The fact that over 2,000 Toronto FC fans made the long journey to Columbus for last week’s opening MLS match could prove to be very significant. Not only was it a first for MLS, but it also represents a sea of change for the way that North Americans fans generally conduct themselves. These fans have tended to be far more passive than their peers in Europe, and a lot of atmosphere has been prompted by cheerleaders, exploding scoreboards, mascots, and the like. By contrast, last Saturday both sets of fans created the atmosphere. North American sports have relied on gimmicks to entertain fans, but what occurred in Columbus demonstrated that the best atmosphere comes from the supporters themselves. Standing and chanting is much more entertaining than sitting and applauding.
