and again why he is considered one of the best defenders in the western states. Rodd earned All-WCC Second Team honors last year after helping USF record a stingy 0.88 goals against average. In 2007, Rodd scored one goal, a game winner, in USF's 2-1 overtime victory over Stanford on September 16.

Also, for the second straight year, Rodd received the Joe Allen Team MVP Award.

Cortez jumped right into NCAA Division I soccer playing in all 18 matches for USF.  Cortez, a speedy and skilled player, gave the Dons a presence at the middle and left back to go along with Rodd.

Cortez was also presented the Stephen Negoesco award as the team's most outstanding underclassman.

City College of San Francisco - Stephen Cordova lead the Coast Conference in scoring with 19 goals and 5 assists, and placed 4th in state.  His play led the Rams into the playoffs where they were defeated in a narrow 1-2 loss to Hartnell.

Defender, Chris Brown, who played very sparingly for the Seals this season, competes this Friday December 14th at 7 pm, for Univ of Massachusetts as they take on Ohio State in the NCAA D-I semi-final match.  This is their first appearance in the Final Four.

Brown has started and played in all 25 games this season amassing 2119 minutes played (85 minutes per game average), and has had 2 goals and 2 assists this season. Five of his 11 shots were on goal.
